chapter 4

It was a cold evening.

6:45 PM was written on the poster.

With your denim-themed clothes, you finally walked inside the courtyard where lights spreading across the large area. Tables were set aside, making space in the middle, where the stage was located, the words 'DENIM' crafted in cardboard with a glittery border.

The banner you help put out were sparkling with the help of the lights. Party music was playing in the speakers. A few people are present, maybe it's because you went too early. They were on their phones, either taking selfies or playing their multiplayer games.

The whole time you were observing, you noticed a hand waving left and right. You connected the hands to the owner and it was your best friend, Alya.

You instantly had this surprised look on your face, running towards her. Halfway, she stood up with open arms and pulled you in for a tight hug, with the possibility of ruining your hair.

"You look so cute!" Alya praised, placing her hands on your arms covered with the sleeve of your jacket.

You rolled your eyes good -naturedly. "Oh, stop it. You're way more cuter!"

Indeed she was. She wore the same styled jacket as you. The only difference was the darker color and the sleeves only reaches her elbow. Underneath was a black shirt, paired with ripped jeans.

The two of you sat down, your small bags placed on the table.

You then heard Alya call your name. "Let's take a selfie!" You gave a curt nod and allow her to raise the phone a bit far for your faces to fit the frame. You both gave your best smiles and she pressed the button, capturing it. "Thanks!" She typed in a quick caption and posted it on her social media.

"Where's Marinette?" You asked, fiddling with your fingers as you spoke. People were slowly flooding inside the courtyard with their own flashy outfits.

"Oh, she's on her way. Don't worry."

You nodded in reply. You saw Chloe with her outfit, she was slowly gaining attention as she walked to her table, with Sabrina in tow.

"I'm here, I'm here!" You turned your head and watched as Marinette took a seat beside you. She set her bag down and took a breather.

Alya smirked. "Nice outfit, Marinette. Looks like someone's gonna take you dancing later."

The raven-haired girl blushed at the statement. "No, no! I'm not even looking forward at the slow dance." She crossed her arms.

There's a slow dance? Your mind was spinning. It then conjured a scenario out of thin air. It was...

You and Adrien slow dancing...

The lights were dim and the song was mellow. There were other students around but you couldn't seem to care. All that matters was Adrien staring at you with those green eyes of his. His hands wrapped around your waist, with your own hands on his shoulders.

He smiled a wonderful smile, before leaning in-

"Y/N?" Marinette nudged your elbow, making your thoughts fly away. You blinked a few times. "What about you?"

"What about me?"

"Is someone gonna dance with you?"

"Me? Psh, not a chance." You chuckled. Yoi knew it was too good to be true. No one will have the courage to dance with you tonight.

Alya rolled her eyes. "Come on, Y/N. It's our final year together! We gotta make it count, ya know? Unless..."

You seem to notice Alya scooting closer to you with her chair. Marinette seemed to know the gist and had a smirk on her face as well. "U-Unless what..?" You dared to ask.

"Unless you want Adrien to dance with you?"

Flashbacks from Alya's birthday surfaced in your mind. Then it switched to the scenario your brain just came up with. It all appear to be pointing at a big sign that says, 'You should dance with Adrien!!!"

"No," you said, smiling nervously. "Please change the subject-"

"Oh, no, you two will be dancing later tonight." Marinette cut off.

"Yeah, just like you did in my birthday."

You sweat-dropped. Seems like you weren't the only one to remember that faithful moment. You then looked Alya directly in the eye. "Please no."

But she wasn't looking back at you. She wore a smug look. "Speak of the devil."

You glanced at the blond boy walking towards his seat which was just behind you. He waved at the three of you, earning all wave backs, except yours was lame and weak.

You then averted your gaze from him to Alya, who was still smirking. You wished you could just smack it out of her face.

Eventually, at 7pm the event had started, Rose hosted the party, with Nino as the DJ. The courtyard was beginning to get crowded.

All of you had fun in the fist half of the event. With some icebreakers, it made you all laugh. Luka's band played songs. You did not know Rose can sing. Well you do now.

"Okay, folks!" Rose said, clearly breathless from the rocking earlier. "It is now time for our slow dance! Get your partners and dance your hearts out!"

The lights began to dim and the spotlights were pointing in the middle of the yard. Students shyly walked towards their partners, their faces bashful.

You gotta admit, it made you smile a bit.

Someone cleared their throat behind you. The three of you turned at the person. "May I have the favor of taking Alya Cèsaire to a fancy dance?"

"Okay, fancy boy." The girl gave him a smirk as she stood up, immediately taking Nino's offer by placing hand in his. The two of them went to the dancefloor.

"Well," Marinette faced you. "I guess it's just you and me then-"

"Um, Marinette?" Someone quietly spoke. You turned around and caught a glimpse of a tomato-colored hair so you immediately knew who it was.

"Nathaniel?"

With this, you smirked. You waited.

"Uh-" he cleared his throat. "Do you-do you- um... maybe wanna go... on a dance with-with me?"

You could see Marinette's face flushed. It had complimented her hair color which made her look even more beautiful. The said girl looked at you for approval in which you instantly said yes.

She was good at keeping her excitement down as she held the boys hand and headed straight to the ballroom. You watched the two pairs, dancing, laughing.

You could only imagjne yourself being with them, with your own partner. The one filling your thoughts.

Someone called your name. But it was not Adrien.

Sabrina had grabbed your wrist. "Let's go to the dance!"

"Wait, don't you have a partner?" You tried to stop her, but she was too strong.

"No, only Chloe gets those... but it's okay! We'll just dance as pals! You, me, Alix, and others!"

You were dragged to the other end of the dancefloor, basically where singles hanged out. Before you could sit down, Sabrina dramatically pulled you up again. "Come on, here! I wanna take a picture of you. You really look gorgeous tonight."

You weren't sure how to respond to that, but nonetheless you comply to her request. You just stood there with your face (just pose anything you like) staring into the camera.

You walked towards her, trying to see if you looked decent in her photos. "You look so pretty!" Sabrina praised yet again. "It's a shame nobody seriously asked you for a dance."

You smiled. "It's okay. It's just a dance."

Suddenly, someone had grabbed your hand. It had sent your heart into a frenzy and you could feel an incoming headache from the whiplash. Is it...?

"Hello, L/N."

You rolled your eyes good-naturedly at the voice. "Kim. Greetings. What brings you here?"

"I'm here to take a pretty girl on a dance. That's what I said the other day, right?"

"Yeah." The two you continued to sway back and forth, until someone grabbed your hand again and it wasn't Kim. It was Nathaniel. "Woah, hey." It kinda surprised you that it was from Kim to Nathaniel so quick.

"Hello."

You smiled. Seeing his reddened face, he must've had the best night in his entire life. "So, how'd it go?"

"Oh, it was amazing!" Nathaniel gave you a wide smile, his grip around your waist slightly tightening because of the giddiness he had felt. His face could match the color of his hair. "I felt like we talked for hours. It felt like a dream come true. She felt a dream come true."

Your heart swelled at his story. "Aww."

"Is it- is it bad if I... ask her out? I-I know there's something happening between her and Adrien and I just don't want to be-"

"No, Nathaniel." You interrupted him. "It's okay, you can ask her out. Nothing is between her and Adrien. I hope." You whispered the last sentence.

"What?"

"Nothing! It's nothing. Forget about it. Yeah, you should totally ask Marinette. You two are made for each other!"

That made Nathaniel look down with his cheeks flushed. "Do you... do you think she likes me?"

"Of course, dude. I know she likes you. Where is Marinette anyway?"

"Oh, she's with Nino. We boys figured that we should dance with every girl in our class." He suddenly had this smug look in his face that made you want to slap it off.  "Maybe you could have a chance with Adrien-"

"Shut up." It was your turn to go fifty shades of red this time.

Not too long, Max had asked you to dance. It went from him to Nino, then Ivan, then  Luka (who sang to you while the two of you danced, his voice was so dreamy) then Marc.

Still no sign of the blond.

While dancing, you can see him inviting others to dance; Mylene, Rose, Alix, Juleka.

It made your heart produce a dull, continuous pain. You cannot make it stop.

Everyone was checked off your list. You've danced to every boy in your classroom now. Only one person remained unmarked on your list.

You sat down on your seat. Surely he didn't forget his plans to dance with you right? After all, he told everyone that he will dance with every girl in his class.

Now he even got a dance with Kagami, the girl who wasn't even in your class!

Rose reached for the microphone. "10 minutes left till dinner! Make sure we danced with everyone!"

You scoffed inwardly. Yeah, right.

Your resentment soon turns into sadness. He did not dance with you, even a second. He took his precious time with that Kagami girl, not even making time with you, his best friend.

Atleast, a best friend dance is going to be okay for you. You were looking forward to this the whole evening, only to the find out that he doesn't really plan on dancing with you.

He even had a smile plastered on his stupid face.

You watched him from meters apart. Your heart seemed to sing along to the slow song. You could swear that your tears are threatening to come out, but not tonight. You wouldn't.

"Let's go back to our respective seats as we will now proceed to dinner! Enjoy, everyone."

So far, you only wanted to go home.

But finally, you can now eat. It was a self-service type of thing, where you get your own plate of food. It caused a long line. Being a kind friend you are, you already got three plates for you and your girls.

They got in the line first before you did, bit it was okay. After serving their preferred food, Alya and Marinette walked back to the table, greeting you on the way back.

Then it was your turn. You served yourself your own choice of meals. Afterwards, you began to trek towards your round table, doing your best to balance the things in your hands.

When you got there, you slowly halted. You saw Lila. "Hey," you can hear her saying it to Marinette. "Can I sit here? I don't see any seats left so..." She already sat down without waiting for the other's answer.

You pursed your lips. They seem to have forgotten you for a second there... You saw Mylene, Rose and Juleka laughing at Alya's joke. They all looked so happy in their table... without you.

You looked around and searched for any vacant seat you can sit on. Luckily, you had found one and it was over... at Adrien's table.

You did not have a choice. You were upset and hungry all at the same time. You just did not want that thought appearing again.

You cleared your throat, making the boy looked up in your direction. "Uh, can I sit here?"

"Um, sure." He answered, a bit confused. You sat down across from him. You were facing him. "What happened?" Adrien leaned his head to the right and try to look at the old table located right behind you. He had to shout the words a bit because of the music booming out of the speakers.

You shook your head. "Nothing, uhm-" You. looked behind, just to see them laughing. You turned away, facing the tablecloth. "I guess, there aren't any vacant seats."

"But... don't you sit there?"

"Yeah, but it's okay. I just- I just wanna eat." You gave him a reassuring smile. A smile that did not reach your eyes. You were sure he wouldn't notice it. You picked up your utensils and began to try and ingest your food. It tasted bitter in your mouth, but you managed to keep it in and swallow it.

You failed to notice him just staring at you in concern. His own food left untouched. Your running thoughts vanished when you saw him scooting his way over to you.

"What are you doing."

He did not answer.

Instead, he placed a hand on your back and began to rub it in a soothing way. You were inflicted; was it supposed to make you feel better or worse? Other than that, it was plain embarassing.

He couldn't do this to you.

He just shouldn't.

"It's okay," He said it like a mantra.

No, it's NOT! It is NOT OKAY! IT WILL NEVER BE OKAY-

He stopped.

You blinked. "Thanks," you muttered. He still hurt you, but you needed this, even though he was one of the reasons you were feeling like this. "You should eat now."

"Okay, he stood up and reached for his plate across him. You stared as you realized that the two of you will be sitting next to each other. So closely.

He turned and gave you a smile. Your eye twitched. You wanted to slap the guy so bad.

But you shouldn't care. The taste of the food is what matters, and it was surprisingly good. What a break from the usual cafeteria lunch.

You cleared your throat. "Did you enjoy the dance?"

"Oh, yeah, I did." Adrien chuckled. "It was so fun."

"Oh, yeah?" You countered. "You danced with the girls?"

"Haha, yeah. I even danced with Marinette! I was surprised it wasn't awkward like I thought it was..."

Your breath hitched. He danced with Marinette and not you. How freaking stupid was that.

In your head, you began to point out the reasons why he wouldn't dance with you. Was it because your breath smells weird- no, I brushed my teeth after I showered- was it because he thinks your outfit sucked- well considering his father was a fashion designer, I supposed he may think so- was it because he felt awkward since you confessed your feelings for him-

"Y/N?"

You shook your head. "Y-yeah?"

"I said, what about you? Did you enjoy the dance?"

"Uhm, yeah... I did."

He suddenly had the audacity to have this smirk on his face. "Oh, yeah, I can see it in your eyes when you were dancing with Nathaniel."

Wait, he was watching me?

"What are you talking about?"

"Aren't the two of you together?"

You stared at him, mortified. "No! Gosh, no. Why would you think of that?"

"I just thought that you are always hanging out with him. Maybe, I don't know, you and him..."

"Whatever it is you're thinking, you better stop it. Besides, he definitely has a thing for Marinette."

"Wait, really?" Adrien asked. You nodded. He sighed. "Can't really blame him. Marinette's the greatest."

You sighed knowingly. Here we go again. "Too bad she rejected you." Your eyes widened at your sudden boldness. Where did the bluntness come from? You cautiously glanced at him to see his reaction.

"Ouch, Y/N." He feigned a hurt look on his face, clutching his chest. He gave you a pained smile. "Way to bring back awful memories."

Of course you're the nice one. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay," he chuckled. "I'm kinda... over it by now."

"That's good. I don't want to hear dramatic messages from you ever again."

This time, Adrien had laughed out loud. And because his laugh was contagious, you chuckled with him.

Because of that, he made your night a bit lighter.

Because of him, you could say that you are alright for now.
