Chapter 8

Jessica tapped her foot as she waited at the gate of Jules Cemetery. Magnus was beginning to be a pain in her butt. She couldn't figure out why he hated, or in fact, had it out for her. I mean he's like what nine-hundred years old! Never the less here she stood, not for herself but for Carmen. Jessica was starting to think he wasn't coming but then like magic he appeared on the other side of the gate.
"You're late, Bane." Jessica remarked sarcastically.

"No you are just early, Mrs. Branwell." He smiled.
"My name's Jessica Callaway, and that'll never change."
Magnus laughed. "Whatever you say."
"Are you going to invite me inside or are we doing this through bars?" She asked.

"Follow me."
Jessica stepped inside wearily and followed him.
He turned to her suddenly and grabbed her right shoulder making her wince in pain. "Brave little Jessica Callaway the girl who never gave up." He smirked. "If she could see you now she'd be so ashamed at the monster she became." His grip tightened on her shoulder. "Tell me what happened to your shoulder." He said, then continued before she could answer. "I wonder could it be from where you were beaten for not telling Him where to find the others, or maybe from being stabbed as a little girl." He finished putting emphasis on the word him.
"What do you want from me, Magnus?" She cried.
"Tell me can how it feels to break your own mother's heart." He sneered. "Tell me can you still hear her screaming to come back inside the house." He laughed.  "Can you still see your brother crying over her cold lifeless body?" He asked.
Jessica didn't say anything as she blinked back tears that threaten to spill out.
"Answer me!" He demanded.
Jessica didn't move.
 "Answer me, Jessica!"
"Fine!" She yelled. "Yes! Yes I can!" She yelled.
"Tell, Jessica, tell me the story of that day." He demanded tightening his grip.
A sigh escaped Jessica's lips and she nodded. "Fine." She said through gritted teeth.
"I had just turned six....." She began.

Jessica sat on the back porch of her family's house in Brooklyn. It was beautiful out that cold winter's day as the snow covered everything in sight and was still coming. As she watched something shiny caught her attention. She started toward the object when her mother appeared on the porch.
Jesse!" She called. "Get back here.".
Jessica didn't listen as she got closer to the shiny thing.
"Jessica, get inside!" Her mother called again.
Her mother continued to call until she saw her daughter bend down and pick up a shiny object; a trigger.
"Jessica, don't touch that!" She yelled frantically. For what Jessica didn't know was her mother and father had been getting death threats lately. "Jessica stop don't mess with that!" She yelled one last time but it was one use.
Jessica turned toward the sound of her mother's voice, and as she  did the string that was attached to the trigger pulled. A explosion was heard quickly followed by screams. Jessica watched slowly as she mother sunk to the ground. She let go of  the thing and ran to her mother.
"Mamma?" She said and checked for a pulse.
No answer.

"Mamma!" She cried and shook the woman. "Mamma, no!" She started crying. "Mamma! Mamma, wake up please!" She prayed. "Goodbye, Mamma, I love you." Jessica rose to her feet and ran into the house.
"Father!" She called. "Father!"  She called a little louder.
She ran through the house calling his name before she found him face up in the kitchen. "No!" She cried and ran to him. She checked for a pulse, but came up empty. "I love you, Daddy, rest in peace." She walked upstairs and to her sister's bedroom. "Mase?" She knocked. "Maisie, you in there?" She walked in and stared at the bed where her sister lay in the covers. She sighed and walked over as she heard her sister groan.
"Jesse, I'm trying to sleep." Her sister sighed.
"Maisie, we need to leave." Jessica said. "Now, Mase!"
Maisie slowly got out of bed and sent Jessica a glare. "I'm going downstairs to sleep since you won't leave me alone."  She said. Maisie pushed past her and mumbled something about little sisters being a waste to the world.
"I love you, Mase." Jessica said scared of what could happen.
"Love you too, Jess." She yelled back sarcastically.
That was the last time she saw her sister. Jessica made her way through the house and out the front door.
"Jessica!" She heard a familiar voice cry from the backyard.
She made her way around back to be met with her brother crying over their mother. He arose from the porch and ran to her.
"Oh, Jessica." He cried and hugged her tightly. "Is anyone else....." His voice failed as he clutched her closer to him.  "I'm glad you'e okay, Jesse J."  He whispered.
Jessica shook her head. "They're gone."

Jessica wiped a tear away and glared at Magnus. "Happy, Mr. Bane?" She asked sarcastically.
Magnus dropped his hand from her shoulder. He looked sad for a moment before recovering his composer. "Yes, Miss Callaway, I am." With that he vanished into the shadows around them.
Jessica wiped a few tears away as she made her way to the exit.
She was halfway to the Institute  when a black car pulled to the side of the road, and  man got out of it. He was tall with dark hair, but the streets didn't have good lighting so she couldn't make out anything else. She ignored the man and continued to walk toward the institute.

"Jessica!" He yelled from the other side of the road. "Jessica, you need a ride?" He asked.
Jessica couldn't help but smile at the voice. She ran across the empty street to him. She hugged him and he hugged her back.
"Are you crying?" Peter asked concerned.
Jessica nodded against his chest.
He held her a little closer to him. "Shh. Jessica it's okay I'm here." He said.
"I'm here, Jesse J." He whispered to her. He just held her and whispered incoherent things to her for a long time.
"Come on, Jess, let's get you home, Sweetheart."
She smiled up at him. "Okay." She said, her voice cracking because of crying.

He led her to the passenger seat before getting behind the wheel. Once the car was started and had taken off he reached and grabbed Jessica's hand with a small  smile. "Me and you, Jesse J, til the end." He said, which made her laugh.
"Til the end." She mumbled.
