Chapter Thirty-Two: Fitz

I must be still falling down the tunnel of saridian, since I'm still unable to open my eyes. After "waking up", I'm immediately aware of the wind blowing mercilessly in my face. Shivers running up my spine at the coldness of the wind, I decide to try to transmit to Donovan.

Unfortunately, he doesn't reply.

Fortunately, I now know that he's awake because he screams loudly. Very, loudly. Sighing loudly, I transmit to him again, Don't panic. I'm transmitting to you so there won't be a possibility of people listening in on our conversation.

Is this how Sophie feels when you transit to her? Donovan asks, making me wish that he can see the eye roll I want to do so badly. Man, this is creepy as heck! Wait- maybe I also have mind powers! I'm going to try!

I hear Donovan grunting with determination to inherit the telepathic abilities that Sophie and I have. Wishing that I could glare at the male Sovereign disapprovingly, I'm forced to listen to Donovan's pointless attempts. "Are you done yet?" I growl sarcastically. You're wasting time, I transmit to him, hoping that my annoyance is evident in the transmission.

Dang it- I was actually trying, Donovan thinks in disappointment, making me suppress my laughter. But anyways, what's up?

Well, for starters, we're still falling down a hole, I transmit, bitterness flowing through my veins. And I can't see anything even if I wanted to. The nerves to open my eyes are numb right now.

Whoa, same thing for me too, Donovan agrees nonchalantly, making me wish that I could roll my eyes right at this moment.

Suddenly, I get an idea. I'm going to try and track anyone's thoughts, I tell him. Then I might find out something.

What will you find out?

I don't know, I admit. But hopefully, I find something out. Pulling my consciousness away from the male Sovereign's, I begin to slowly track thoughts. First, I hear Donovan's thoughts, which are basically commenting on "how cool mind powers are". Sighing, I wait more in silence and expand how far I'm tracking thoughts. I can't even tell how much time has passed since we've been falling down here.

And then I finally hear it- someone else's thoughts. I force myself to stay silent as more and more different thoughts enter my mind. Before I know it, the murmur of thoughts become incredibly loud, like overlapping sirens playing just in my head. Groaning softly, I shut my eyes tighter than they already are as an attempt to calm the voices down to no avail. I take in a deep breath, preparing myself to deal with all of these voice. As agonizingly long seconds pass, I keep reminding myself that if I shut these thoughts out, I won't be able to find some sort of clue to getting the both of us out of here.

Because of that, I decide to try and sort through the loudest thoughts until I reach the quietest thoughts. The loudest thoughts are counting down from twenty; it doesn't seem like they're counting down for a good reason. Sighing when the countdown is the only thing that the people that I've tracked are thinking, I move onto the fainter voices.

The second wave of thoughts I tracked were all scattered. The one that was the most prominent was the thought about "how boring guarding an empty hallway is". I mentally note that while we're escaping, we'll surely run into some guards. I remind myself that I need to be prepared for anything.

I'm about to check the third wave of thought I'd tracked when Donovan exclaims, "Fitz! I can see you! I can see me!"

Frowning, I open my eyes to look at Donovan. My eyes widen when my mind finally makes the connection that I'm not staring at blackness anymore- I can move my eyelids again. Smiling softly, I wiggle my arms around slightly as we free fall down the tunnel. This must just be a tunnel without saridian, I think to myself. Sure enough, when I look up, I see a faint outline of thousands of dark red-violet crystals on the walls.

"Is this bad?" Donovan suddenly asks, stopping my train of thought. I glance up to see Donovan occasionally crashing into the inner tunnel wall behind him before returning to his original position. Grunting when he slams into the wall harder than last time, he says, "This is happening because of one of those crystals, right?"

Before I can shake my head, I find an invisible force causing me to collide with the same wall as Donovan. Pain beginning to blossom in varying areas of my body, I furrow my eyebrows when I return to my original position as well. "This isn't a crystal," I say confidently.

"Then what is it?" he asks. "A person?"

Instead of answering the male Sovereign, I begin to track people's thoughts again. And once again, I'm interrupted.

But this time, I'm interrupted with Donovan's scream. My eyes widen considerably as Donovan collides with the wall. Instead of returning to his original position, he crashes through the wall and onto a stone floor, light gleaming through the newly created hole.

I use my telekinesis to stop myself from free-falling any more. Without hesitation, I look at the hole in which Donovan broke through seconds before.

And then at full force, I push myself to break through the wall and onto the same stone floor. I can feel some blood trailing down my shoulder, but I ignore it and shake the debris off of my shoulders. Craning my neck side to side, I straighten my posture up, dealing with the pain again.

I then look down to see Donovan struggling to stay awake. I quickly bend down to help him stand upright. Donovan, I transmit into his mind as he's still on the brink of unconsciousness. Can you hear me?

Yeah... Donovan thinks faintly. God, that hurt like heck. He then wearily looks at my own blood. Did you seriously crash through a wall at your free will? Because I didn't choose to feel this pain.

I roll my eyes. Ignoring the stinging pain of my injury, I sigh in relief when I see that Donovan has bruises and many, many scratches, but no bleeding wounds of any kind. Although the pain and the back of my mind screams for me to not do this, I use my telekinesis to lift him up a few inches off of the ground.

Donovan's eyes suddenly widen and he begins to flail around. Dude! Put me down! Donovan thinks. I can walk on my own.

Stopping in my tracks, I turn around and face the Sovereign. Are you sure? I ask, raising an eyebrow. When Donovan merely stares down at me, I slowly place him down. Then I say out loud, "If you can walk, then you'll have to run to keep up. We need to get out of here."

"But-" Donovan stops speaking when he sees me running forward. I use some of my telekinesis to lift me a few centimeters off of the ground so my footsteps won't be heard, but I'll be running still. After muttering some curses under his breath, Donovan runs after me, most likely not noticing how I'm also lifting him up the slightest so he'll move silently.

While I keep a moderate pace, Donovan abruptly rushes past me. As the male Sovereign turns the corner, I increase my pace so it's just like his. Quickly turning the corner, I dash down the hallway. To my horror, I see the male Sovereign fiddling with a walkie talkie that he must've stolen from the unsuspecting guard in front of him. When I near the two of them, I use my telekinesis to lift the two of us to lay flat against the ceiling above the guard.

After glaring at the busy Sovereign, I read the thoughts of the guard. Sighing faintly when they're just

about staying diligent at his job, mixed in with complaints of boredom, I glare daggers at Donovan. "Why the heck did you do that?" I hiss quietly after I use my ability to make the two of us drift down a new hallway. "And what plan do you have with a walkie talkie? Eavesdrop on what people say into the walkie talkies?"

"Well- yes," Donovan begins. After finishing whatever he's doing, the male Sovereign turns to face me. "But I've also made it so it's like a GPS. Since all walkie talkies are connected, I've made it so it actually pinpoints where each walkie talkie is."

"That's impressive," I say, my eyes wide. "Good job, Donovan."

"Guess being a computer nerd when I was little helped me more with my techno-powers," Donovan remarks. When he sees me smirking, the male Sovereign threatens, "Don't you ever tell anyone else that. Or I'll prank you like never before."

Rolling my eyes, I make the two of drift down to the ground before a corner. Suddenly, Donovan curses and smacks the walkie talkie/GPS gadget. Seeing that he looks ready to break the gadget, I raise an eyebrow and ask, "What's wrong, Donovan?"

"The screen's glitching," Donovan says, followed by a mouthful of words that would've earned him detention at any school. "I can't read it. At all."

Hearing those words, I pale considerably. Dread pooling into my stomach like a flood, I reach for the gadget and take it from the male Sovereign. I glance down and read, "Your cover has been blown ever since I pulled him out". Almost on cue, the screen glitches again and new words appear in the same runes as the locket and wall. "Finally, someone who can read it," I translate under my breath. I then realize that the "pulled him out" part is towards Donovan. He doesn't have telepathic abilities like I do, so he couldn't have broken through himself, I note. So that means someone who also has these abilities took him out. Immediately, my mind thinks of Fitton.

The screen flashes some new runes, "You may be smart, but I'm smarter." Scowling, I then whisper the single letters that appear on the screen, "F... I... T... T... O... N..." When the screen returns to normal, I throw the gadget into the wall, breaking it into many, many pieces of metal as a safety precaution.

"What'd you do that for?!" Donovan exclaims, looking down at the parts of now scrap parts.

"He already knows that we're here," I explain quickly. "Fitton's most likely here with us."

I then glance down at the somehow working screen. This time, it shows a ring of yellow dots in a hallway, another yellow dot in the middle of the ring.

And when I glance up, I see a ring of guards surrounding the two of us.

Of course, Donovan curses madly at this.
