11. Walking in Strides
As Harley opened the side door of the truck, she let out a deep sigh. Twirling a curl dangling upon her neck, she hoped that her decision to walk with Marti would even out the tension growing inside her stomach.
Worried about how she handled her previous approach towards her girlfriend, Harley knew she had to apologize for how she behaved earlier. And she knew that going out with Marti was a perfect opportunity to have a private moment with her.
As her girlfriend stepped out, Harley took her hand. She coaxed her to walk towards the sidewalk next to a fast food restaurant. Just looking at the store made her stomach gurgle, but Harley knew this wasn't the time to stop for a bite to eat, since their mission was to find that gas station.
It was a breezy afternoon, so thankfully the two brought their jackets to keep warm. The two walked in strides by each other, to look for their intended target.
However, Harley's boots weren't exactly the best fit for walking fast, since she had to slow down after a couple of blocks when her feet began to hurt. Trying to keep up with Marti, she struggled to keep up.
"Wait up, love. We have to stop for a minute. My feet are killing me!" Harley bent down to touch her right ankle to relieve the pain.
Turning around, Marti looked at her in dismay.
"You know, you didn't have to come down with me. I could do this on my own." she sarcastically replied, as she was annoyed that Harley even accompanied her.
"I know, but I wanted to have a private moment with you. I'm also sorry for getting you in this mishap. I didn't mean to yell at you, I just get pressured when I fight with Roman."
Harley tried to laugh it off with a joke to ease the tension happening at the moment. "Siblings fight, what can you do? We've always been this way."
Harley shrugged her shoulders while she tried to catch her breath. She was a bit cold based on what she was wearing, but as a macho woman, Harley kept it to herself.
Marti noticed her girlfriend shivering and walked next to her. She knew how hard she must have been on her.
"Are you cold? Come here and stay close to me." Marti smiled as she opened the left side of her wool jacket and placed it over her companion.
"Thanks Babe. I like this." replied Harley.
"I figured you might!" Marti grinned. "Now, let's look for this gas station before your brother hollers at us."
Harley quickly agreed and embraced her lover as they reached the end of a curb.

The sound of music started playing in Marti's shoulder bag. "Nothing gonna break my stride" by Matthew Wilder played on, amusing Harley once she heard it. Looking up at Marti she was quite astonished.
"You just happen to have that song on, resembling what we are doing right now? What a ringtone! You're so unusual, Marti! And that's why I love you."
She was about to give her partner a smooch, when Marti stopped her by mouthing the words to remain quiet.
Marti took her cell out of her purse and looked at the caller ID. As she predicted Roman was on their trail. Picking it up, he started yelling.
"Ladies, where are you? Have you seen the gas station yet? It's been 5 minutes and I haven't had a response. Sorry, but I'm getting a bit irritated here sitting by myself."
That wasn't exactly the decent kind of introduction Marti was looking for. She decided to tease him until he would calm down.
"Oh, the poor baby is impatient. Will you hold your horses? Your sister and I are still looking!"
Hearing what she said out loud caused Harley to yank the phone out of Marti's hands.
"Listen Roman, we're doing the best we can in this cold weather. I had to stop a bit since my feet started to hurt!"
"And whose fault is that Harley? I didn't ask you to wear those leather boots or to go down with Marti, did I?" Roman retorted back.
Harley let out a deep grunt. She gave the cell back to her partner and frowned. She knew there was no use in arguing with her brother.
With her phone back in her grip, Marti patted Harley's back.
"Roman, we are on our way. Please calm down. I think I see a gas sign on the other side of Fair Oaks Street. Let me walk a little closer to verify if it is indeed our intended location."
While keeping her free hand on Harley's back, she continued to cross the street to reach her destination.
Once she was there she noticed other cars filling up their gas tanks, Marti asked Roman to drive his vehicle forward to Erko's gas station.

As the two women reached the gas station, Harley saw an empty bench to sit on as she waited for her brother.
Marti was about to join her when an outburst caught her attention. A man whistled at her and made a comment that infuriated her.
"Hey Cutie Pie! What are you doing here alone?"
Marti was about to open her mouth, but Harley beat her to it.
"She's mine buddy. Move it!"
The shady ladies man with a baseball cap put his hands up to show that he acknowledged her. He smirked not knowing that he was talking to two lesbians.
"Look, I meant no harm. She's all yours, Lady. I'll be heading out now. Sorry for the trouble."
After the man left, Harley faced her lover.
"Marti, why are you such a dude magnet? First Frankie, and now that dweeb!"
Marti laughed.
"I don't know sweetie, but I know I'll always be yours, now and forever." And with that both women kissed.
Minutes later, the beep of a truck's horn interrupted the women's conversation.
"He's here. Let's go Harley, let's not keep Roman waiting."
Harley wanted to stay put, but knowing how impatient her brother could be, she agreed with Marti and stood up.
But as the two women approached the truck, two other people raced to the vehicle. Not knowing who they were, Marti and Harley became suspicious. Were they truck thieves? Did they need a getaway vehicle? Or were they even Roman's friends?
All Harley knew was that Roman would have a lot of explaining to do.
