Chapter One: Sophie

"What are you doing?"

Both Sovereigns jump in, a grey pail slipping from Audrey's hands. It crashes with a loud BANG, white powder covering the tiles. Fitz and I quickly step aside, eyeing the substance suspiciously. Audrey's eyes widen as she tips the bucket upright before all the powder spills out. I notice how she deliberately avoid contact with the unknown powder.

Donovan sighs in defeat, rolling his eyes at Audrey and receiving a glare in return. "You wouldn't believe us if we said 'nothing', huh?"

We shake our heads. They should know better than that.

He groans. "We're not doing anything bad," he begins. I raise an eyebrow, biting back a sarcastic remark. "Seriously- all we were going to do is.." Donovan mumbles the rest so we can't hear it.

Fitz rolls his eyes. "What was that last part?" he asks, glowering at the male Sovereign.

"...Throw itch powder at the Wallace guy," he finally mutters.

I shake my head. "Uh- no," I state in a stern voice. "You two are not doing that."

"Yeah, where did you even get that?" Fitz asks. My eyes widen when I realize that I've never seen Mr. Wallace have any type of itch powder in storage.

"We found it in a closet," Audrey answers, looking at the spilt powder.

Donovan shakes his head. "That's not the point," he says, interrupting Audrey from saying anything more. He signals for her to place the pail down. "Well- if we can't do that, what do we do now?" He heavily emphasizes on the last word as if he's sighing. He then huffs as he crosses his arms in exasperation.

"First, cleaning this up," Fitz says, gesturing to the itch powder around them. He smirks when Donovan glares at him.

"And we'll go to Laurel or Benen's room to see if they know something we can do," I suggest, earning a nod of agreement from Fitz.

Audrey nods. Donovan nods as well as he picks the metal bucket up. He then drops the pail again, the sound startling me. The three of us look at the male Sovereign to see him curse abundantly.

"What?" Fitz asks, a hint of annoyance in his voice.

"I-" he pauses, cursing more. After his slew of foul words ends, Donovan mutters angrily, "I got itch powder on my feet..."

And Audrey laughs.

...

Of course, Laurel wanted to do makeovers. When everyone protested- thankfully- she pouts and suggests "Two Truths and One Lie". We all agree on that and begin to sit in a circle in Laurel's room.

Seeing Laurel's face, I ask, "Why don't you start, Laurel? You're the one who gave us the idea."

Laurel instantly brightens up at my suggestion. Clapping her hands together, she says, "I'm actually sixteen, I can drive..." She pauses, looking at each of us until she stops at Benen. Quickly looking away, she finally adds, "And I have a boyfriend."

Everyone's eyes widen at the last one. I tilt my head to the side. If she did, she wouldn't have admitted to me in a way that she liked him last year. Wait- did she still like him?

Before anyone else can answer, Benen narrows his eyes in concentration. Looking into Laurel's eyes, he says, "The boyfriend is a lie." When everyone turns to look at him, I notice a different kind of heat in his gaze as he stares at Laurel. Is it anger? No, jealousy?

Fitz interrupts my thoughts by asking, "How do you know that?" Fitz and I exchange a glance, and I realize that the male Percipient also caught the intensity in the male Altruistic's stare but didn't call it out.

Benen looks at Fitz before leaning back ever so casually. "Well, she took a long time think of the final one and-"

"It was only a few seconds!" Laurel quickly interjects. With a big harumph, she crosses her arms and puffs her cheeks out in mock annoyance.

"And," Benen adds. But instead of saying the second part to all of us, he whispers it in her ear. And whatever he said must've been personal or embarrassing since the female Altruistic covers her face to hide the deep blush we saw, but didn't call out.

Audrey's about to say something, but someone clears their throat, causing all of us to look. Laurel looks up, but covers her face with a hand to hide her blush.

After we all stand up, Audrey can't help but say, "Took you long enough."

Mr. Wallace chuckles. "Yes, it sure did, Audrey."
