Mr. Gabriel Reed Farley - June 20, 1882
My dearest Merritt,
I hope this letter finds you well. I have spoken to Lizzie and she is thrilled at the prospect of having you stay with us. You are practically family; you should never hesitate to seek shelter with us. We will always take you with open arms. I am interested to hear your opinion on this Dr. Abaddon. I have done some research and found that he is a little less than respectable. I do not wish to color your image of him, in fact, I believe you to be a good judge of character; but I feel led to mention that, according to a few reports, your doctor has been seen entering more than a few places of ill repute. Lizzie assured me that she would sleuth next time she has company and see what else she can deduce about this gentleman.
In the meantime, I will welcome you into our home. I only ask, at my wife's duress, that you see about having someone accompany you—perhaps a nurse. Lizzie is not concerned about your mental well-being. Rather, she worries you will be lonely since she is often occupied with matters of the home. If it would be easier, I can ask after your cousin Samantha, if memory serves me, the two of you were once close. She resides in London and might be willing to stay with you, at least until you are settled with us. Do let me know your thoughts. If all goes well, I will expect your arrival this Monday afternoon.
Affectionately,
