Chapter 10: With Great Power

Yukio woke up early that morning. He checked his phone, and got dressed to visit the shrine. He knew Kagura was waiting for him, so he rushed towards the shrine.

When Yukio arrived he was greeted by a girl with short pale green hair. Yukio remembered the girl from the last time he visited.

"I knew you were suspicious, so you know about Kagura?" Yukio asked.

The girl didn't respond, she glared at Yukio in a hostile manner.

I don't think she likes me.

"That's Naraku, she's my guardian." Kagura suddenly appeared behind Yukio, startling him.

"Whoa! Y-Your guardian? Like your parent or something?" Yukio asked.

"No, she certainly is not my mother. I don't have one, because I was born from a sphere, that's all you need to know about me." Kagura replied.

"I have more questions than answers now!" Yukio exclaimed.

Kagura dismissed the topic. "Anyway, before we do anything, I must ask something very important."

"Ok, what is it?" Yukio gave his attention to Kagura.

"Do you believe in alternate dimensions?" Kagura snapped her fingers, and Yukio's surroundings turned pitch black.

"What the? Uh...I believe it. The Shinobi world is so complex that it wouldn't surprise me." Yukio replied.

"So you believe that, in another dimension, you could be just a regular person?" Kagura continued asking.

"Yeah, I believe that the other versions of me are probably living a peaceful life." Yukio responded.

"Fair enough, now let's see what one version of you is doing right now." Kagura said, and Yukio's surroundings changed to a dimly lit classroom.

Wait, this is the Shinobi classroom? Why am I here-

Yukio looked down on the floor, and saw himself laying on his side. Blood was underneath the body, and a kunai was lodged into his heart. The sight shocked Yukio, as he realized where he was.

"This was where I died. This was my very first death." Yukio stated.

"Let's take a look at another dimension." Kagura said, and Yukio heard another snap.

His environment changed to outside, the sky was red and cloudy, and debris was all around Yukio. He saw a familiar creature, as it towered over everything in it's path.

Orochi, then this must be when-

Yukio looked around, and saw the corpses of the Hanzo members, all the girls except Asuka were impaled or crushed by debris. He then saw his own corpse, with the top half missing. The sight of it made Yukio want to vomit, as he remembered the feeling of when he got bit in half by Orochi.

What is this? Why are you showing me this, Kagura?

"Last one, just to prove a point." Kagura snapped her fingers again, and his scenery changed once again.

He found himself outside again. The sky was pouring rain, as Yukio stood in front of a hospital building. It was a familiar hospital, and Yukio could only guess what he was about to see.

Don't tell me this is when I...

Yukio looked down, and saw his bloody body, with his head snapped to the right. However, it wasn't the death that shocked Yukio.

Kneeling next to his corpse was Asuka, and the other Hanzo girls. This shocked Yukio, he never thought the girls mourned for his death.

I didn't do anything good at that point, why would any of them care for me?

"They blamed themselves. They knew that your death could've been avoided. Your first death, where Asuka accidentally stabbed you in the heart, she had to live with the fact that she killed an innocent civilian at school. Accidental or not, she would've been expelled and rejected from Hanzo academy." Kagura explained.

"Stop, stop it..." Yukio whimpered.

He never considered what happened to his body after he died. It was one thing to relive his past deaths, but he had to watch his friends mourn for him. All the regrets and failures from the previous lives never disappeared because that was their reality, not his.

I get it, all this was a reminder. All the pain and suffering I went through. Having to see myself fail over and over again. Is this what you're trying to do, Kagura? Are you trying to make me suffer more? Answer me!

"You've mistaken my intentions. I showed you these alternate dimensions because I'm trying to show what your power is doing." Kagura said.

"What do you mean? All you've shown me is the previous timelines." Yukio asked.

"You haven't been listening to me at all. I said these were from your alternate dimensions. They are no timelines involved here." Kagura explained.

"Then what is it? What is my Death's Restart power?" Yukio questioned, he got more annoyed.

"You're 'Death's Restart' power doesn't travel through time, but it travels through dimensions." Kagura said, her voice was uneasy.

"No way, how does that make any sense?" Yukio denied it.

"All the other versions of you are in the exact moments where you've died. When you die, that's just an alternate version of you dying. Then you take over another version of yourself, in a different dimension." Kagura explained.

"Wait, I take over another version of myself, while the version of me that died stays dead?" Yukio started to panic. "If that is true, how many versions of me are there? How many do I have left?"

Kagura remained silent for a while. Her silence made Yukio even more freaked out.

"Considering that there are versions of you that didn't get my power, or didn't become a shinobi. There has to be a limit." Kagura explained.

"So I'm not immortal?! You've got to be kidding me!" Yukio exclaimed.

I've thought there wasn't a limit to my deaths, what am I supposed to do?!

"Why are you so worried about this minor disadvantage?" Kagura asked.

"I'm constantly going to die out there! There's no way I'll be able to even last the rest of the week without at least a single death." Yukio shouted at Kagura.

The goddess sighed, "You really think you could easily die out there?" Kagura asked.

"Yeah, I've only gotten a little stronger, and I know how to fight. However, compared to everyone else, I'm dead-weight." Yukio replied.

"Maybe I should explain your other powers. The ones that are actually related to time. What did you call it again? Oh yeah, Soul Travel, that was it." Kagura changed the subject. "You can see moments in the past from someone else's point of view, whether it is someone's backstory, or a certain event." She explained.

"Oh yeah, I forgot I had that ability." Yukio responded. "Yeah, then there was the power I gained during the fight with Orochi. It made me stop time."

"Correct, you named that power Timer. It makes you freeze time. Unless you interact with certain living or moving objects while in Timer, it should only last for less than minute." Kagura continued explaining.

"Less than a minute? That's such a small amount! Well, At least I know an estimated time limit. I'd hate to be stuck in time." Yukio said.

"Then you have one last ability, it's an illusion ability that shows you past events that happened in the area you are in. Back then, you were looking for an entrance into Hebijo academy, then you saw an event of someone pushing a hidden button to open the secret entrance." Kagura explained more.

"Yeah, what should I name that one...how about 'Here and Then', you know, like 'here and now', but it's past tense?" Yukio asked for Kagura's opinion.

Kagura didn't comment, nor did she laugh or sigh at the name.

She didn't make fun of it, so I'll make it the official name.

"Are you finished?" Kagura said, a little annoyed.

"Sorry, you were saying that those powers are supposed to be useful. However, I can't control when they activate, so what am I supposed to do?" Yukio responded.

"Simple, I'll give you the ability to control them. I've been controlling your power since you got them, now I'll leave it to you." Kagura snapped her fingers.

"Ok, but how?" Yukio asked.

"The previous times you've used your powers, I had to say some incantation to activate it. Since you are now the user, simply saying the name of the power should activate it." Kagura answered.

"Seriously, it's just that easy?" Yukio had his doubts.

"Soul Travel, Timer, Here and Then, you can now use these powers to your full advantage now. Good luck." Kagura continued.

Yukio surroundings turned back into the shrine. Kagura smirked as Naraku, Kagura's guardian, led Yukio out of the shrine.

"Thank you, tell Kagura that I'm gonna need to repay her someday." Yukio said.

"Kagura only cares about your power, she wouldn't want 'payment'." Naraku replied in a snarky tone.

"Alright, pleasure meeting you..." Yukio said, sarcastically.

What is this girl's problem? Who even is she?

Yukio walked back to his dorm, and laid on his bed.

"Ugh...Kagura told me a lot in one sitting." Yukio said to himself.

First, showing me the side effects of Death's Restart. Then saying that it is some kind of dimensional wrap power. Makes no sense at all, but I know nothing about dimensional travel anyway. Then she gave me control of all my other powers. Just saying the name is enough to activate it? I probably should test that.

"I'll activate Here and Then, it's a harmless ability if something goes wrong." Yukio sat up on his bed, and lifted his arms in the air. "Here and Then."

Yukio saw a blurry figure of himself, it laid flat on the bed, the figure sat up, put his arms in the air, then froze.

Those were my actions a few seconds ago, so it does work. I think I'm starting to understand this power.

"Alright, now let's try an old reliable." Yukio got off of his bed. "Soul Travel!"

His Soul Travel ability activated, and his soul got ripped out from his body.

He opened his eyes, and was in someone else's body. He tried to look for the person's hair, but he wasn't able to see any.

So I'm able to activate it, but I can't control what event I see. Oh well, at least I could get information since this is supposed to be an important event, right?

He then noticed his surroundings. He was in a bright traditional Japanese room, with bamboo walls and red colored carpets. Along the walls were colorful doors, each door depicted an image of nature during different times of the day. The color palettes were bright yellow for sunrise, blue and yellow for midday, orange and purple for sunset, and dark purple for midnight.

The middle of the room was a small pit full of dirt, with stepping stones in and all around it. Each edge of the area was indicated by a stone lantern and a bamboo fence surrounded the perimeter. In that area, there was a bamboo Japanese water fountain, with a bunch of small moss-covered boulders surrounding it.

Yukio was standing in the dirt area with a group of four girls in front of him, their faces were clouded. However, Yukio could spot the girls' clothing. They all wore grey sailor uniform blazers with grey skirts and black stockings.

"...Hebijo academy has collapsed, along with the legendary Yoma, Orochi." One girl stated. Her voice was so deep that Yukio thought it was a man's voice at first. Yukio saw a ponytail out of the side of the figure's head.

"Oh yeah, I heard that a group of, like, high school Shinobi totally took it down." Another girl said, her voice was higher pitched. Yukio saw long wavy blonde hair behind this figure's head.

"They were from Hanzo academy, if I'm not mistaken." Another girl said, her voice sounded caring and motherly. Yukio couldn't spot any noticeable hair features for her.

Who are these girls? If they know about Hebijo and Orochi, then they all must be Shinobi too. So...wait, who's body am I in? Also why do all of these girls have the same body type as Asuka and the others? It's honestly getting annoying how many girls I've met that have the body shape of an hourglass.

"However, there is one troubling factor. A boy, with little to no skill or strength in him, was the one held responsible for taking down Orochi." Another feminine voice said, but Yukio didn't see anyone's mouth move.

So that voice must be from the body I'm in. 'Little to no skill or strength'? I mean, I don't have any ninja arts, but I have some muscles.

"There must be more to him then." The deep voice said.

"What should we do if he's a baddie?" The last girl asked, her voice was the highest pitched. Her hair was a pair of short, curved twin-tails.

"I'll go and investigate him. In the wrong hands, he could be a real threat." The girl Yukio possessed said.

Wait, what?

Yukio woke back up in his room, and almost fell to his knees.

Whoa, that was a bit nauseating. 'Find me'? Who even was that? Is someone trying to hunt me down...again?!

"You've got to be kidding me." Yukio paced around in his room.

Ok, calm down. So some girl, who I wasn't able to identify, has decided to hunt me down, all because I took down Orochi. I don't remember taking credit for that though. Asuka and Homura took Orochi down, I just stabbed it a couple times while using Timer.

Yukio wasn't sure what to do, he could go to Kiriya or the girls for help, but he didn't know who he was up against, and he didn't want to use Death's Restart so carelessly because of the 'limit' Kagura claimed him to have.

Damn, what am I supposed to do?

Yukio suddenly felt chilly, he looked around his room, and saw ice formed on his walls.

"What the...brr." Yukio was confused, but he was freezing, so he went outside his dorm. "What is happening? It's not even winter, and my AC was working fine a few seconds ago." Yukio noticed the ground at his feet was also frozen.

Yukio looked along the hallway, and saw a female figure holding a folding-fan flat against the wall of Yukio's dorm. She had shoulder-length grey hair, tied with a thick white bow. Her eyes were light blue, like the color of a bright snowy sky. Her outfit was a large white kimono, with a blue outline. She wore white socks and lavender sandals.

"I've got you." She responded, as she aimed her fan at Yukio.

"Whoa, whoa! What is all of this?!" Yukio tried to run, but his feet were frozen to the ground.

"Yukio, I am Yumi of Gessen academy. Your power has been seen as far too dangerous. If you intend to use it for evil, I will have no choice but to execute you." The female figure warned.

Shoot, all of my kunai and equipment are at school!

"Agh! I...can't...move." All of Yukio's body went completely numb, and ice started to form around his whole body.

No, this can't be happening...

"Answer me." The girl, Yumi, was unaware of Yukio's frozen body.

Yukio froze to death in front of her. A few seconds after, he fell to the ground, and shattered like glass.

To be continued...
