Chapter 35: You're just a dog
More than two months had passed since Eunma's classes started when Jungkook became aware that Taehyung was slipping away every night.
The first time, he woke up by chance in the middle of the night and saw his cousin's empty bed. Thinking he was just in the bathroom, he waited for him to come back but he never came back and in the early morning when he woke up again, he saw that Taehyung had come to change and take his school bag.
The next night, Jungkook pretended to fall asleep but kept one eye open to watch Taehyung and saw him leave the room.
Like other students, Jungkook had for some time heard rumors, that things happened at night in Building D. Students said that there were secret gatherings that brought together selected students, the Chosen Ones, in a room located on the top floor and which they nicknamed the chamber of secrets because no one except a few students could go there. There, it was said that they practiced all kinds of illegal games with complete impunity, despite the surveillance of the Rat and his team of supervisors.
Jealous that Taehyung could belong to such a secret society and not him, Jungkook had decided to follow his cousin to uncover the truth and also be accepted into this closed circle. But he felt ridiculous when he found out that Taehyung had actually only gone to see Seokjin in the room he shared with Yoongi. So he returned to his room, frustrated at having thought he had discovered an interesting secret.
However, his disappointment was short-lived as he realized that Taehyung had not returned. For several nights, he had monitored his nocturnal outings and had to face the facts: Taehyung spent every night in Yoongi and Seokjin's room.
He remembered the mission his father had given him: to find out if Seokjin and Taehyung shared a bond more intimate than that of simple friends. And learning that they slept together in the same room, probably the same bed since Yoongi occupied the second bed, seemed to confirm what his father thought.
Now he had to verify it with his own eyes and bring proof to his father. There was only one problem: he was going to have to enter the room and surprise them and he didn't know how to do it yet. Then he realized he was going to need help.
One evening in the canteen, he noticed Yoongi who was eating alone, as usual and sat down opposite him without asking his permission. Yoongi raised a look at him that would have scared away most of the students. But not Jungkook, because he had an important task to accomplish and for that, he needed Yoongi.
"Hey, Yoongi, I have something to ask you."
"Move!" Yoongi told him, who didn't like the Jeons any more than their cousins the Kims.
"Charming," Jungkook commented without leaving, "You are as nice as you look."
Yoongi gave him a threatening look, indicating that he wasn't going to play with him.
"Anyway," Jungkook continued, "As I said, I have something to ask you. But first, we need to be on the same page, you and I. I imagine you didn't notice that every night your room welcomed an unwanted tenant, am I right?"
Yoongi didn't answer but Jungkook saw that he had managed to get his attention.
"Well, luckily for you, I noticed that my roommate got out of bed every night to go to his room. I know Taehyung has your room code and that he's going to spend every night there with Jin."
"What do you want?" Yoongi asked in a neutral voice. He wondered what motivated Jungkook to come and tell him that. "You didn't just come to tell me that your roommate didn't want to sleep with you, everyone knows that you hate each other. So what do you want?"
Like almost everyone, Jungkook didn't like Yoongi. He said little, but when he spoke, he was even more unpleasant than when he was silent and he always managed to disturb his interlocutors enough to make them abandon the discussion. However, Jungkook kept his cool despite the wall he faced.
"I know that the presence of my cousin in your room displeases you and that you are not going to agree to let him back now that you know. In exchange for this information, I just want you to let me in tonight and let me take a picture of them sleeping together. Or you take the photo yourself, that suits me too. Then I will take care of going to see the Rat to denounce them. I just want to surprise them both first."
Yoongi considered him for a moment before responding, and Jungkook felt judged by this powerful gaze like no gaze had ever judged him. But he didn't care if he was misjudged and he knew that Yoongi never took anyone's side. So, he was sure that he would not take his cousin's side and that he would not care what could happen to him.
"Why? Do you really want Taehyung to sleep with you instead of Seokjin? You feel alone at night without him, that's it?" Yoongi quipped to his own surprise.
It wasn't his habit to be ironic like that, but he couldn't help it. He knew that Jungkook wanted to hurt Taehyung and obviously, he wanted to use him for that. He didn't care about Taehyung personally but what he took away from Jungkook's plan was that he was going to go after Taehyung no matter the means, even if it meant crushing Seokjin in the process. And obviously, Seokjin didn't risk the same thing as Taehyung in this matter, considering the fact that he was not Mr. Kim's son but almost entirely dependent on him.
"Not at all," Jungkook asserted, having perceived Yoongi's irony, "I don't care where Taehyung sleeps, I even wish it wasn't with me. I just want to be able to destroy him once and for all. You can keep him after that if you want but I know you don't like the Kims any more than I do."
"I'm not their cousin," Yoongi replied, as if that morally took away Jungkook's right to hate them and wish them harm.
"What does it matter to you that I'm their cousin? My connection with them ends there," Jungkook growled. "Taehyung and Namjoon's family have ridiculed mine enough as it is. It's my turn to strike and destroy their reputation."
"But since you're afraid of Namjoon, you decided to go after the weak link of the family, that is to say the stupid little brother," Yoongi understood."
"I'm not afraid of Namjoon, I'm just smart enough to do the right choice. And my choice fell on Taehyung, I will destroy him in no time."
"By proving that he's gay? Is this your smart plan? What makes you think he is?"
"Are you really asking the question? He's not just always with Jin during the day and jealous to see him friendly with other guys, he's also sleeping with him, that should be a clue," Jungkook exposed. "But I grant you that I am absolutely not sure myself. Actually, I don't care if that's really the case, I just have to make it seem like it is and share the proof. "
"That's slander," Yoongi pointed out to him.
"No doubt," Jungkook admitted without the slightest apparent guilt, "but if that's what it takes for my dad to beat Taehyung's, I'll do what it takes. It's about my future and that's what matters most to me."
"So you're just a dog that obeys its master," Yoongi noticed, before specifying: "I don't like dogs, I like cats. They are free and act according to their own will."
"What are you talking about?" Jungkook replied, before asking, angry: "did you just call me a dog?!"
"Yes, I did," Yoongi said. "Your pathetic actions remind me of that. You make decisions based on what your father wants, it's pathetic."
"Pathetic? I told you that I'm doing it for my reputation, I don't care about what my father wants, I'm preparing for my future, not his!" Jungkook exclaimed, his eyes flashing with anger. He hated his father and refused to let Yoongi make him his father's pet.
"Still, you're still a dog in my eyes," Yoongi retorted sensing Jungkook's anger and hatred towards his father. Yet, the Jeon's son didn't seem to understand the extent to which he was allowing himself to be manipulated by his father. "Are you talking about your future? This is the future your parents planned for you, you didn't choose anything at all, and you do exactly what they expect of you, like a nice puppy. You claim to do things for yourself but you only hate your cousins because your parents hated theirs and told you to do the same, there was never any other reason. They trained you to bite them and that's what you do. I don't like dogs," Yoongi repeated to a furious Jungkook.
"Do you think my cousins are any better than me?!" He asked in a voice vibrating with anger.
"Namjoon is a dog too, he's exactly like you, he just occupies a position higher than you in the social hierarchy which for the moment exempts him from attacking you. But Taehyung isn't. He used to be a tiger, a wild beast who only devoured others following his own desires, without considering his reputation unlike you or his brother. He was free but he did evil and in that he was contemptible just like you. Yet, that savage beast let himself be petted by someone yet insignificant in front of him who meant him no harm and who put up with his scratches and his wildness for a long time before he could make him more sociable. Thanks to that and because he didn't want to hurt this person anymore, Taehyung has stopped devouring and clawing now, he's just a wild cat. He changed and in that, he is better than you."
"What?!" exclaimed Junkook who couldn't believe it.
"Exactly what I said. Taehyung may be stupid, but his malice has faded while yours is stronger than ever. Of the two of you, you're the despicable guy, no matter how much of a perfect boy you give yourself. Now go away, I won't help you with your twisted machinations."
"So you're going to let Taehyung do whatever he wants?" Jungkook growled as a last attempt. "Did you perhaps become his friend?"
"No, I didn't say that, I'm no one's friend. I'm just saying that I will never associate myself with you."
In anger, Jungkook stood up. Before leaving, however, he thought about one thing. If it wasn't for Taehyung that Yoongi declined his request, it was obviously for someone else.
"You know Yoongi," he said, "you make yourself look like a savage guy, insensitive to everything around him and who is no one's friend, but I have the impression that you haven't noticed something about yourself yet: you say that Taehyung is the tiger who let himself be petted by someone's caring hand despite his wrongs, right? Yet, aren't you, the wild cat who allowed himself to be tamed and changed by Jin into a kitten looking for his affection?"
Jungkook quickly saw that he had been right on target. Yoongi wasn't used to showing his emotions and yet his eyes widened when he heard what Jungkook had just said. Could Jungkook be right? he asked himself. Had he let himself be softened by Seokjin's sincere heart and kindness?
But he recovered quickly. No, his heart was hermetically sealed, no one could soften it, Seokjin no more than anyone else. He had to remain solidly unresponsive as a stone, this was the person he had chosen to be. And he wouldn't let Seokjin change that.
The next morning like every morning, Seokjin woke up to Taehyung's discreet alarm clock who, reluctantly, broke away from Seokjin to turn it off. It took him a few seconds to emerge from sleep and sit up in bed, his eyes still glued and his hair disheveled. He never wanted to leave the warmth of the bed but he knew he had no choice.
He finally climbed over Seokjin who was lying towards the edge of the bed and put on his slippers before sleepwalking towards the door.
"See you later," Seokjin whispered to him before he went out. His hair was even messier than Taehyung's and he had his eyes closed, fighting not to go back to sleep.
Taehyung muttered an indistinct response before quietly closing the door.
Seokjin eventually got up and went to wash his face and get dressed in the bathroom where he could turn on the light without waking Yoongi. Coming out, he began to make his bed in the dark when suddenly the light came on in the room, startling him.
He turned around and saw that Yoongi had turned on his nightstand and was sitting on the edge of his bed with his arms crossed. He was fully awake.
"Y-Yoongi, you're awake early today," Seokjin stuttered.
"No earlier than usual," Yoongi replied, "I'm always awake at this time, you just didn't notice."
"B-but I don't understand, you said you always wake up at six thirty!"Seokjin exclaimed, making sure it was six o'clock and not six thirty.
"That was true before," Yoongi replied, "when I didn't have a roommate who woke up before the sun to sneak his bedmate out."
Hearing that, Seokjin's heart seemed to drop in his chest.
