16 Learning to Skate

POV Jackson

Three years went by and I had customers but haven’t seen the little girl who back then wanted me to tell her about guardians. Now she would be around sixteen years old. Today it was a bright day and I cleaned the shelves and dusted the guardian characters. The door was opened and closed.

“Please do come in. How may I help you?” I was still dusting my glass work.

“My mother needs a new vase to display her flowers in her shop.” A shy familiar voice spoke to me and I dropped the Bunny character I was cleaning. “I see that your work really doesn’t break. Didn’t you manage to sell those?”

I glanced on my right side. There she was with her raven black hair and emerald green eyes. She was the little girl but somehow different. She had soft looking rosy lips and she was taller. She was more mature and I felt blood running on my cheeks. “Uh, hello. Y-Yes my work won’t break like I told you.” I quickly lifted up the Bunny from the floor before she noticed me blushing. What is wrong with me? I shake my hand as I see some frost coming out from it. Are my feelings getting out of control?

I cleared my throat. “Haven’t seen you in a while miss and to be honest these characters are for display only. You seem grown up now,” I managed to pull myself together and smirked.

She was looking at vases and picked one. “ This will be good. Sorry that I haven’t visited. It just would have seemed odd if a girl in her teens visited a shop what a twenty-year old keeps.” She smiled at me.

“Well maybe if you say so. You can have it as a gift. I still think you as a friend.” I shook her hand and she didn’t let go.

“My name is Fern. Like the plant, you know. My mum has a flower shop nearby and she likes the fact that my name also means sincerity.” She was staring at my eyes like waiting for something. “I don’t think that I ever told you my name when I visited your shop. I didn’t catch your name also?” She smiled shyly.

”Uh, my name. Sorry, no one has ever asked. I’m Jackson.” I rubbed my neck and I offered my hand. She shook my hand, ”Nice to meet you Jackson.” It was true, I have kept myself alone for years. Avoiding mortals was now a habit, otherwise I might draw too much attention since I am not aging.

“Thanks for the vase. You know that young people are wondering why you never go anywhere besides food store. Why is that?” Ok, maybe the town is getting suspicious of me after all, I’m thinking.

“But I do! Every night,” I tell her. ”No one has seen that. It is also odd that the king himself visits you every month even though he is really old now.” Her stare felt like it could see right through me.

“Well. He needs a lot of vases. I will show you that I come out! Let’s go skating tonight.” I smiled with confident look. Fern seemed shocked. ”Don’t you take the dare?” I gave her a sly smirk. She was almost out from my shop when she yelled in high tone, “Sure!”

“See you in few hours!” I laughed and she quickly left from the front door. Finally someone to talk to, someone else besides my family.

POV Fern

Well. I didn’t see this to happen. Me, ice skating? Oh god, what if I fell and broke something. Few hours had went by and I was walking in the crispy winter night near Jackson’s shop. I noticed him coming out from the shop.

He was waving and smiling at me. His skates were hanging on his shoulder. He dressed good as usually. I noticed that he wore boots with snowflake pattern. Oh god, I have to look at him and not at his feet all the time. I let my face go upper on his body. His trousers were neat looking and brown. He had a blue wool jacket with more snowflake patterns and blue gloves. He had pale skin and almost blue lips, I hope he isn’t freezing. Then I noticed his white hair that was little messy looking despite he always had nice looking clothes. “Are you alright?” He had reached me and was standing in front of me.

“Oh yes, absolutely.” I was lying, I was afraid to skate. Then I met his eyes, they were a color of warm brown and I realized that he was quite good looking. Now I realized why my friends were teasing me about going to his store and speaking with him years ago. I blushed immediately and turned around and started walking to the nearby pond.

He rushed behind me. ”Don’t tell me that you’re freezing? I don’t want you to have frostbites because skating at night,” Jackson sounded concerned, I think he saw me blushing. This is why I started to avoid him I remember.  Not because what everyone else would think but because of my thoughts also. I realized his cuteness when I was thirteen and I think that would not be a good thing. He was a good friend to me.

POV Jackson

Fern truly is a bit clumsy. She sinks to snow from time to time when we walk through the forest. There is a pond in which younger people go for skating. I laugh when Fern falls inside of a pile of snow.  I have to help her out because she is stuck from her waist.

“Let me help you miss!” She looked bothered when I lifted her up. “Don’t call me miss, Jackson. I’m not little anymore and you know my name already,” she pushed me and I fell inside the snow. “Alright, fine. Help me up, please. Fern?” I begged and she gave me her hand which she used to pull me up. Normally I would have used the wind to help me keeping balance but I don’t wan’t her to notice that I am unusual.

“I wonder why you won’t sink to snow. There is lots of it,” she looked curious while she watched me wiping the snow from my clothes. “Oh, I guess that I ate light meal today,” I knew perfectly that my powers kept my steps light. I was npw pulling her from her hand towards the pond. When we reached the pond, it was surrounded by trees that had branches filled with heavy snow. The trees where shimmering from frost. However the pond wasn’t on ice. I guess that my dad hasn’t had time to visit this place for a while.

“Yep, that does it. Now we can go back because we can’t skate,” she sounded relieved when she turned around.

I went on my one knee on the ground and smiling. Then I touched the water. The water stayed still and the ice started to form. Curvy frost patterns danced on the surface of the ice. I put on my skates and jumped on the ice. “Oh come on! It is fine, you see. Just put on your skates,” I yelled to her. When she turned around she looked terrified.

“Let me help you,” I walked on snow with my skates and brought her to a stone where I helped her to sit down. I gently changed her shoes to ice skates and pulled her up. “No Jackson, this isn’t good,” she cried and lost balance. She was now hanging on my neck which took me a while to get her off.

I took her hands in mine, “It is fine, you see. You won’t fall when I am here. Try to stand when I let go, alright?” She nodded to me but seemed insecure still. She was balancing on her skates when I let go of her.

POV Fern

I watch when Jackson goes to do some tricks with his skates. This boy is so out of control. Now he came back and took a hold from my hands, he skated backwards and he pulled me after him. It was actually fun, I think. I watched my feet and finally I felt comfortable enough to watch his face. His smile was wide and I smiled back. Then he let go and skated couple feet away from me.

“Good job Fern! Now skate to me. I will wait for you,” Jackson called me. Slowly I moved towards him. He had his hand in front of him, waiting for me to grab it. Then I lost balance and saw his smile change to a focused look. I was falling.

POV Jackson

I see how Fern is about to fall. I am too far away, with normal skating I wouldn’t reach her in time. I called the wind and it lend me its power. Soon I caught Fern, she didn’t notice my flying.  I was little late though, she fell on top of me and I hit my head on solid ice.

“Jackson!” Fern gasps and I open my eyes. She is staring at me, I start to sit and she sits on my lap. I rub my head, “Ouch. Are you ok Fern?” I look at her but she doesn’t react so I shake her from her shoulders. “Fern!” I call her name and she makes my hands let go of her, “I am fine. Just in a little shock, I guess.”

Fern stood up and smiled, “I didn’t hurt myself. I will try again.” I am happy that she is alright and smiling now. I skate on the other side of the pond, close to a rock. I give more distance to her since I have idea.

I touch the rock when she is not watching and frost patterns start to appear. Now there are frosted roses. “Fern! You really need to see this!” I shouted and she laughed. I know that she likes flowers and even her mother owns a flower shop.

She skated slowly at me and she couldn’t stop her speed. Again she crashed on me, I was now the only thing between her and the rock. “I’m so sorry,” she looked at me ashamed way. “Don’t be, you’re just learning,” I grinned.

“Wow, what are these. They are like ice roses! So awesome!” She noticed the patterns I had made. I laughed and helped her to back up. “Yeah, these I wished for you to see,” I touch the rock which she is admiring.

Then I heard a noise in the forest. I look to my right and I see dad. He is staring at us and grinning. “Wait a moment, “ I told Fern when I made my way to he place where I saw Jack Frost, my dad. At the forest I yelled, “Hey. Dad, I saw you!”

Whoosh.

“Hello, Jackie,” dad laughed and landed in front of me. He was smirking and clenching his staff in his hands.

POV Jack

Jackie came to me when he saw me. I had just came to Arendelle to finish my job of bringing winter, however it turned out that I came here for nothing. Jack had frozen the pond already and he was with someone. “So--,” I started and winked my eye, “--who is that girl?”

Jackie sighed, “You mean Fern? She is a friend of mine.” Jackie smiled and jerked his head to his right. “I thought that you were supposed to bring the winter? There was no ice when we came?” Jackie laughed and I went to mess his hair. “Haha, been a bit busy. You know,” I grinned to him and he quickly ruffled his hair. Not that it matters though since he inherited my hairstyle.

“How long will the winter be?” Jackie asked. “Well, it is march so it will last at least a month,” I responded and knocked a tree with my staff. The surface started to freeze. “Good! I still want to skate this winter!” Jackie laughed and glanced over his shoulder.

“I should go back,” Jackie smiled. “Yes, I will also go back to my guardian duties,” I chuckled and I saw how Jackie left. I lied to my son, actually I floated in the air to a nearby tree. I sat there and watched how Jackie run back.

I saw how Jackie took out a bag which was holding a bottle for hot drink. He poured some hot chocolate for him and the girl. I felt a mischievous grin on my face as I watched them. The girl looked at Jackie and managed to spill her drink over her. Her black wool jacket was wet.

Then I witnessed something interesting. Jackie took out his jacket and placed it on Fern who seemed surprised. “Won’t you be cold?” Fern gasped and I cocked my eyebrow when I waited for my sons respond. “I don’t feel the cold,” Jackie shrug his shoulders. My son alright, I had to hold on to my laughter.

I wipe some tears of laughter from my eyes and I look up. I see the moon and I smile. “What are you up to now, Manny?” I whisper when I hear the conversation getting muffled. Jackie was walking back to Arendelle with that girl. I jump up to air and fly through the air. I arrive back to North Pole and embrace Elsa.

“Guess what,” I whispered to Elsa’s ear. “What is it now, Jack?” She kissed my cheek. “Jackie has a friend,” I smiled to Elsa. Elsa laughed happily, “Finally! Oh, it has been many years from the last time. Mortal?” Elsa seemed excited and I nodded. “Yup, a mortal alright and a girl,” I rub my neck. Elsa gives out a sly smirk and raises her eyebrows, “Mmmm.. so a girl? This is interesting.” I nod to her, I must agree with that one.
