Chapter 14

Zach was the first one to wake up that Saturday morning. He got up and into his usual fun clothes, then put some headphones on his neck. He walked down to Saylor's dorm.

He knocked on the door. "Who is it?" he hears a voice call, but it didn't sound like Saylor.

"Uh, Zach," he replied.

Kyler opened the door. "Hi, I'm Kyler," she said. "You must be looking for Saylor."

Zach nodded. Kyler let him in and he saw Saylor reading a book. "Oh, hey Zach," she said. "What's up?"

"Uh, I don't know," he said. "Just kinda got bored, and I don't really know a lot of people here."

Saylor nodded. "Want to go to the park?" she asked.

"Sure!" Zach replied.

The two went to the park near McKendrick Prep. They sat on the bench. "So, tell me about yourself," Saylor said.

"Well, I'm sixteen, and me and Chase are both juniors."

"Okay, I'm fifteen, but I'm a senior, because I skipped three grades when I was twelve."

"Epic! You know, you're really cool Saylor."

Saylor blushed. She was about to reply, when a little girl came up to them. "Hi," Saylor said to the little girl. "Are you lost?"

"No," the little girl replied. "My mommy and daddy are dead."

"What?" Saylor asked.

"I escaped," the little girl whispered. "From the shelter."

Saylor took the little girl's hand. "You are just too cute," she said. "Come on, why don't I take you home?"

The little girl looked up to Saylor with pleading eyes. "Please don't take me back," she whispered.

"No, I meant my home," Saylor replied.

"Could I?" the little girl asked.

"Sure, if you tell me your name," Saylor said.

"It's Adaline," she said.

"Beautiful name," Saylor said. "Come on."

The little girl came back with the two to McKendrick Prep. "Who is this cutie?" Kyler asked.

"This is Adaline," Saylor replied.

Sapphire and Kyler introduced themselves, and Saylor gave Adaline an apple. "Okay, we're gonna go to my big brother's house," Saylor said. "He lives there with my big sister, and his girlfriend."

Adaline nodded, and followed Saylor out to the car. Jodi met them there. "Okay, why do I need to?" she got cut off when she saw Adaline. "What did you and Ricky do?"

Saylor giggled. "No, this is Adaline, I found her at the park," she replied.

"Hi Adaline," Jodi said. "I'm Jodi. So, Sayels, where are we going?"

"Jared's house."

"Why?"

"You'll see."

Jodi drove the two to Jared's house. She dropped them off and Saylor knocked on the door, holding Adaline's hand. Jared opened the door. "Hey Sayels," he said, then saw the little girl next to her. "Who's this?"

"This is Adaline," Saylor replied. "She's an orphan."

"Aw," Jared said. "Hi Adaline."

"Hi," Adaline said shyly.

"So, what's up?" Jared asked.

"I have a really big favor to ask you," Saylor said. "I need to move in with you guys."

"What?!" Jared asked.

"I really want to take care of Adaline, but Ms. Diona won't let me keep her at McKendrick."

Jared sighed. "Come in," he said. "Hannah!"

Hannah came down the stairs. "What's up Jared?" she asked.

"This is Adaline," he said. "Could you watch her for a few minutes while I talk to Saylor?"

"Sure," Hannah said, taking Adaline's hand. "Follow me, I've got some cool stuff in my room."

"Okay!" Adaline said excitedly, following Hannah up the stairs.

Jared and Saylor sat at the dining room table. "Okay, so, we've got the room, and you're a senior so Ms. Diona will allow it," Jared said. "But here's the thing, are you ready to raise a child? I mean, Sayels, you're fifteen."

Saylor nodded. "I'm mature for my age," she said. "I'm smart too. I'll be okay, I'll be a good parent."

Jared nodded. "I'll give you two weeks," he said. "A two week trial run, you get no help from anyone, and if you can manage that, I think you're responsible enough."

"Wait, Jared," Saylor said. "What if I got only one person?"

"Okay," Jared said. "Who?"

Saylor thought. "I don't know yet, I'll let you know, okay?"

"Okay."

Hannah brought Adaline back downstairs. Adaline was holding a mini soccer ball. "Saylor look!" she said excitedly.

"That's great Adaline!" Saylor said. "So, why don't we go shopping? For some new clothes?"

"Can Hannah come?" Adaline asked.

"Hannah?" Saylor asked.

"Sure," Hannah replied. "I'll drive."

The three got into the car and drove to the mall. Adaline picked out a few outfits and two pairs of pajamas. Then Hannah and Saylor helped her pick out a fancier outfit. They had her try on everything and payed for it. Then they took her to the toy store. "Pick whatever you want," Saylor said.

"Really?" Adaline asked.

"Really," Saylor replied, and Adaline was off.

She picked out a mini soccer goal that came with a pink kid size soccer ball. "I have a feeling we're gonna get along," Hannah said.

Adaline giggled.

Back at home, Saylor and Hannah set up the goal and Adaline started kicking her ball into it. Zach came over. "Hey Saylor," he said.

"How'd you know where I was?" Saylor asked.

"Jodi told me," Zach replied.

Saylor nodded, still paying attention to Adaline. The sun was begining to set. "Mind if I play with her?" Zach asked.

"No, not at all, she'd probably love that," Saylor replied.

Zach came out and introduced himself to Adaline. Then he began playing goalie for her, but badly. Saylor was pretty sure he did that on purpose.

Adaline began kicking the ball in every direction. "There's only ten seconds left on the clock," Zach narated, which made Adaline giggle. "She's going right, left, she kicks, GGGOOOAAALLLL!!!"

Zach picked up Adaline and spun her around. Jared sat next to his sister. "Picked a helper yet?" he asked.

Saylor shook her head. "Not yet."
