Chapter Thirty-One: Sophie
I wake up, once again, in the nighttime. This time, after glancing over at my alarm clock, I slept more than last time, but still woke up too early. Sighing, I turn on the room lights and stare absentmindedly at the ground in front of me. Still bothered by the saridian in Donovan's drawer, I can't help but give him some credit for giving a message to Audrey.
My shoulder weighing more than they did moments before, I walk over to my desk and pull open the first drawer to find the folder of Arien laying neatly within it. The second drawer has the folders of Michelle and David Grahams. I freeze up as my mind replays through Jacob's view of murdering his only family members. And now he has no one, I think bitterly as I close the drawer rather loudly.
My face and arms begin to sting with phantom pain from all of the swollen wounds that Jacob had inflicted on me. Rubbing my arms self-consciously, I walk to the bathroom to take a shower and clear my thoughts. Letting the freezing cold water make my skin bristle with goosebumps, I let out a breath that I didn't know I was holding. After washing myself, I turn the water off and step out of the shower, shivering slightly.
After changing, I decide that I'm not going to go back to sleep. Instead, I walk over to my desk and pull open the third drawer. My eyes then widen when I see a prostrator lying there, untouched. Gingerly taking the prostrator out of my drawer and turn it slowly in my hand. "Is this Fitz's..?" I ask myself. I look in the drawer again and see a row of tzanion ammunition for the prostrator.
Furrowing my eyebrows at this, I leave the prostrator on my desk and go into Fitz's room. Using the light that's shining from my room, I turn on Fitz's lights as well. Even though I know that Fitz isn't in his room, or anywhere else that I can think of, my heart just sinks more at how empty the room is.
Nearing his desk, I quickly open each drawer to see that Fitz's prostrator is indeed not in any of his drawers. Frowning more, I pick up the prostrator again when I re-enter my room. "Surely you forgot this in my room," I mumble to myself, trying to wrap my head around the fact that Fitz left to God knows where, and he didn't bring his weapon along with him.
Mentally cursing Fitz's sudden stupidity, I sit down on my bed, silently glaring at the weapon. "Why would he leave this?" I ask. I frown, trying to remember when Fitz ever came to my room with his prostrator. When I realize that he never did, I curse him more and look over the prostrator again. I see my solemn reflection staring back at me with a hollow gaze.
Sighing, I stare down at the ground instead. Maybe he forgot it, I think to myself. But then it'd be in his room, not mine. Groaning in irritation, I stand up abruptly. Is it really that hard to accept that he left the prostrator purposely for you? I purse my lips together for a moment before thinking, Yes, yes it is. Since he possibly endangered himself by leaving this for me to find. Exhaling loudly, I narrow my eyes at the prostrator. My worry for Fitz is surely going to be the death of me.
Knocking suddenly rips me away from my thoughts. Jumping up in surprise, I rush over and hide the prostrator in the third drawer without thinking. Practically slamming the drawer closed, I brush myself off, my racing heart still beating loudly as I make my way to the door. I raise an eyebrow when I'm met with Audrey. "It's past midnight," I comment.
"Yet you're all ready for the day," Audrey retorts before entering my room. Shaking my head slightly at her sudden intrusion, I close the door and walk after the female Sovereign. Audrey sits on my bed while I sit at my desk, turning the chair so it'll face her.
"Couldn't sleep?" both of us ask as we stare at each other's tired faces. Suddenly, the bags underneath my eyes feel heavier as I'm more aware of them. Sighing in defeat, I shake my head. "I just can't sleep while they're gone..." I find myself whispering.
Audrey nods solemnly. "To be honest, Donovan's message has been haunting me ever since we saw it," she admits softly, surprising me with the sincerity and gentleness. "But the type of 'crystal' he used was messed up," the female Sovereign adds, making me chuckle faintly.
"I doubt he knew," I say. Eyeing the drawer with the prostrator, I look at Audrey again. "Actually, Audrey- I found something in my desk."
Audrey's eyes widen. Walking over to me and the desk, she asks, "Is it a letter?"
I shake my head. "Do you know what a prostrator is?"
"Kind of..." Audrey says, rolling her eyes at my shock. "Donovan told me that it was a weapon that's mentally painful as heck. Fitz has one, doesn't he?" she asks at the end.
"He does," I confirm. "Fitz got it while he was saving me at the warehouse last year. And he..."
"He what?" Audrey asks rather impatiently, making me roll my eyes.
"Fitz left it here for me," I say quickly. "And that means that he doesn't have it with him, so he basically put himself in danger because of this."
Audrey scoffs, "Only you would manage to turn a romantic gift into something to worry about." After seeing the grim expression I have, the female Sovereign adds, "Maybe he left it here by accident..?"
I shake my head. "He never came into my room with his prostrator," I point out. "And if he even did come into my room with it, it wouldn't be tucked in neatly into one of the drawers of my desk. Fitz did this on purpose, Audrey." I sigh, my worry flooding back to me.
The female Sovereign nods. "Was there anything else that you found?" she asks after a moment of silence between us.
"No," I say, shaking my head. "Just the prostrator. What about you?"
Audrey shrugs. "Unless I missed something, which I probably did," she begins. "The message from Donovan was the only thing that was intentionally left for me to find..." The female Sovereign shakes her head. "That one words has been repeating in my mind ever since we found it. It's terrifying."
I look at the female Sovereign sympathetically. I open my mouth to say something when I hear more knocking at the door. Both of us jump up at how loud the knocking is. Shaking my head, I walk over and open the door, Audrey following me.
The female Sovereign and I gasp when we find ourselves staring at Laurel. Her cheeks are stained with what I can assume to be tears of sadness by how emotional her gaze is, but she wears the biggest smile I've ever seen.
"What happened?" Audrey and I both ask at the same time.
"It's Benen," Laurel manages to say before she suddenly sobs.
"Is he hurt?" I ask.
Laurel shakes her head. "No, he's fine," she assures us. Her smile suddenly falters. "But when I asked Benen about Fitz and Donovan, he..." She pauses, looking at the two of us. "He didn't even know that they're gone. He thought that they were still here."
My eyes widen. "But they're not..." I mumble to myself. "So there's another problem."
Audrey raises her eyebrows. "And what would that be?"
"If you're asking about where he was," Laurel begins, facing me. "I don't know."
"Why is that?" Audrey asks somewhat bitterly.
Laurel shrugs, obviously not missing the snap in Audrey's tone. "He also doesn't remember that either. According to him, he was in his room the entire time. It's like he has... He has..." She pauses again, thinking of the word.
Sighing, I ask, "Do you mean amnesia?"
Laurel nods, "Exactly!"
