Chapter 12

"Alright ladies, now follow me. We will be having afternoon tea, and after that, you can spend your time doing whatever you would like. In addition, I have an announcement to make before dinner starts," Miss Harriett says.

Miss Harriet told us this morning that she was going to be our caretaker during the selection. Harriet Care is a tall, abnormally skinny, middle-aged woman, she stands probably 6' 3" plus the height her heels, making her around 6' 6". Her hair is bright ginger red and impossibly curly, all bound up into a tight bun atop her head. A few stray hairs hang out here and there though, which she constantly tries to tuck behind her ears.

Her eyes are a deep and dark brown, peering into one's soul, making you want to confess your deepest secrets out of fear. They are small and deepest, with bags hanging evidently under her eyes despite her best efforts with makeup. Her eyebrows are thin and wispy, making her look all the older, along with her sunken in cheeks and pointy chin.

Miss Harriet said that she was here to keep us on schedule and answer any questions we might have. She also told us that she was there to keep us in line and make sure we were following the rules. The rules being a long list of stupid rules including a curfew of 8 pm on weekdays and 9 pm on weekends. Guess I'll have to go out to the garden earlier and then get back earlier as well. And with dinner ending only half an hour before that on weekdays, my time will have to be short.

I don't know what it is but that gardener seems more interesting than any of the girls here or the prince. Maybe it's his mysterious and shy vibe, I always like people like that. That's how I became friends with Aly and April. Aly seemed mysterious and shy at a party of my mom's when she was hired to play the piano, and I just couldn't help but figure her out.

I decided that going during the day might not be possible as another rule is that during free time we have to stay in the sitting room unless we have permission to go elsewhere. If we don't go to the place we intended to we would get punished.

I had already asked to go to the gardens during the free time we had before lunch but it was denied. She told me that we would go out to the gardens as a group later in the week. And when I tried to explain that I want to go to the smaller garden, she said it would be better if I remained here and socialized.

After lunch, we all walk into a room similar to the one we waited in the first day before we had to go on the report. I know it wasn't the same one due to the view from the windows being different, but it is the same design. We all instinctively sit at the tables, my table consisting of Charlotte and Rosalie, of course, but also three others whom I do not know.

We all sit in silence as the tea is being served to us by some butlers of some sort. The room remained quiet until the final Butler left. "Now ladies," Ms. Harriet began, "get to know each other, you'll never know if you'll find a friend you'll need one day as Queen. So, start by saying your name, province, and a hobby."

Immediately the room bursts into an uproar, filled with people wanting to share. "Hi, I'm Rosalie..." Rosalie says, obviously nervous, "I'm from Calgary, Province twenty-seven. And umm, I guess I like to write."

"Well, I'm Charlotte, I'm from Columbia, and I like to garden!" Charlotte says in her cheery tone. Since she went after Rosalie, that means it's going around clockwise, meaning I'll be last.

"I'm Jaylee from Whites," a black-haired mousy girl says. Her hair is long and straight and her eyes are so dark they look black. "I like to dance, sing, act, ooh! And I can write scripts, direct, and write music, and like I can play the guitar a little. Like I can do simple chords and stuff but I can't do very complicated stuff."

The next girl rolls her eyes, " I'm Katherine from Yukon, and I like to be in charge. I mean, I was made for roles of leadership and power, so I'm obviously the best fit for the crown." she flips her brown hair that fades into blonde behind her shoulder and leans back in her chair.

A short quiet falls on the table before the next girl speaks, "I'm Kaelynn and I just sing." She looks down at the table before looking up to Katherine who gives her a quick side eye. Kaelynn has short blond hair and blue eyes but bangs almost completely cover them. Her skin is porcelain white, but her cheeks are very pink.

"Guess I'm up," I say, "well, I'm Adeline, but you can call me Addie. And I'm from Likely and I like to read and listen to music... That's it I guess..."

And as if on cue, the doors open and a camera crew comes in, silencing the others in the room. "oh they're here," Ms. Harriet says, jumping up from her seat excitedly. She greets them and then the cameras spread out around the room, a camera coming to our table. "These people are from the press, please be kind and answer all of their questions," Ms. Harriet says.

"So ladies how are you liking it here at the palace? One at a time please, you first," she says, pointing to Kaelynn. She squirms in her seat as the camera is pointed to her and a wireless mic is placed on her dress's collar.

"Well, I like the food and the beauty. Also, just being here makes me feel like royalty," she simply answers, the lady quickly moving on to putting the mic on Katherine.

"I like the palace itself. It almost feels like home to me, but I know it'll be my future home, so it should. Plus, the prince and I are good friends, we even did a photo shoot together once," Katherine says confidently. The lady simply nods, and again moves on around the table to Jaylee.

"I like the art in the hallways, they're very beautiful. I also like the food, too, and the service here is good. Sometimes it's hard to find good maids, but here they're very obedient and intuitive. The other staff is great, too. Like the chef and the maid that cleans my room spotless!" she then pauses, taking a deep breath.

"No, no, that's plenty, thank you," the lady hurriedly says before Jaylee can start speaking again. She somehow looks disappointed, as if she didn't say enough. But, now it's Charlotte's time to speak.

Charlotte smiles giddily as the mic is attached to her collar. "I'm happy to be here, the palace is like a dream and still seems unreal to me, I like that about the palace, it's ability to make you feel as if you're in a dream!"

The lady nods and quickly shifts the microphone to Rosalie, "I like how nice the maids are and what great a job they do. It's really wonderful."

Then it hits me that I'm next. I haven't been thinking of what to say, so what should it be? The service? The food? The fashion? No, it has to be the garden that I like the most. It's inspired me to garden more at home, yes.

"well, there's a little—" I begin, cut off by the lady.

"ooh, you're little red! Lucky us! So, what are your first thoughts of the Prince?" she leans in and the cameraman seemingly zooms onto my face.

I shift in my seat, "well, I think he seems smart, but I don't know much else. I can't really judge someone before I actually know them. Sorry I can't answer that right now."

"Press, time is up, so please finish up what you're doing. Sorry for the short time, but we do have a schedule to keep, so please hurry up," Ms. Harriet says, already escorting out a cameraman and a young man.

"No, that was perfect!" The lady says, taking the microphone away. "Thank you, ladies, we hope to speak again soon."

Charlotte sighs, "man I didn't know that the press was coming today. It felt weird to be put on the spot like that."

"Well, I'm used to it," Katherine says with a smirk. She picks up her teacup, which we all haven't drunk from yet, and takes a sip.

"Sorry that I forgot to mention that short interview ladies, but please do expect more press coverage as time goes on. Especially next week we'll be having full time filming like a reality TV show. So, please always be on your best behavior, there will be lots of cameras around!" Ms. Harriet announces.

After that, the room became loud, with everyone but the six of our table talking. For the half hour or such, we just stayed silent except for Charlotte occasionally asking about the weather or such, only getting a nod or a head shake for an answer. As soon as free time starts, we immediately all go in our own directions; Charlotte going to look at dresses and makeup, Rosalie going to her room, and the other three girls going off to someplace in the castle.

I decide to ask to go to the library, and Ms. Harriet allows me. I briskly walk towards it, desperate to read like a person wanting to shout to get out their anger.

When I get there, I immediately go inside and close the doors behind me, heavily sighing. I walk inside directly to the closest bookshelf, and from what I can see I can't tell how they're organized if at all. It's not alphabetical by author or title, and the genres don't seem to match up either. Well, I guess I can't expect much from a library that has the books that never get read. I just thought the main library might have people in it, and I'd rather avoid social situations.

My mom was at least right in the regard that they have a lot of books. Even this second library is at least three times as big as the tea room. But, I didn't doubt that, many government officials work here, so they need books to research topics and such. I begin to walk down the stacks of books, wondering where I should even start looking for a book to read.

I go into one of the last stacks and randomly choose a book. It's a hardcover red book with the title The Little Red Lamb on it. There is no cover sleeve on the book, so I flip it open to find the author's name is Charlie Mason. I flip to the first page and begin to read, the story unfolding before my eyes.

"That's a good book," I hear in my ear. I turn on my heel and take a step back, frightened by the sudden noise in my ear.

"Oh, it's just you," I say as I see the prince. He smirks and laughs.

"Just me? Aren't you more starstruck to have the prince right before your very eyes?"

"No, not really. I'm reading right now..." I say as I walk towards the back of the room to find a place to sit. "And you need to keep that ego in check if you think that every girl would be dying to meet you."

"Well, most are happy and excited when they meet me, so I was just wondering why you're not. It's really interesting to me, so please answer."

"Well, to be frank, I don't really care for any celebrity. The people they are on tv and in interviews is almost always different than how they actually are. Think of all of the scandals twos get themselves in because they're true nature shows. In magazines and on tv you act like a perfect nice guy prince, but I doubt that's exactly what you are. So, you're like a stranger to me, until I get to know you, I can't like or dislike you. I'm going to treat you like everybody else and try and get to know you the normal way, or at as normal as possible in this situation," I say, taking in a deep breath after.

"Hm, I've never heard that before. Usually, people compliment me and flatter me to no end. It's actually quite tiring and embarrassing so I'm glad you're different," he says finally following me to the back of the room.

I find a small table in the back corner and take a seat at it, opening the book again. "Yeah well if that's you're the biggest problem in life I gotta say you've got it pretty good. And that endless flattering is probably what's inflating your ego."

He begins to laugh and turns away, walking back through the stacks of books. "Well, you're very interesting, I'd like to pick that brain of yours for more opinions sometime."

"Can't wait," I say sarcastically before I hear the door open and close again. Hopefully, he isn't too annoying in picking my brain, after all, I don't really care what he thinks of me or my opinions. Maybe once he's bored of me he'll send me home, and I'm quite boring so that should happen sooner than later. I sigh, closing my book, my large appetite for reading ruined by that prince.
