The Rabbit
"Did you hear, it's clear skies tonight?" I heard one girl talk to her friend about tonight's weather. A clear sky huh? On the night of a full moon, I wonder how good a picture I'll be able to get with my telescope tonight? "I wonder if we'll see the rabbit in the moon?"
I let out a laugh, rabbit in the moon, how childish can one be? Such illogical stories cannot be real, a princess from the moon born from bamboo? How, inconvincible as a thought? "Hey Senku," I looked up, the big oaf that is my friend, Taiju, getting my attention. "I have to get to work tonight, so I'll be leaving early. Sorry man, can't help you in the lab today."
"It's not a problem,." I assured. "I can handle things on my own for today. Take it easy at work okay?"
"Thanks buddy!" He exclaimed, running off leaving me alone for the evening.
Science club was certainly uneventful. Recently club members have been leaving in exploration of other school activities or due to their grades slipping, so logically, it's only a handful of members that remain hence the uneventful evenings. Fortunately, due to the first years wanting to make good impressions still, they offer to clean up afterwards, so i don't have to worry about it as club president.
I know that the reality is because they want me to focus on recruiting more members but my mind is not focused on that. The walk home is chilly, the sun having already set so I decided best to stop by a local convince store and pick up dinner. I picked up a couple of items, paying the cashier before leaving the building, hearing the loud beeping of the of entrance way. "Eww, think its dead," My ears perked up to the sound of kids, clearly bullying some poor animal. I turned, oh not kids. In fact, middle schoolers, three of them hunched over something. This is where I follow my gut, curiosity taking hold of me and I walked over, leaning above them, noticing the creature they were torturing. "Kukuku, making yourselves feel big picking on defenceless animals," I mocked, getting their attention. I smirked, pulling out a smaller version of the electro device I created as a child, shocking who appeared to be the leader.
His goonies freaked out, picking up their friend and running off with him, revealing the rabbit, a while one nether the less, that they were torturing. I observed it carefully, noticing it still breathing. Damn, all the vets are closed now but looking at the injuries, they are fairly simple. I removed my scarf, leaning down and scooping the rabbit up into my arms. It's warm, which is a good sign. I felt my smirk turn into a cringe. Just what am I thinking?
I sighed, continuing to hold it tight and carrying on the walk back to the apartment. It was certainly difficult to open the front door with a rabbit and my dinner in my hands. Once i manged to close the door and kick my shoes off, I found the throw from the back of the sofa, trying to make it a comfy nest for the rabbit while I grabbed the first aid kit. Guess food will have to wait.
I grabbed the kit, kneeling on the floor as not to shift the animal too much. I pulled out some ointment, applying it to a cotton bud before using slight pressure against the animal's wound. It flinch as i touched it's stomach, making sure the wound was cleaned and ointment was applied. It's ear twitched as i used some spare bandages to cover it up. "There, that should help you out a bit," I spoke as if it could understand me. IT look towards me, moving it's face to nuzzle my hand. I wonder if this is someone's pet. It's certainly doesn't look unkept, nice fur and seems to be a healthy weight. "Guess you'll be wanting something to eat."
It seemed as i said the word 'eat' the rabbit became more alert. It really must be hungry. I went back to the kitchen, boiling some water to fix my dinner and then started to chop some spare veg for my furry company for the night. I checked under the sink, grabbing Lillian's hot water bottle to ensure the rabbit would be warm. The veg was placed into a disposable bowl, I finished my ramen and went back to the rabbit. It's eyes lit up seeing the food and it leant forward hesitantly, taking small bites. I was careful as I placed the water bottle under the throw before turning back to the floor and eating my dinner.
My old man and Lillian have taken their daughter to meet Lillian's family in America while I stayed behind to carry on with my experiments. I am not the type to leave something unfinished. "Guess if you're alone too, we could be alone together."
