Chapter 8 : The Asterion Accords
One evening after dinner, when they were all in front of the television broadcasting the news, a special flash surprised them, along with the rest of the country. The footage showed South Korean President, Park Geun-hye, with a North Korean government official named Kim Chin-Hae.
Jin thought he was fainting and Taehyung, who had clung to him to settle more comfortably like a cat, felt him stir without understanding why.
"Hey, what's wrong with you hyung?"
"N-nothing," Jin lied, "I just find this sight disturbing."
"It's an unusual sight indeed," Namjoon remarked, turning up the volume on the television using the remote control.
"I hope that doesn't bode badly..." Hoseok added.
"Please hope hard for all of us, Hobi hyung," Jimin begged.
Everyone was afraid of suddenly hearing the declaration of war from the two countries. A declaration of war meant a radical change of life for the country and especially for the artists. Because in a country at war, there was unfortunately no room for entertainment and art. The boys should then join the army like everyone else and end their barely realized dream.
Behind his desk, to the right of the North Korean statesman, Park Geun-hye spoke gravely:
"My dear fellow citizens,
today's date will be a historic day for years to come, as it marks a turning point in our relations with North Korea. As you know, for several months, missile fire from our neighbors has not ceased to worry us and put our forces in a permanent crisis situation, explaining that they carry out simple training maneuvers. To preserve the peace, we did not retaliate, thinking that the situation would be resolved peacefully, and my government has continued to maintain dialogue between our two nations."
She paused, as the country hung on her lips, careful not to look at the unreadable North Korean next to her. Jin swallowed his saliva with difficulty when he saw her speak again, wondering if his future would be decided in the words she was about to speak, not daring to take his eyes off her for even a single second, as he felt that Taehyung had his own still pointed at him due to his suspicious anxious behavior :
"A few weeks ago, however, serious tensions were rekindled on the border and it is impossible for us to pose as a victim nation this time because it turns out that the perpetrators are both North Korean soldiers and South Korean soldiers. This situation could have plunged our two countries into an even more terrible war than the one we had known in the past. I wanted to avoid this at all costs and was ready to compromise. Just like you, dear fellow citizens, I am sure of it."
"What sorts of compromises?" Namjoon asked, more to himself than to the others.
The two nations were not used to compromise. If there was a threat, it had to be push it aside or crush it as soon as possible. But why did South Koreans go to clash with North Koreans knowing the consequences it would have?
"To think that there are idiots like that in our country," Yoongi commented, sniffling, as Jin tried to make himself as small as possible sinking deep into the sofa, knowing he was one of those idiot so despised by his member, but also probably by the entire country at the same time.
"For that reason," the South Korean President continued, "we were engaged in very long talks with our North Korean counterpart. And we accepted one of their proposals which seemed right to us because it followed the logic of the lesser bad. I will give the floor to Mr. Kim Chin-Hae, sent by Mr. Kim Jong-Un, to present the Asterion Accords signed by our two nations, in collaboration with our respective advisers."
The short but imposing man cleared his throat before speaking from behind his desk:
"Our supreme leader intended to be generous when he offered these agreements to South Korea and we are happy to see that you have accepted," the North Korean man began in a tone as cold as the South Korean president. Neither seemed to hide with great effort the animosity that bound their two nations. "After all, in the event of an armed conflict, you would be at a profound disadvantage and you know it."
He was probably referring to the nuclear arsenal and the biological weapons developed in recent years by his country but he put aside the fact that the armament of South Korea was much more modern and efficient than theirs.
In their living room, the seven members of BTS were relieved to realize that their country had escaped the nightmare of a terrible war.
However, the last words of Mr. Kim was something not to say when you were in an enemy country. The animosity of the whole South Korea then focused on this man who shamelessly claimed that South Korea was weaker than North Korea and people began to imagine the soldiers who had threatened the North Koreans as heroes who did not allow themselves to bow down North Korean provocations.
"The Asterion Accords that have been signed will make it possible to escape this war while proving the superiority of one or the other of our two nations," Kim Chin-Hae resumed, who seemed convinced that his nation was uncompromising the one who would prove its superiority.
"A group of seven young South Koreans and a group of seven young North Koreans – among whom will be some soldiers involved in the attack on the DMZ a few weeks ago – will be drawn at random to participate in a survival game in the demilitarized zone.
In the same way that the Olympic Games make it possible to prove the superiority of nations through sport, it will be a question of proving tactical and military superiority by managing to cross the demilitarized zone, from North to South for the South Koreans and from South to North for North Koreans.
The goal is therefore simple: you have to leave the DMZ and manage to return home. The first individual to achieve this, even without the rest of his group, will makes his country win. It's that simple."
The situation made a whole country sigh with relief.
"Since they are military, they will know how to avoid mines and fight if necessary so the game will be fair," Jungkook commented.
"It may even be interesting to follow," Hoseok added excitedly. "I wonder if it will be televised."
"Do you think they would install cameras in the DMZ?" Jimin asked, just as excited at the idea.
"Why not?"
"That would be insane!"
"We would have to mix the cameras of the two countries and as we are in a zone of tension, in the event of deterioration of the material of one country, it could cause new tensions. I don't know if they will," Namjoon explained.
"Couldn't we use drones temporarily in this case?" Taehyung objected.
"No idea," Namjoon admitted, focusing back on the TV screen where the South Korean president had spoken again to elaborate:
"The victors of a nation will be pardoned by both nations: their own country whose security they had endangered, but also the nation they had attacked. If South Korea wins, North Korea agrees to halt its nuclear weapons program for nine years."
"Why nine years in particular?" Taehyung asked, puzzled.
"Who knows what's going on in their head," Jimin replied.
"However, if the group of seven South Korean men who will enter the DMZ loses, the three South Koreans responsible for the tensions will be delivered to North Korea and the country will have to indulge each year in this sacrifice of seven young men or women among the child of the nation for this game. If we refuse, total war awaits us.
This proposed alternative is one of the strangest, certainly, but saving because it would make it possible to avoid a carnage and to establish a peace agreement lasting nine years in the certainty that we will obviously win. We are even considering the possibility of reiterating this agreement in nine years if it turns out to be favorable to us."
"She hopes to be the president who will have made it possible to find a lasting agreement with North Korea," Namjoon commented, sickened by Park Geun-hye's decision to sacrifice the young people of her country. "But if that doesn't work, she will become the most hated person in Korea for bowing the knee to North Korea but not getting them out of the conflict, for resting peace on a game proposed by our enemy, for the sadistic pleasure of a dictator and above all, for having sacrificed the children of her nation."
"Yeah, but right now she's doing fine because the most hated people in Korea are probably the soldiers who provoked North Korea," Yoongi shrugged. "In any case, she had better not be mistaken, and not only for her reputation but above all for the country."
"Jin hyung, what is it?" Jungkook suddenly asked, as he had just realized that Jin was pale as death, his gaze glued to the TV screen
Jin turned slowly towards the maknae and everyone could read the fear in his eyes.
"Hyung...?" Taehyung began.
"Oh my God, look!!" Jimin cried, pointing to the TV screen where three faces were displayed while Park Geun-hye's voice still echoed above.
"The three South Korean citizens responsible for these tensions are idols who were doing their military service. They are:
Seo Eun-kwang from the group BtoB,
Son Hyunwoo from the group Monsta X ,
And finally, Kim Seokjin from the group BTS.
It has been decided that one of their group of seven will be publicly chosen tomorrow to participate in this military survival game which we will call the Asterion Games. One of these three groups will therefore leave in two days for North Korea while a group of North Koreans will be received in South Korea to enter the DMZ from the South. The companies of these three groups have already been notified of the organization of the event to be held tomorrow. We are of course counting on their full cooperation."
The last words sounded very much like a threat. She added a few more concluding words that the seven boys in the BTS dorm did not listen to, because they were dumbfounded with horror, then greeted the South Korean people before disappearing from the screen where a journalist resumed speaking.
Yoongi turned off the TV and everyone turned to Jin.
The puzzle pieces fit together in the minds of the BTS members. Jin had been dismissed from the army several weeks before. He was then stationed at the DMZ from where he had returned injured and had been kept in secrecy, prohibited from revealing the details of what had really happened.
It all meant one thing: DMZ troublemakers, South Korea's most famous idiots from that night were Jin, Shownu, and Eunkwang. And that meant that it was BTS, Monsta X or BtoB who were going to pay a high price to preserve the peace of the nation. They were the potential sacrificial victims of the Asterion Accords.
They weren't military people, just idols who had the audacity to think they could watch Asterion's games on TV.
And just like that, Jin's efforts to win back the hearts and respect of his dongsaeng and fans over the past few weeks were brushed aside.
Deep down, facing the flabbergasted gaze of his members, Jin then regretted not having died the day of the attack.
