CHAPTER EIGHT
But it was too late, the door shut and he left taking her broken heart with him.
Josh raked his fingers through his hair. 'I am so sorry Caitlin,' he groaned.
'So am I,' she responded with no emotion.
'I wish there was something I could do, to rectify things,' he consoled.
'Stay away from him,' Caitlin dejectedly warned Josh, 'he's paranoid where you're concerned.'
'I know now, things can never go back to the way they were between you and I. I did not realize things were that serious.'
'Josh would you mind please, I'd rather be alone,' she whispered.
He lifted his hands in the air, 'Yes off course, it's the least I can do and again, I am sorry Caitlin.'
Not trusting herself to speak, Caitlin nodded, not looking at him, as Josh walked out. Caitlin hurriedly dialed Nicholas' mobile.
'Nick Brenthurst.'
'Nicholas, I didn't do anything wrong. I __ .'
He cut off the call not allowing her to finish. Caitlin cried out her frustration, climbed off the bed and went to the settee. She raised her knees up to her chest hugging her ankles, her cheek resting on her knees.
Oh Nicholas, how could you walk out on me? You were so wrong. Why did you not allow me to explain? Don't you know, it's you, only you that I love?
She felt guttered, her heart cried profusely, but no tears came from her eyes. Caitlin's eyes caught the bouquet Nicholas had brought. A beautiful bouquet of red rose buds. Walking to it, she picked up the card. It was signed, "all my love, Nicholas."
Caitlin held the card against her heart. 'Nicholas, I love you,' she whispered to herself.
My life is empty without you.
The door opened and in walked her doctor. Caitlin was glad her back was to the door, it allowed her a few moments to regroup. She summoned a smile as she turned around.
'Good news, I hope Doctor Kingston!'
'Definitely Miss Sinclair,' he smiled back, 'I am discharging you today,' he replied.
'Thank you,' Caitlin was relieved.
'Mr. Brenthurst, had called me earlier, he said he'd try and get here by two, I guess he could not make it.'
So that's why Nicholas rushed back.
He wanted to be here for her, when the doctor discharged her.
Oh my darling!
Without waiting for an answer, the doctor continued, 'I'll just write a script for your medication, and as soon as you've packed, you'll be free to go.'
He smiled again, looking around at all the flowers. 'This place is more busier that the florist's shop,' he observed, with a grin. 'You're loved very much, Miss Sinclair, and I'm not surprised either, you certainly are a strikingly beautiful young lady,' he remarked sincerely.
There's only one person's love, I want right now.
'Now promise me, you will start eating your meals regularly. Your body needs its nutrition, ' his tone was gentle.
She hung her head. Feeling ashamed of her irresponsibility.
'Yes doc. I'm sorry.'
He nodded. 'Is there somebody to escort you home?' he enquired.
Wouldn't it have been wonderful, if Nicholas were here. He would lift me up, carry me into the penthouse. He would have spent the night. Maybe I would have surrendered__
'I'll call Rebecca.' Caitlin replied, 'thank you Doctor Kingston.'
Caitlin started to pack her personal effects into her case. She packed her precious stuffed toy carefully into a discreet flap of the case.
'Stay there, till we get home Minx,' she whispered.
She named it that after the endearing way Nicholas always teased her. Carefully she wrapped the leather bound poems and put that safely in her bag as well. She was almost done when Rebecca waltzed in. Her friend hugged her. 'This florist shop is not going to fit in the car!' she greeted Caitlin.
'Hi, how are you? I'm doing great, thanks for asking!' Caitlin responded irritatedly. Rebecca knew when to keep her lips pursed. Caitlin buzzed Nurse Tyler.
'I'll just take the one,' Caitlin informed Rebecca.
'Oh I'm kidding, you could take a couple more,' she offered.
'It doesn't matter. I'd like Nurse Tyler to distribute them around.'
'Thank you so much for taking care of me, it really made the stay here a little more pleasant.' Caitlin smiled.
Well the best were all the unforgettable moments with Nicholas, but we won't dwell on that now.
"Remember our conversation now. Don't lose heart,' she encouraged Caitlin."
Caitlin felt the colour rising to her cheeks.
'What was that about?' Rebecca asked curiously.
'She was just being matronly,' Caitlin lied.
A porter helped them to the car. Caitlin slipped the card from the bouquet into her pocket. She hugged the nurse and the matron, and said goodbye, to everyone they passed and slid into Rebecca's car.
'You're flippin more popular, than a celebrity!' her friend eyed her enviously.
Caitlin laughed, 'there was not much to do there, so you end up chatting to everybody else. It's so good to be going home, I can't wait to climb into my own bed.'
Her penthouse smelt fresh and clean and inviting.
'I want to take a shower,' I'll be fifteen minutes,' Caitlin promised.
Caitlin went to her bedroom and shut the door. She needed to try to convince Nicholas again, perhaps if he would just allow her to explain, she dialed his private number.
'Nick Brenthurst.'
Caitlin was dumb founded, she did not know what to say.
'Nicholas, can we talk, it's not what you think__.'
'I don't need an explanation after what I saw,' he interrupted her and slammed the phone down before she could get another word in.
No, Nicholas!' Please don't throw me out of your life. I need you.
It was going to be painful picking up the pieces. Her life was a never ending roller coaster with Nicholas. The good times were so beautiful and memorable, the ugly ones so painful. She showered, slipped into comfortable sweatpants, and went in search of Rebecca, who seemed to be busy in the kitchen.
'So how's your love life?' Caitlin asked.
'Shooting straight from the hip and this from the lady who is the epitome of tact and diplomacy,' Rebecca laughed.
'I was just curious you know, being pregnant and all, I wondered__'
'Caitlin! I dare say somehow, your brain has not managed to remain unscathed locked up in that hospital.'
'If only you knew the thoughts that ran through my mind at night.' Caitlin finished.
'Speaking of love life, how's yours?' Rebecca threw back.
'What love life?' Caitlin enquired, nibbling on a celery stick.
Rebecca raised her eyebrows, as she continued grating the carrot sticks.
'Would you like my help with anything?' Caitlin offered.
'I am very confused,' Rebecca ignored her offer of help. 'In one instance there is this chemistry between you and Nick, then on other occasions there is this great divide, like the wall of China, and then there is also Josh!' Rebecca groaned.
Sensitive subject. Don't go there.
'What is going on in your life?'
'One big nonstop party,' Caitlin quipped.
'Caitlin!' Rebecca growled.
'When I figure it out, you'll be the first to know!' Caitlin lied.
'Heaven will fold over first,' Rebecca threw at her friend.
'Thank you for being here Rebecca,' I know you have a million things to do, but I'll make it up to you.'
'I will hold you to it,' Rebecca threatened. 'Yes, as my Maid of Honor, you will slave for me!'
'Merciless, why am I not surprised?' Caitlin groaned.
After dinner, they climbed into Caitlin's bed, even though she had a guest suite. Rebecca was revealing some intimate stories, Caitlin did not want to hear about her own brother.'
'I want to be able to look at him with a straight face again,' Caitlin cut her off.'
Rebecca sighed happily. 'I love him Caitlin. He's so caring, attentive, so excited that he's going to be a dad, my life is perfect,' she purred.
I wish I could say the same. Successful executive, attractive, independent, more money than I know what to do with. What good is all that, when you're alone?
Caitlin awoke the next morning at about seven. She lay in bed for a while her thoughts immediately going to Nicholas. She missed him so much, the adoring man she came to know in the hospital was so amazing. She longed to look into his eyes right now, wrap her fingers around his neck, feel his magical lips, so gentle on hers__. Surely he missed her as much as she missed him! Could he just cut her off that way and go on with his life?
Caitlin was pleased that her clothes still fitted well, she did not want them hanging on her body.
'Best keep to the special diet regime then there will be no problems,' she cautioned herself.
It was a novel idea eating breakfast. She was going to have to get used to it. Generally, she could not wait to finish dressing and leave for the office. Caitlin helped herself to some muesli, yoghurt, and fruit, as she scanned the morning newspaper, she finished it off with some coffee.
'There you go Nicholas that meal was in your honour.'
It was nine o' clock. Breakfast completed, medication taken, she decided to head to the office. Caitlin reached her hand to the key holder, there was no keys there. She checked her handbag, nothing! She rushed to the garage, the car was there all right. She wondered if Nicholas had forgotten to leave the keys. Caitlin tiptoed back to her room, and pulled out the set of spare keys.
Climbing into the car she prayed, 'Please start.'
With one click, it purred into life. 'That's my baby!' she exclaimed excitedly. Caitlin got to the office, observed Katie busy at the computer, earphones clipped to her ears, as she transcribed from the earphones onto her document. Caitlin tiptoed to her, tapping her on the shoulder. Katie jumped up.
'Caitlin, what are you doing here!'
'I work here!' Caitlin supplied humourlessly.
Two junior staff members were walking by confused at Katie, questioning her boss.
'But, you're not supposed to be back till next week!'
'I'm not here for long, just come to say 'Hi.'
Katie stared at Caitlin, 'you look refreshed and so beautiful, Caitlin. The recuperation has done you well. You are positively glowing.'
'And I missed you. Now, don't go getting all soft on me, I prefer it when you're being a slave driver,' Caitlin quipped.
Katie laughed, hugging her boss. 'Welcome back, Caitlin. It's an absolute pleasure working with you, and I wouldn't want any other boss.'
'I should stay away more often,' Caitlin remarked.
'How are you feeling though?'
'Absolutely perfect,' she smiled, 'I feel healthy, physically fit, mentally rejuvenated.'
Emotionally, is not open for discussion. '
'I'm probably going to regret giving this instruction. But can you please ensure, I have a decent breakfast and lunch every day?' she requested.
'I'm sure it's going to be difficult, but I'll try.' Katie laughed.
'I'm not going into my office, I'll just drop by Simon, and then come say goodbye to you on my way out.'
'Okay.' She smiled and got back to her typing.
Caitlin touched her on the shoulder again.
Katie slipped off the headphones.
'Thank you for holding the fort,' Caitlin smiled.
Caitlin walked to Simon's office.
'Caitlin! How are you doing?' Simon's P.A. flung her arms around Caitlin.
'Hi Sandy.'
'You're looking great, as always,' she hugged Caitlin again. 'Welcome back, although, I think it's the first week the boss had earned his salary,' she whispered.
It took much effort for Caitlin not to smile. 'Speaking of the boss, is he busy?' Caitlin enquired.
'Yes, but you can always butt in, you know that.'
Caitlin knocked on Simon's door to get his attention.
'What are you doing here!' he demanded.
Caitlin exchanged a glance with Sandy.
'I still have a job here right?' Caitlin asked.
Simon stood up to give her a hug. 'How are you Kid?'
'Fine, just fine,' Caitlin responded.
'So what's going on?' Caitlin demanded, helping herself to some filter coffee. 'Where's the sugar?' she asked.
'I'm banned from the stuff.'
Caitlin turned around to look at Simon. 'Is there something I should know about your health?' she asked perceptively.
'Have to maintain a steady blood sugar level,' he offered, nothing to be too concerned about, he relayed, as he buzzed Sandy. 'I can give you my GP's number if you like' he replied.
Sandy stood at the door, enquiringly.
'Caitlin needs a tea tray.'
Sandy nodded, bringing a tray with sugar, cream, biscuits and some fruit juices. Caitlin helped herself to the sugar, offered a fruit juice to Simon.
'So fill me in.' Caitlin requested.
'I thought, you're only back next week,' he asked guardedly.
'Simon, as you can see, I'm fine. I do not have a disease, or terminal illness! I am not anorexic, and the doctor has given me a clean bill of health. So I'm back tomorrow,' she informed him defiantly.
He studied her, still not convinced.
She stood up. 'Look at me,' she smiled, 'I'm looking great, I feel great, I look very healthy, don't you agree?'
'I must admit, the five star hotel has done you wonders,' he smiled. 'Okay, but I want you to ease into things Caitlin.
He used my name!
'I don't want to see you here before nine, and I want you out of here before five!'
'Many would kill for a boss like you,' she smiled.
'I'd rather have that, that be accused of being a boss who kills!'
They laughed together.
'I've missed you Kid. Things were kind of lonely here without you!'
'Glad to hear it. So I'll see you at nine tomorrow!'
'I'm glad you follow some instructions!' He threw at her. 'Welcome back Kid,' he hugged her again.
'Thank you,' she smiled.
Caitlin was about to open the door, when it opened and Claudia Barnett walked in.
'Caitlin, dear!' How are you, she hugged Caitlin, her eyes concerned.
'How are you feeling?'
'Hi Claudia,' 'I'm much better, thanks.' Caitlin smiled.
'You work too hard my dear. You're so young, you must take things easier. Bye the way did you get my hug from Simon when he visited you at the hospital.
'What hug?' she winked at Claudia.
'I can see you want me to sleep in the dog box tonight?' Simon scolded Caitlin, kissing his wife on the cheek.
'I think you would deserve it. Bye, you two.' She smiled at Claudia and left them.
It was almost twelve, when Caitlin got back to her penthouse. She wondered if she should call Nicholas, with the excuse for her car keys. Caitlin sighed, wishing she could alter the situation, when Nicholas had walked in on her and Josh. She missed him so much, she just longed to hear his voice, or even better, if only she could have his arms around her.
Perhaps he was deliberately holding onto her keys so she did not drive anywhere. As much as she wanted to call him, she'd rather it be an occasion to chat, than for her to use an excuse she thought as she walked into her penthouse. Rebecca was still touching up.
'Punctual as usual' she greeted Caitlin.
'Pity I can't say the same about you! I hope you're going to make it to your wedding before the grooms marries somebody else in your place.'
Rebecca made to strike at her again.
'Please,' Caitlin begged, 'I can't take this violence. I'm still recovering from last night's assault.'
Rebecca giggled and hugged her friend, 'I love you, you mutt.'
'Same here, kiddo,' Caitlin hugged her affectionately.
'Shall we go?' they walked arm in arm giggling, like teenagers.
It had been a long time since she'd been to the movies. Caitlin was appreciative of the quiet. She was glad, not to make conversation. Rebecca was a horror movie addict, so against her better judgment, Caitlin succumbed to her friend's whim. At least, she could dwell on her own emotions.
She wished she had never set eyes on Nicholas. How had she spent her days before him? She could hardly remember what her life was like before meeting Nicholas. Now all she felt was a longing and an ache in her heart. There was always an expectation that he would pop into view somewhere. In the lift, in Simon's office, perhaps banging on her door, but sadly he never materialized. Caitlin was consumed by her desire to see Nicholas again. She wondered if she should swallow her pride and just admit to him, how she felt about him. He would just scorn at her confession, and make reference to Josh again. Poor Josh, somehow Caitlin suspected that Josh was experiencing the same frustrations, that she was.
Why was love so pleasurable and also so painful?
The movie over, Rebecca was having verbal diarrhea. Caitlin could not recall one scene of the movie. In a way it was good, at least she won't have nightmares tonight. If she was going to lose any sleep, she'd rather have erotic thoughts about Nicholas.
'And that smile?' Rebecca teased.
Caitlin improvised. 'You're like a teenager, I can't imagine that very soon, you're going to be married, I hope your tastes change soon, horror movies are just not the stuff for newlyweds.'
'I don't plan on watching horror movies with my husband!'
Caitlin raised her eyebrows, 'so it's just your loving friend that is subjected to the torture.'
Rebecca tucked her arm into Caitlin's. 'Are you going to be fine? Stuart's coming to fetch me later.'
'How much longer do I have to put up with you?' Caitlin enquired, admiring a little boy chasing his sister around the water fountain and splashing water on her.
'I think he'll be here about five,' Rebecca maneuvered around some ladies with their grocery trolleys.
'Peace and quiet, and my bed to myself, I can't wait,' Caitlin grinned, raising her face skywards, inhaling the fresh air and allowing the sun to drench over her face.
'See if I visit you again,' Rebecca sulked.
'Doesn't help much when you pass out on me.'
'I'm sorry honey, I get so tired.'
'So I noticed,' Caitlin mocked, as she unlocked the car doors.
Caitlin and Rebecca made dinner for Stuart, who had called and demanded Pasta Cabonara. They made a huge salad. Rebecca made enough pasta to feed the entire building.
'I hope you're going to understand measurements in proportion to the number you will feed when you get married,' Caitlin laughed.
'Look at it this way, you won't have to cook for five days,' Rebecca suggested.
'Eat pasta for five days! I'll look more pregnant than you. Perhaps you can take it home and you and Stuart can feed on it for five days.'
'My man is demanding. He will want a fresh meal each day. There is no way he will eat yesterday's leftovers!'
'Spoilt, more like it,' Caitlin threw back.
The doorbell went, and Rebecca dived.
'l'll get it,' Caitlin teased, but standing her ground.
'No, you won't,' Rebecca pointed her finger, then checking herself in the mirror.'
'I suppose, I'll get the wine out,' Caitlin shouted, opening the refrigerator.
'Nick!' Rebecca greeted, 'Good we have enough pasta.'
Caitlin almost dropped the bottle. She did not know whether to take out the bottle or to go and throw her arms around Nicholas or wait for him to take the first step. All she knew was him being here was like oxygen to her lungs. Caitlin carefully put the chilled bottle on the table, allowing her eyes to go to Nicholas' face. His eyes were hooded. He looked tired. Caitlin longed to put her arms around him, trace her fingers over his gorgeous face. He stared into her eyes. Caitlin sighed softly, casting a glance at Rebecca and Stuart. They were in each other's arms, whispering, giggling, kissing. She groaned inwardly, hoping Nicholas could greet her in the same way.
'Hi,' she said to Nicholas, her eyes dejected, shoulders slumped, resigning herself to the fact that he was still angry with her.
'How are you?' he asked politely.
Wonderful now that you're here.
'Fine thank you,' she summoned a polite smile.
'Would you like a glass of wine?' Caitlin asked.
'I'll have a scotch rather,' he turned to help himself them stopped.
Caitlin closed her eyes.
Why was he making this so painful?
'Help yourself,' she urged.
He nodded and poured out two glasses, taking one to Stuart.
'So what have you two been up to?' Nicholas asked Rebecca.
'Caitlin went to the office in the morning,' Rebecca was sitting on Stuart's knees.
Caitlin could feel Nicholas' eyes boring into her back, but she did not want to see those disapproving eyes.
'Seeing, I need my beauty sleep,' Rebecca continued, 'she came back at twelve and we went to the movies.'
'Just the two of you?' Nicholas teased not so innocently.
'Afraid so,' Rebecca nodded, unaware of Nicholas' sarcasm.
Stuart rose, put his arm around Caitlin, 'the convalescence has done you well, Cait, you're looking fresh, and healthy and I dare say glowing,' he smiled, hugging his sister. 'Don't you agree, Nick?'
Caitlin could not resist the opportunity to look into his eyes.
'That she does' he said, his eyes not smiling.
Stuart and Rebecca so besotted with each other did not notice the undercurrent between Nicholas and Caitlin.
Caitlin longed to throw her arms around his neck, and kiss his adorable lips.
Oh God! This is just so painful.
Caitlin clenched her fingers into a fist. She wished she had on something with pockets.
'Would you like something to drink?' he asked, noting she was not having a drink.
Why can't you hug me, damn you!
'No thanks,' she murmured, not bothering to let him know, it was because of her medication.
'Shall I help you set the table?' Nicholas offered loud enough for them to hear, 'Seeing those two, do not even know we are in the room.'
'We heard that!' Stuart remarked, not in the least fazed by Nicholas' comment.
'Yes please.'
Caitlin was prepared to enjoy every opportunity to be near Nicholas. He set out the plates and the wine glasses. Caitlin set down the cutlery. She opened the oven to take Rebecca's pasta out.
Nicholas beat her to it. He'd already put on the oven gloves and was helping her put the tray on the table.
'Thank you,' she said, not looking at him, as she brought out the salads and bread rolls. Caitlin knew Nicholas preferred red wine with his meal. She laid a bottle of red wine to one side of the table, and a bottle of white on the other.
Should she try one more time to redeem herself? She forged ahead before she lost her nerve.
'Nicholas, there is nothing going on between Josh __.'
'Save it!' He hissed harshly, cutting her off. 'It's not by choice that I'm here. Stuart was doing the driving.'
'Please let me explain what you saw,' she begged.
'Should I leave?' His tone was deadly quiet.
'No,' she whispered.
Caitlin was devastated at how merciless he was. She wished he could just be a little reasonable.
'Dinner is ready,' she called to Stuart and Rebecca.
Caitlin turned to get a wine opener and found Nicholas' eyes on her. There was a familiar expression for a moment, but it disappeared just as quickly.
She gave him the wine opener and he opened the bottle of red wine. Caitlin took out a few bottles of chilled water from the refrigerator. Stuart and Rebecca strolled hand in hand to the table. They chose seats next to each other, forcing Nicholas and Caitlin to sit close together.
Nicholas served Caitlin some of the pasta, helped himself to some, and passed it over to Stuart.
'So did you enjoy your movie Caitlin?' Nicholas taunted.
At least it wasn't a total cold war.
'I don't share Rebecca's crazy passion for horror stories, I'm afraid,' she half smiled.
'You were just so chicken in there,' Rebecca teased.
Caitlin would have thought to defend herself, if she'd noted one scene in the entire movie, but since she had not, she just humored Rebecca.
'Next week's the wedding rehearsals you two,' Stuart reminded them. 'So you better make plans to be there on time.'
Caitlin's eyes look across at Nicholas. He held her gaze momentarily then focused on his meal.
'It's your future wife that needs lessons in punctuality,' Caitlin mocked.
Rebecca turned on Caitlin, with eyes narrowed.
'Please don't get violent!' Caitlin pleaded, 'I've had enough abuse from you.'
She caught a smirk playing across Nicholas' lips.
Oh, you look so gorgeous, my darling.
A painful groan escaped before she realized that everybody else heard her. Caitlin blushed profusely.
'You okay sis?'
She merely nodded, not looking up. A shrill from the telephone, had Caitlin's eyes arrested to Nicholas.
Oh God, please don't let it be Josh PLEASE!
Nicholas' eyes went dark with anger and instantly his face was a mask. She let it ring, contemplating not answering. Nicholas glared at her, challenging her to pick it up.
'Excuse me,' she said to nobody in particular, and escaped to answer it.
'Caitlin Sinclair, good evening!'
'Caitlin, honey how are you feeling?'
'Dad!' she sighed her relief. 'I'm doing great,' she smiled, she wanted to tap dance she was so pleased that it was not Josh calling.
'Honey, I hope you're taking things easy, and not putting any strain on yourself!'
'I am taking things easy Dad,' she reassured him.
'Say, I'm looking for Stuart, he said he would be seeing you tonight.'
'You're in luck Dad, he's right here.'
'Wonderful. May I have a word with him. Thanks honey, and good night.'
'Just a second for him Dad, good night and give my love to mom.'
On her way back to the table, she could hear their laughter and gaiety. Nicholas avoided looking in her direction as she returned.
'Stuart, dad's on the phone, he'd like a word with you.'
'Excuse me,' he said to Nicholas, kissing Rebecca on the head, 'back in a moment.'
Caitlin took her seat. She reached for the bottle of water, as Nicholas reached out at the same time to fill her glass. Their hands clashed on the bottle. Heat rushed through Caitlin's body, she choked on her saliva, snapping her hand away as if it was scorched by fire. Her eyes met Nicholas'. She could see that confusing look again. She lowered her head, toying with her food. Her stomach had just as much enthusiasm for the food as Nicholas showed in her direction.
He poured the water into her glass. Caitlin made a concerted effort to finish her meal. It took some time, but she succeeded. Nicholas did not go out of his way to talk to Caitlin instead he drew Rebecca into conversation, and chatted away to Stuart. Caitlin did not risk talking to him, in case he would snub her. After dinner she served coffee in the living room.
When she walked in with the tray Stuart and Nicholas were staring at The Tempest, above the fireplace, Nicholas with an amused expression on his face.
'So what's this picture about, Caitlin?' Stuart asked his sister curiously.
Caitlin felt the colour rising to her face. One look at Nicholas, told her he was enjoying this moment. She put the tray down, handing Nicholas a mug of coffee, then one to Stuart.
'I was told by the artist, the answer lies in the eyes of the one who views it,' she challenged her brother, to the disappointment of Nicholas.
'Well, I can't make head or tail of it! Looks like two figures, in a storm!' He shrugged. Nicholas threw his head back and laughed.
It was so wonderful to hear his laughter.
'Hey buster, I did not read art okay!' Stuart replied defensively.
'Perhaps one day, Caitlin will reveal what her eyes view there.'
The temperature was rising in the living room.
'Perhaps,' she responded non committedly.
Finishing his coffee, Nicholas asked to be excused.
No, she looked at him pleadingly, not so soon!
He saw the disappointment in her eyes. Ignoring her silent plea, he looked away quickly. Stuart and Rebecca wanted to take their leave as well.
'Cait, Nick will be coming through next Friday, perhaps you should come with him. It will save you the hassle of taking a commercial flight.'
Caitlin glanced at Nicholas. He nodded as if not really interested whether she did or not. Caitlin agreed just to avoid getting into a debate or argument.
'You will be leaving in the afternoon?' she enquired.
'Just after lunch,' he provided.
That was all she needed to know. She would not be going with Nicholas. She would take the day off and leave on the Thursday night. She did not have a problem flying commercial. Rather be at peace on a commercial flight than put up with his condescending eyes and the silent war between them. What was the point of going with him? To save a bit of money? The cost of a ticket was certainly not going to break her bank. She would call him when she landed at Kenton, and tell him not to worry about picking her up. He would certainly be pleased if she made her own arrangements by the look on his face.
The next week Caitlin uneventfully got back into her routine at work. On Wednesday afternoon, she called Katie into her office.
'I need you to book me on a flight to Port Elizabeth tomorrow evening, but don't breathe a word to anyone. Not even Simon. Just don't set up appointments for me on Friday if possible, but if things get complicated, set up tentative appointments and either late on Thursday or early Friday reschedule them for the next week.
'Got it.' Katie replied, not getting it at all.
Not surprisingly, Caitlin had not heard from Nicholas the entire week. But by late afternoon on Thursday, he called to say he was running late and would collect her at four the next afternoon. She had thanked him, and cut the call, before her emotions got the better of her.
At six o' clock, Caitlin left the office. She thanked Katie for being discreet. Overnight bag already in her boot, she headed straight to the airport. Her flight was at eight in the evening. Nobody, except Katie knew of her plans. She new Katie was trustworthy. Her loyalty was above reproach.
Caitlin's first order of business was to call Simon. Caitlin was vague, just informing him that she wanted to visit her parents and won't be in on the Friday.
She called Nicholas on his mobile. Informed him she did not want to wait and that she would take an earlier flight. He was silent for a little too long, then acknowledged what she said and cut the call.
'How about at least trying to be civil,' she yelled after he put the receiver down.
Some curious onlookers observed the irony of her tantrum. Caitlin then called Katie.
'I've landed safely in P.E.' she informed her. 'Any drama?'
'None Katie grinned. 'I got a call from Simon, informing me to reschedule anything in your diary. I said I will, only there is nothing actually planned.'
'Clever girl and thank you Katie, 'so what can I bring you back from P.E.?' Caitlin asked.
'How about a dark handsome hunk, on a one way ticket?'
'Tall order, I'll try,' Caitlin smiled. She walked to the car rental agent. They seem to have a good memory. The attendant addressed her by name. He took a copy of her driver's license, and asked, 'same as usual Ms Sinclair?'
'Yes please,' Caitlin smiled politely.
She climbed into the familiar SUV and felt pleased to drive to her parents. At the door, she remembered to tread carefully. She would not want a repetition, of how she met Nicholas. She tapped the door slightly then walked in.
'Caitlin!' Her mom squealed her delight. 'Darling, you've come early, how wonderful!'
'Hi mom, 'she smiled throwing her arms around her mom.
'Wow, honey, you look terrific!' Her mom complimented her.
'I feel great mom. You'll be pleased to know, I'm eating well, three meals a day, and I feel absolutely great.'
'How's my favourite girl in the world?' Her father came to the rescue.
'Hi Dad,' she smiled, hugging him.
'Would you like some dinner, honey, although we've eaten already?'
'Yes, thank you, we can chat, whilst I nibble on something.'
Her mom brought her a tray of smoked salmon, grilled turkey cutlets, freshly prepared vegetable and a green salad.
Caitlin chatted as she tucked into her dinner, 'mmm this is wonderful, thanks mom.'
The next afternoon Caitlin was relaxing in the family room, in her mom's company. Sitting comfortable, with her feet on her mom's lap, engrossed in a novel she was reading, while her mom paged through her latest gardening magazine. The front door opened, and who should walk in but his Lord and Majesty. He looked annoyed, briefcase and jacket in one hand as he opened the door.
Caitlin's eyes widened. She stared, unable to look away. Instinctively, her first thought was to get up, throw her arms around him and kiss him.
Bridle your passions. Remember he did not want you to join him on his plane.
He said he would be late, and yet here he is now?
Caitlin had not been expecting him for another two hours. He was making a habit of making unannounced entrances, earlier than anticipated.
'Nick, hi dear,' her mom greeted with a smile, while Caitlin tried to curb her hormones. Nicholas greeted her mom, planting a kiss on her cheek.
'Caitlin may I have a word with you,' he looked her directly in the eye.
Good afternoon Darling. How was your day? Mine was wonderful, thank you for asking!
Caitlin taking her time, made to remove her feet from her mom's lap, slipping on her sandals. She could tell from her mom's eyes, her creative imagination was running into overdrive.
'Excuse me Mom,' she said.
Nicholas pointed to her father's study, wanting her to precede him. She opened the door and went in. He shut the door behind him.
Caitlin stood with her fingers crossed behind her back, nervous as if she was still a learner in the principal's office. She bit on her lower lip nervously, then lowered her head. Seeming in no great hurry he threw his briefcase and jacket on the table helped himself to a scotch, emptied it, in one gulp and came to stand near Caitlin.
She leaned against the door, her hands uncrossing then crossing again behind her. She wondered if it was business he wanted her for, for he certainly was not interested in pleasure, if his attitude recently was anything to go by. Yet he stood like an angry lion waiting to pounce on its prey, so it can't be business.
Caitlin became irritated, she sighed.
On second thoughts let's change pleasure to torture!
'What is it Nicholas! she questioned, 'You walk in here like Lord of the Manor, summon me to my Dad's study, and now you stand here just staring!'
Her heart was racing. She could see a battle waging in his eyes. She longed to envelop him in her arms, but his sure rejection would break her heart. She looked at her wristwatch, wanting to provoke him.
'Going somewhere? Have a hot date lined up, perhaps?'
'What do you want from me Nicholas?' She demanded, moving away from the door and his penetrating eyes.
She poured herself a glass of water, giving her something to do. He came and stood in front of her.
'Tell me why you did not want to travel with me?' he demanded.
She raised her eyebrows at him, 'Is this why you summoned me here?'
'I want to know who you have plans with?' His tone was deadly quite, as his fingers dug into her.
She pushed at him, releasing his painful grasp. Glaring at him, she nursed her sore arm, 'I have not made plans with anybody.
She'd better be convincing that his was the only body on her 'to do' list.
There is nobody,' she emphasized.
His eyes narrowed suspiciously.
'What do you bloody care anyway! It did not look like you were falling over yourself to have me accompany you here.'
His eyes were thunderous, 'did I not call you and inform you that I would pick you up?' he reminded her.
Okay he did. But his body language told her differently.
'I wanted to spend the day with mom and dad. And seeing you only wanted to leave much later, I__I decided to come earlier.'
He was really not buying anything she was selling him. And he was starting to irritate her.
'Besides, recently you've been like an annoying bear with a bloody sore head, so I had no desire to travel with you while you're sulking.'
'May I remind you who is responsible for my behaviour?' His tone was accusing.
'You refused to offer me any opportunity to explain to you Nicholas! Nothing was __is going on between Josh and I. You jumped to the wrong conclusions. I have tried so many times to tell you, Josh and I are over. You don"t listen to what I say to you!'
This was torture.
She could not go on.
His eyes were unbelieving. 'Really!' He mocked. 'The both of you looked pretty serious and intimate when I walked in. May I also remind you of your previous words, I quote:
"I happen to like Josh very much ... and I hate you!" Unquote.
She looked into his eyes, pain and torture reflected in his eyes.
Why do I have such a big mouth? No wonder he stormed out of the hospital.
'Nicholas, ' she sighed heavily. 'That day __ in the hospital, Josh did ask if we could resume our __ the relationship. I said no!' she added quickly, licking her bone dry lips, which Nicholas followed with interest, his eyes darkening.
'He held my hand,' Caitlin persevered determinedly, 'and asked, if I would not take some time to reconsider, and that's when you walked in. I had already said no, and I was not going to change my mind.'
Caitlin silently prayed she was convincing enough to repair the damage.
'So what should I believe? You said you liked Josh! Were you lying then? How do I know you're not lying now?'
I liked Josh yes. I love you!
Caitlin covered her face with her hands.
Oh God, I need your help here.
'I want an answer Caitlin,' he demanded.
She dropped her hands down, her eyes begging for mercy, but not getting any.
'Nicholas,' she whispered, 'I __,' her hand reached for his arm.
He glared at her hand on his arm, and she drew it away as if his eyes burnt her.
'You what?' He baited.
'Nicholas, I ___, I___.'
She could not endure anymore. Caitlin opened the door and stormed out, running to her room. She locked the door and leaned against it.
'I love you Nicholas,' she whispered to herself, 'that's what I wanted to tell you.'
Caitlin flung herself on her bed and cried her heart out. Now she understood, what people meant, when they said:
''Don't say things you may later regret."
She foolishly told Nicholas, she hated him, when she loved him. She told him she liked Josh, when all she did was go out with Josh to punish him. So how could he believe her now? She fell asleep, sobbing her heart out. It was some hours later when she stirred, feeling rather cold. Caitlin opened her eyes and saw it was evening. One eye on the clock told her it was almost seven. Well for once, she was going to be late for dinner, and she did not care. She buzzed her mom in the kitchen.
'Hey mom, I was laying on the bed and fell asleep, I'll be down in half an hour, okay?'
'Okay darling, take your time.' Her mom's tone was too sympathetic. Did she suspect something?
Caitlin opened the balcony. The hot air rushed over her. She felt emotionally bruised and spent. Nicholas did not only need to deal with his own emotions, and his phobia to commit himself to her. He now had to analyze when she spoke the truth and when she did not. In the beginning he questioned her integrity about her business ethics. Now she had given him ammunition on a silver platter to doubt her honesty.
She ripped off her clothes and climbed into the shower, allowing the hot steaming water to scald over her body. Her eyes were swollen and red, she needed to fix that. She washed her hair making it smell beautiful with the scents of the herbal conditioner. Caitlin wanted to dress making a statement tonight.
Tonight she was dressing up for Nicholas. She draped an attractive red satin cocktail dress, that clung to the curves of her hourglass figure, the cleavage area covered in lace. It was sexy and drew attention to the cleavage, the lace sparse enough to show sufficient advantage of the cleavage. The satin dress was body hugging, with lace underlay, ending way above the knee, emphasizing her well toned, shapely legs. She sprayed on her signature scent behind her ears and her wrists. It gave off an alluring scent. She added black stilettos to complete the outfit. The piping hot shower mended her eyes and her face seemed to have revitalized in the shower, she did not need much make up. Just a little mascara, a touch of lip gloss and she was a show stopper.
Tonight she did look like a youth, but misguided she was definitely not. She did not look a day over twenty-one. Her youthful looks, beautiful healthy glowing skin, lent favorably to her appearance. Her piercing eyes dazzled more blue tonight, excitedly in anticipation of the evening ahead. Walking down the stairs, she could hear the living room abuzz with laughter and celebration. Her family did not seem to need much reason to celebrate. It was only a dress rehearsal, and there was this much celebration. What will the eve of the wedding be like? She smiled to herself. There were many familiar heads and smiling faces, but the first face her eyes made contact with, was Nicholas.
Her breath locked in her lungs, admiring how gorgeously attractive he looked. Tonight, he did not have on a bowtie, but a slim and fashionable evening tie that complimented his designer suit rather attractively.
If only you belonged to me. All I want is to throw my arms around you.
He was talking to somebody, and when his eyes caught hers, he stopped in mid sentence. She saw his eyes darken, become misty, that familiar look, as when they were caught in their many passionate embraces.
She smiled shyly. He caught his breath, raising his glass in salute. Caitlin only partly acknowledged the presence of Stuart, Rebecca, Michael, and others but could not remember all their names right this minute. The young man next to Nicholas, sensing her graceful descent down the stairs, was arrested by her appearance. When she reached the last stair he held out his hand to her.
'Beautiful Princess, where art thou been all my life?' he serenaded dramatically, with his hand over his heart.
Caitlin cast a wary eye in Nicholas' direction, wondering if she was going to be held responsible for the young man's flirting. She was comforted by his eyes reflecting total amusement.
'Good evening,' Nicholas smiled warmly.
Her knees were indulging in some physical exercise.
'Hi,' she responded.
'You look beautiful,' he complimented, his eyes caressing her, like smooth velvet.
'Thank you,' her heart was singing joyfully.
'Caitlin, meet Robert, Robert, Caitlin.'
Caitlin extended her hand, 'how do you do?' she smiled politely at Robert. He was dashingly good looking and reminded her of pictures she'd seen of the very young James Dean. He had the makings of one belonging to a brat pack, cocky, self confident, and a charmer.
'Robert is an apprentice with one of Stuart's site managers,' Nicholas filled Caitlin in.
A waiter walked by with a tray of drinks and cocktails.
'You done with the medication?' Nicholas looked down into her eyes, his arm casually at her lower back. Caitlin swallowed sharply, she felt like some mechanical apparatus had set her in slow motion, only she was standing still rooted to the same spot. She knew she was supposed to respond to Nicholas' question, but when she gazed into his eyes, she was lost in the depths of desire, and too overwhelmed to voice any words. As she gazed back into his eyes, gently he drew her closer to him.
'Not yet,' she responded, her brain finally responded, even as her heart beat recklessly, seemed to test its speed and endurance, as his arm tightened around her. She wished she was bold enough to hold him the same way. But it was just wonderful to be in his arms.
Nicholas reached out for a fruit drink.
'Thank you,' she accepted.
'Do you think she's seeing somebody?' Robert broke the spell, enquiring as if she was not there. Caitlin coughed into her glass. Nicholas taking the glass from her tapped her gently on the back.
'Discretion is the better part of valor, you know!' she advised him.
'So you're not old enough to drink alcohol,' he continued unfazed.
'So presumptuous!' Caitlin complained.
'How old do you think she is Nick?'
'Oh, I have it on good authority, she is over twenty one,' Nicholas grinned.
'While we're on the subject, how old are you Robert?' Caitlin could not resist.
'I'll be nineteen in four months__'
'Lord have mercy!' Caitlin raised her eyebrows.
'What am I going to do Nick, she's captured my heart?'
'I'm sure yours is not the first one,' Nicholas quipped, his eyes capturing hers, as he emptied his glass, helping himself to another.
Was he talking about himself, Josh, Tommy or men in general?
'So are you seeing somebody Caitlin?' Robert persisted.
Caitlin's eyes again sought Nicholas. He seemed to also be interested in the answer. Reluctantly she moved out of Nicholas' arms.
'Right now I'm considering two options,' she declared, to Nicholas' raised eyebrows.
'Either I'm going to reconsider my sexual orientation, or become a nun because men cannot tell you what they want,' she hinted. 'Although Robert, I must say you do not fall strictly in that category, because you seem to have no trouble articulating yourself,' Caitlin threw in, avoiding Nicholas' eyes, who was not buying anyway, instead he gulped down the contents of his glass.
She raised her eyes at Nicholas.
Either he's very thirsty...
'Why, thank you,' Robert bowed, forcing Caitlin's attention back to himself.
'So what do you do Caitlin. Are you a model?' he asked.
'Do you have a job offer for me?' Caitlin was intrigued.
'Not as a model, but I could arrange a job at Stuart or Nick's company,' he offered.
Caitlin glanced at Nicholas, who just folded his arms across his chest in amusement.
'You have that kind of influence?' Caitlin enquired.
'Sure. I've organized jobs for three of my mates on site, isn't that true Nick?
'Yes, he tells the truth, though their qualifications fitted the job spec,' Nicholas clarified.
'So what would I do, seeing Nicholas and Stuart don't have desk bound jobs, and I'm afraid I don't have the criteria to be placed on site?'
'They have a typing pool, you could work there,' he proposed.
'You have great faith in my typing ability.'
'Pretty lady like you, I'm sure you can type!'
Nicholas was losing interest in this charade, 'Robert may I introduce you properly to the lady.'
Robert looked confused.
'Robert Channing meet Caitlin Sinclair.'
His face closely reflected the colour of Caitlin's dress. He swallowed, opened his mouth, but for perhaps the first time in his teenage life he was dumbstruck.
"'Sinclair?' " He finally mouthed the words.
'Hey sis,' Stuart planted a kiss on his sister's cheek, as if on cue. 'I see you've met the site mascot.
'He's just offered me a job,' Caitlin filled Stuart in.
'She's already a Member of the Board, what job are you offering my sister?' Stuart raised his eyebrows.
'M __member of the Board, I think I need a drink,' Robert groaned walking away.
Nicholas and Stuart laughed at poor Robert. They will never let him live this one down.
'Excuse me,' Caitlin said to Nicholas and Stuart. She went in search of Rebecca. She met her mom along the way.
'Honey you feeling better?' her mom smiled guardedly.
'Yes the rest did me well, I feel much better after the shower.'
And especially as someone is smiling tonight
'Are you avoiding me?' a voice demanded behind her.
'Rebecca honey, I just left the guys in search of you,' she hugged her friend.
'I was just introduced to Robert,' Caitlin smiled.
'Verbal Diahorrea Robert?'
'I think that's the one.'
'So what was your impression?'
'I would say there is less risk of a dull moment in his presence,' Caitlin supplied.
'Okay enough of that, are you ready for tomorrow?' Rebecca asked.
Caitlin laughed. 'You are the bride to be, it's your rehearsal.'
'Oh, I'm getting nervous Cait,' Rebecca grabbed a glass from a passing waiter, and finished the contents in one gulp.
'Listen Miss Pregnant Fairy, you should go easy on the alcohol!'
'Okay, I'll stop, although it's only my second glass, since becoming pregnant.'
'Good stick to water, it's safer.'
'You're such a goody too shoes!' Rebecca complained.
Caitlin grinned, walking away, she mingled around, interfered with Michael, teased some of the friends she had not seen in a long time, and was starting to have fun, until a voice asked, 'So where's Bradford?'
I swear he's like a walking time bomb!
'And you're not curious as to why Josh is not here?' she could not resist.
His eyes narrowed angrily, as he took a swig from his umpteenth glass.
'I'm keeping a low profile, so you do not have material for fodder!' She threw at him.
'I have not seen Tommy or had the opportunity to take any man to bed since I've been here. Satisfied?'
He just raised his glass to his lips again.
'I also think you've had too much to drink,' she warned, taking his glass from him and placing it on the tray of a passing waiter.
He complained noisily, as the dinner gong sounded. 'Saved by the bell,' he slurred.
Caitlin shook her head in confusion and walked away. He was fine when she came down. What has happened? And she'd not given him any reason to drown himself in alcohol. Fortunately there was a more than loud buzz around the table saving Caitlin from any attention to her anxious emotional state.
She did think about Tommy now. It was the first time in a long time that Caitlin came home, and did not call Tommy. She felt guilty, but she needed to keep things at a low.
As obnoxious as he could be, she loved Nicholas. She saw the beautiful, tender hearted side of him when she was hospitalized, that just cemented the love she felt for him, until that fatal moment when he walked in on her and Josh. She wanted to steal a glance at him now, but when she looked in his direction, he was already gazing at her. Caitlin wanted to look away, but his eyes held her mesmerized. She was glad he was not here with any of his Ice Princesses, Caitlin would have been sick with envy. Robert sitting next to her touched her arm drawing her attention away from Nicholas.
'You haven't told me, what line of work you're in,' he reminded her.
'Suppose I tell you, I do a lot of wheeling and dealing in boardrooms, would that give you a hint?' she smiled.
'No! Beauty, brains, boardrooms,' he said gob smacked. 'Is there no end to your hidden talents, Miss Sinclair?' he questioned.
'Heard the expression, 'Don't judge a book by its cover!' she asked him.
'I have had a rude awaking today, Miss Sinclair.'
'What's with all the formality, she wrinkled her nose, 'Call me Caitlin.'
'But you're the boss's sister!'
'Stuart's your boss, and you address him by his first name.'
'It's kind of inappropriate being formal on site.'
The first course was served, Caitlin chatted to those on the other side of her, and to those near enough for her to converse with. Occasionally she glanced at Nicholas he did not seem to be engaging much in conversation with those around him, but was constantly nursing a glass in his hand. He still managed to look dangerously handsome she thought, admiring him. She loved it when he had the beginnings of stubble, it was so erotic to look at. Caitlin breathed deeply, frustrated with the way things were between them.
Rebecca seemed to have recovered from her earlier nervousness she was a livewire at their corner of the table, she had everybody attentive and laughing. Her eyes were drawn back to Nicholas. There was a young attractive lady next to Nicholas, trying to chat him up. She was constantly trailing her fingers over his arm. Nicholas was jostling his attention between his scotch and the demands of the little vixen, and the former seemed to enjoy more attention. A pang of envy overcame Caitlin, as she observed the flirting. On his other side, Nicholas was flanked by Michael.
Caitlin stood up and instantly, Nicholas' eyes followed her as she made her way towards his direction. Caitlin went to Michael, and demanded he swap places with her. Michael was confused, but obliged anyway. Nicholas stared into Caitlin's eyes. He seemed to be fighting some demons.
'Have you come to torment me?' His speech was slurred.
The vixen on the other side of Nicholas was giving Caitlin the dagger looks.
'Nicholas, you've had too much to drink,' she pleaded.
'Are you going to deny me my only source of pleasure these days?' he slurred further. Caitlin placed her hand unobtrusively on his arm, she felt the rippling muscles go taut.
'Can you stop with the alcohol, please?' she begged.
'What do you care?' His angry eyes glared.
'I care, damn you Nicholas!'
'You hate me,' he reminded her. His eyes filled with anger and pain simultaneously.
Her heart went out to him. Caitlin had really caused havoc with him emotionally. His eyes constantly seemed to relay her message that she hated him. Caitlin leaned over and whispered in his ear, 'Nicholas can we call a truce please?'
He stared into her eyes, his face not offering any indication of his thoughts. Caitlin waited patiently.
'Will you be with me tonight?' he demanded.
'Yes,' she whispered, without hesitation.
She loved him too much to let him continue on the alcohol poisoning adventure, he chose to indulge in. Nicholas seemed to have made a decision about the demons he was dealing with, his hand reached down to cover hers. He looked into her eyes. They were full of desire, longing and need for her.
'Come with me Nicholas,' she urged, standing up. He stood up, following her. The green eyed monster next to Nicholas glared at Caitlin. They stopped by the room he was meant to sleep in.
'Pick up your luggage,' she spoke softly.
It was a bit of a battle getting Nicholas to her door. She smiled inwardly, for he wobbled all the way there, eventually they were in. Caitlin locked her door. She filled the percolator. While she waited, she took Nicholas' jacket and tie off. She was loosening his shirt buttons, when his hands went around her waist, his mouth claiming hers. Caitlin smelt the whiskey on his breath, but his tongue was sensuous and sweet, as she responded to him, hungry for his kisses as he was for hers.
'Caitlin,' he groaned, his mouth bruising, punishing, demanding.
She did not care, as long as they were together. Caitlin undid his buttons but did not remove the shirt, he watched her, his eyes ablaze with desire. Her fingers unable to resist reached out, touching the fine hairs across his chest. Nicholas closed his eyes, and groaned loudly.
'Caitlin, I know you hate me,' he drew out slowly, 'but just this once, I need to have you,' he pleaded.
Caitlin groaned softly, cupping his face, 'I don't hate you Nicholas. We would not be here together now, if I did.'
'Caitlin, you torture me day and night,' his lips were stirring her desire and the junction of her cleavage, 'I go to bed thinking about you, I lay awake at night wanting you.__' His tongue was continuing that same torture.
'Nicholas, you're drunk, I'd rather you not speak right now.'
'I want you my darling,' he groaned, his hardened form pressing against her, his mouth forcing hers open.
Mmm drunk or sober, the endearment was still appealing!
Certain parts of his anatomy were not hampered by the effects of his inebriation. She tried to pull away, but his hungry mouth would not let go. Caitlin gave up resisting, and slipped her hands around his neck, responding to his kiss. His tongue was sending sensations of pleasure throughout her body. He moulded her body against his, she could feel the strength of his taut thighs. He had her imprisoned in his arms, his eyes staring down into hers. Caitlin leaned into him comfortably. She loved him so much, she longed to tell him, but not tonight, he was drunk.
'I want you too, Nicholas.'
His eyes came alive. There was light in them again. His mouth closed over hers, his tongue wrapped around hers, an explosive sensation exchanging between them. 'Nicholas,' she stopped him, gasping for breath.
He looked into her eyes questioningly.
'I want you to spend the night with me Nicholas, but I am not offering you my body, not tonight.'
He looked dejected, her words like a damp cloth on his desire.
The pad of her fingers caressed his cheek, 'When we make love, you're going to have to be sober.'
That seemed to have sobered him up somewhat. She reached up and brushed her lips to his.
'Would you like me to have some dinner brought up?'
'No,' he replied, his lips reaching for hers.
'I think you need some coffee,' she escaped his arms.
'Feeling a bit better?' she asked, after she forced some coffee into his stomach.
'Yes,' he said reaching for her again. 'What are you going to tell the others tomorrow, when they realize we've spent the night together?'
'Like you said earlier, I'm over twenty one,' she responded, snuggling into his embrace.
'Thank you for trusting me,' he whispered.
'We've done this before in the penthouse,' she reminded him, running her fingers into his hair.
'I want to sleep in your arms, and wake up with you next to me,' she whispered.
His lips reached for hers.
'Do you need to be anywhere before the rehearsals,' she asked him.
'Rehe__arsals! he slurred.
'Oh boy, we're going to have one nasty hangover tomorrow, we can't even speak a sentence lucidly!'
She grinned opening his case and handing him the toiletry case, 'there are towels in there,' she sent him into the bathroom. 'Can you manage the shower Nicholas without passing out?'
'No.' He fished, meekly going to the shower.
'You're drunk, but not too drunk for that!' She shook her head. Caitlin sighed deeply and lowered herself down on the settee. She did not know what tomorrow would bring, but at least tonight they were together. She longed to just be with him and to talk about sweet nothings, and just be in his arms. She would have preferred it though, if he had his faculties about him.
Nicholas came out with a towel around his waist.
'Er__I hope you're decent under the towel,' she mocked.
He grinned, made a show of checking.
'Nicholas!' She dived away from him.
'I'm decent,' he removed the towel to display a pair of sexy black boxers.
She walked towards him cautiously, and wrapped her arms around his waist, leaning her cheek against his chest warm from the shower. He smelt clean and fresh, she was loving the smell of his cologne. He held her in his arms, his mouth found hers, he tasted of toothpaste. She hugged him tightly, overjoyed to be in his embrace.
'I'm going to shower,' she said, 'will you be okay?' She handed him another cup of coffee.
He nodded, though he looked ready to pass out.
'Please drink the coffee, you'll feel a little better,' she teased, as she left him to shower. She had showered before dinner, so she did not spend too long in the shower, then quickly brushed her teeth. Thankfully, her dressing closet was in the bathroom, she pulled out a black satin sleep shirt, with a pair of matching shorts, and came out to join Nicholas. Her heart sank, he was asleep on her bed, coffee untouched. She opened a bottle of water to drink from, hung his jacket and tie in the closet, and threw the remaining clothes into the laundry basket. She put all the cups into the little sink. Caitlin covered him with the duvet, and slipped in beside him. Nicholas had only his shorts on, she snuggled up next to him, her one arm around his neck. She tucked her one leg in between his, feeling intoxicated just by being with Nicholas, if only he was not drunk. She placed her lips softly on his.
'Good night,' she whispered. 'I love you Nicholas.' but there was no reaction, just his feint rhythmic breathing. She could not even count the number of scotches he'd consumed.
Caitlin smiled, shuddering at what the reaction of Rebecca would ensue, if word got to her. Caitlin was aware her mother suspected some under tones between her and Nicholas, there was a knowing look in her eyes, when Nicholas summoned her to her dad's study.
Eventually in the early hours Caitlin drifted off to sleep, she tried to shift her position, but Nicholas even in his inebriated state held her so tightly. She managed to change her position with her back to him, whilst he still held her, then she was able to sleep.
The birds in orchestra outside signaled the break of day. The rising sun was slightly visible through the curtain, when Caitlin stirred from her sleep. She shifted to study the man whose limbs enveloped her body. His leg and his arms holding her in a firm vice grip as if he expected her to flee at a moment's notice. Very carefully she extracted her body from his grip. She longed to stay in his arms till he awoke, but she felt apprehensive about the frame of mind Nicholas would be in when he opened his eyes, and she'd rather be anywhere but in bed with him. She longed to reach over and kiss his lips, but that would be too much of a risk if he awoke. Nicholas shifted onto his back, his one hand casually on his chest, the other on the side of his head. He was still very fast asleep, judging from his soft breathing.
She showered, throwing on a pair of jeans and a sweater. She poured fresh coffee into the percolator, rinsed the cups from last night. She was sipping from her coffee when she heard Nicholas stirring, saw his hand reach to the bedside table. Automatically she reached out to pour him some coffee. Realizing his watch was still on his hand, he lifted his body up.
'Good morning,' she greeted cautiously, wondering if 'good' was appropriate. She handed him the coffee, trying to read his eyes. His eyes were trying to establish the same, only there seem to be a look of dread in his eyes as he asked,
'What am I doing here?'
As much as she prepared for the eventuality, it still knocked her for a six. Caitlin's heart sank. Slowly she slid on the settee. Nicholas just stared at her, after he emptied the coffee cup.
'Why am I sleeping in your bed, Caitlin?' He questioned again.
She wanted to cry.
All he spoke last night, was that the alcohol talking?
She admitted to herself the possibility of that risk? Caitlin lowered her head, pondering on how to offer an appropriate response.
'Excuse me a minute,' he said, walking into the bathroom, though leaving the door open. He came back with a towel around his neck, his face washed, tooth paste on his breath. Did he have to stand in front of her practically naked, oozing sex appeal? All he had on was the pair of boxers from last night.
'What happened last night?' he asked, his eyes registering regret and anguish.
'Did we___?' He closed his eyes hating the thought that he had no answers.
'What do you remember?' she asked, rising to her feet.
He walked to the coffee machine, and helped himself. God, she wished he'd throw on some clothes.
'I remember sitting at the table, I can't remember having a meal, beyond that I don't recall a thing.'
'Is that all you remember nothing after that?' she questioned.
'No.' He was embarrassed.
'Caitlin did we __?' He could not even bring himself to ask if they had made love. 'Caitlin this is killing me, explain to me what happened please,' he pleaded.
Dejectedly she replied, 'You were rather drunk at the table, I came to you, asked you to come with me, we fetched your bag from your room.'
His eyes made contact with his overnight case, in the corner.
'Do you remember anything now?' she asked.
'No.' he said looking ashamed. He ran his fingers through his hair, looking haggard as if he just received a death sentence.
'Nicholas go and shower, I will meet you downstairs for breakfast.'
'What are you going to say to your family about us spending the night together?'
She repeated the response she gave him last night. 'Like you said previously, I'm over twenty one.'
No recognition of it flashed in his eyes.
'Caitlin, I need to know, did we make love?' he questioned.
Caitlin looked away, then walked out of her bedroom without answering him.
Why does he look as if he would regret, if they had made love? Was he disgusted with himself, that he may have lost his self respect? With all the trust issues he had about her, did he not want to find himself in a compromised position?
Caitlin poured herself a glass of orange juice, and went to sit in the living room. Did he often drink himself into a stupor, and go to bed with women, who indulged in casual flings like he preferred? Caitlin wanted hurl from the pain she felt. Why was he so defensive as if going to bed with her was the most undesirable thought to his sober mind? She wished she could find a corner and slump down and give vent to the threatening tears.
What a mess, Oh God, what a mess!
'How long have you been in love with him?' her mother's soft voice asked standing next to Caitlin.
She looked up into her mother's eyes. They were filled with love and tenderness. Caitlin guessed a mother's intuition was not to be discarded lightly.
'Is it that obvious mom?' she asked, tears filling her eyes.
Her mom sat down next to her. Caitlin flung her arms around her mom, and sobbed her heart away.
'It's okay darling, just get it out. I love you sweetheart.'
Her mom comforted her, handing her some tissue.
'How did you know mom?' Caitlin continued to sob.
'In the hospital I saw a glimpse, then yesterday when Nick called you to the study __.'
'You mean when he summoned me?' she mumbled.
Her mom smiled, 'Yes honey, you so meekly, and uncharacteristically just submitted,' I was convinced then, when you did not put up a fight. But what's the problem honey? He cares deeply for you, it was obvious when you were in the hospital.'
'Oh mom, things are complicated. He does not trust me.'
'You can work them out honey, just talk to him.'
'I tried yesterday in Dad's study,' she cried again, 'he does not believe me.'
'Sometimes in life, there are things worth fighting for Caitlin. Nicholas is one of them.' She shook her head helplessly.
'I don't know how to mom,' she whispered.
'When the time is right, you will know exactly what to do,' her mom smiled encouragingly.
Caitlin covered her face with her hands, totally disconsolated.
'Sweetheart how about you go freshen up and come to the breakfast table, your dad is there already.'
'Does dad know?' she questioned.
'No, so I want you to put on a brave face at the table.'
'Okay.' she submitted weakly.
Caitlin washed up, splashing cold water over her face. Well it looked reasonable, like she partied too much last night.
She kissed her father on the cheek.
'Hey you left early last night.' Her dad returned the kiss.
'Sign of the times. I'm getting old for this lifestyle,' she summoned a smile for her dad.
'So where was Tommy this weekend, I haven't seen him?' her father enquired.
Caitlin took a huge breath, glad Nicholas was not there to hear that.
'I haven't had a chance to chat to him.' She hoped it would suffice.
