Jayden
(This isn't a chapter, but it is still relevant to the story. It's basically Jayden's backstory. I was looking through my old stories and found Jayden's backstory. I decided to rewrite it and publish it. If you don't know what the Midnight Game/Man is, I suggest you look it up before reading this or this will be very confusing. Thank you.)
Jayden could only hear the sound of his sister's boots clicking and could only feel the hot candle wax dripping on his hand. What a great idea of Abby's to summon a demon so they can get a better bond. Before Abby and Jayden's parents went to Canada, they asked them to try doing activities that would get them closer together. Jayden expected chess, video games, or anything, but instead, Abby suggested they summon a demon.
"Oh come on," Abby teased, "don't tell me you actually believe the Midnight Man exists." She wore a fuchsia tank top and shorts, while her twin brother wore a light gray sweater and sweatpants. Jayden had explained to her how the room would suddenly feel cold if the Midnight Man was nearby, but Abby didn't listen.
Abby danced around the living room, laughing and shining the candle at Jayden's face. Jayden rolled his eyes and walked to the kitchen.
"Tell me again what will happen if the Midnight Man gets to us," Abby said as if it were all a game. Well, it technically was, just not a game to mess around with.
"He'll create a hallucination of your biggest fear and-"
"Aw, you're afraid of something that doesn't exist! That is hilarious! I'm gonna tell my friend," Abby interrupted, taking out her phone and earning look of disappointment from Jayden.
"What?" Abby asked Jayden.
"You can't use your phone," Jayden told her.
"You can't tell me what I can and can't do!"
Jayden sighed, obviously giving up on his sister. To be honest, they never really got along, so it was no surprise this whole "summoning a demon" thing wasn't turning out as planned.
They both had different hair colors, different eye colors, different everything. Sometimes Jayden wondered if he was adopted.
The fire on Jayden's candle began to flicker. Sooner or later, Abby's candle did the same. Abby stuffed her phone back in her pocket. She looked at the candle and laughed.
"You see what happens when you buy cheap candles from the dollar store?" Abby asked. She placed her fingertip on the fire.
"He's near," was all that Jayden said.
Abby responded by rolling her eyes as far as they could go. She continued playing with the fire. Suddenly, she started singing a song to the tune of The Muffin Man.
"Oh, do you know the midnight man? The midnight man, the midnight man? Do you know the midnight man that's hiding in our house," she sang.
Jayden felt like dumping all the candle wax on Abby's head, but he also didn't want to hurt her...that badly.
Abby's candle flickered more, until the fire completely went out. Abby let out a high pitched screech and clinged on to Jayden, whose candle was still on. She had dropped her candle in fright, so now there was a candle rolling towards Jayden's feet. Abby then pushed Jayden off her. She gave him a death stare.
"That was not funny!" She cried out.
Jayden's face had turned even whiter. Every muscle in his body was frozen in shock. Abby waved her hand in front of his face, snapping him out of his thoughts. Jayden shook his head and came back to reality.
"You have ten seconds," he choked out.
Abby lifted an eyebrow in confusion. She picked up her candle and blew away the smoke.
Jayden took out his lighter with one hand and held his still lit candle with the other. He nervously tried lighting the candle, but each time, he failed. His hands started shaking, causing him the drop his candle and lighter. He felt around until he grabbed a can of salt. Before he sprinkled a circle of salt around him and his sister, he saw a shadow fly towards him. He felt sharp claws dig through the skin on his shoulder. He let out a blood curling scream, and before he knew it, he was on the floor.
Abby stared at her brother's motionless body in the dark. She covered her mouth with her two hands and paced around the room, unaware of what to do. Just when she had broken enough rules, she turned on the light, illuminating the room. Abby gasped. Everything looked normal. Nothing looked possessed. The reason she gasped was because her brother was no longer on the floor.
"Jayden!" She called out. No response.
"What am I going to tell mom and dad?" She asked herself.
"Jayden! Stop playing games and come out!" She yelled again.
When there was no response, she sighed and went to her room. She jumped on her bed and fell into a deep sleep, hoping when she woke up, everything would be back to normal.
Abby was awakened by her lamp flickering on and off. It was a little past 3 in the morning, and it looked very dark outside. She rubbed her eyes, yawned, and sat up.
"Quit messing with the lights, Jayden," she said. She looked around her room and saw a human like shadow walking around her room. It let out a laugh that was similar to Jayden's.
Abby focused on the shadow. It had Jayden's same fluffy hair, laugh, and that tear on his shoulder. No way could it be Jayden. Jayden stood in front of Abby.
"Jayden?" She asked.
When that name came out of her mouth, Jayden lowered his hands. As he lowered his hands, Abby and her bed sunk down, deep into the Earth. Abby looked up as she got deeper and deeper into the ground. She noticed her bed had turned into wood. Dirt was getting in her eyes and on the wood. Jayden waved goodbye and threw a load of dirt towards Abby.
There was a scream, then there was silence.
Abby opened her eyes and saw that the roof was wood, and awfully close to her face. A small, dim light bulb hung from the ceiling. Abby glanced down at her feet. They hit more wood. She tried stretching out her arms, but there was no space for her to do so. She was in a coffin, and she was still alive. One of her biggest fears.
Abby had tears in her eyes. She wiped them the best she could with her shoulder, since her hands weren't of use at that time.
"Get me out of here! Please! Jayden!" She begged. More tears came out her eyes. She gave up trying to dry them all.
She kicked the roof of the coffin and yelled more.
"Help me!" She cried.
She kicked one more time, this time harder than before, causing the small light bulb to turn off. She yelled once again.
She sobbed quietly. Then she yelled out in pain when she felt a sharp sting on her stomach. She opened her eyes and the darkness was gone. But three girls replaced the coffin. One was throwing punches at Abby. Another was laughing. And the other was giving Abby hard kicks on her stomach.
Abby curled into a fetal position and groaned in pain. She examined the girls' faces and saw that they were her friends.
"Jessica! Luna! Melanie! I thought we were friends!" Abby cried out.
The three girls stopped what they were doing and began laughing harder than they ever had before. Jessica stepped forward, a smirk on her face.
"Friends?" Her voice cracked. "What fantasy do you live in?"
"Go away!" Abby shouted.
Her tears fogged up her vision, preventing her to see what she thought were her friends. The laughter became muffled, then turned into a high pitched noise that she was positive even a deaf person could hear. When the noise died down, Abby sat up. Everything was gone. She sat on a soft surface. She soon realized it was her bed.
She sniffed back the tears. She had never been so glad to be back home. The light turned on by itself. The clock read 3:33. Jayden stood in front of her, the cloth from his shoulder was still torn but the blood had dried. The two stared at each other for a while before Jayden kneeled down to hug his sister.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered in Abby's ear.
Abby let out some muffled sobs, tears, but no words. She gave her brother a squeeze, trying to do everything in her power to stop her crying. However, nothing seemed to be working.
"I'm so, so sorry," Jayden apologized once again.
