Chapter 8: New Orders

"Tonight's a Full Moon." Mimmi says. "Why aren't you singing?" She later asks Sirena, who had been silent this time instead of singing one of her Full Moon songs.

"I keep thinking about the pod." She says. "Have they moved North? Will I ever see my sister again?"

"Of course you'll see Aquata." I assure her.

"The pod will never return to Mako as long as Zac can activate the Merman Chamber." Ondina says.

"But he promised us we'd be safe." Mimmi says.

"Zac doesn't know what will happen." Ondina counters, "None of us do. Which is why we have to make sure he doesn't go there tonight."

"How can we stop him?" Mimmi asks.

"You're his sister. Talk to him. Make him see that what he's doing is too risky."

"Zac wants to know what the Chamber is for. I can't change his mind about that."

"So that's our plan? Sit back, let him start it up, and hope for the best?"

"No. I go with him, to make sure things don't go wrong."

"I think it would be safer if we all go." Sirena says.

"Agreed." I add.

"Sure." Ondina says, "Let's take some music and snacks, and have a party. I had a plan. When you come up with something better, let me know."

With that, she stormed out of the Grotto.

~Jasper's POV~

We had just got out of our physics class, and were heading across campus.

"I like physics." Cam says, "I always come out of class feeling much smarter."

'Sure, Cam.' I thought to myself.

"Well, tell Mr. Johnson that." Evie says, "It'll make his day."

Rita then came over, asking to talk to Zac. As they left, Evie and Cam went to their next class while Erik and I waited.

"What do you think they're talking about?" I ask.

"Probably 'Don't go to Mako tonight. It's a Full Moon.'" Erik says.

"Do you think he'll go?" I ask.

"Does it matter? It's his choice."

Sometime later, Zac returned.

"What did Rita want?" I asked. "Let me guess, it was about the Chamber. Don't activate it, right?"

"She's scared of what it might do." Zac says.

"Of course she is." I say. "So what's the best way to conquer fear? Knowledge. Find out what we're really dealing with."

"We?" Zac asks.

"You, me, Erik, mermen." I add, "This is your destiny, Zac. You've got to do it."

"No, he doesn't." Erik says. "Besides, maybe he has a point. None of us knows what it can do."

"It's also not that simple." Zac adds.

"Why not?" I ask. "You're the man. Nobody else can do this but you."

"Let it go, Jasper." Erik says, but I ignore him.

"Your whole life has been leading to this point." I add, "You have to do it."

"When I do it," Zac says, "if I do it, it's my call. But it won't be tonight." With that, he walked off.

I was about to say something else, Erik stopped me.

"Don't even start." He says.

~Third Person POV~

"You're buying the juices?" Sirena asked Ondina as the girls approached the Cafe and sat down at a table. "How come?"

"I'm just trying to say sorry for getting upset before." Ondina responds.

"You never say sorry." Mimmi says.

"So now I am." Ondina answers. "If Zac wants to find out about the Chamber, maybe you're right. We should let him?"

"You never change your mind, either." Mimmi says.

"That's not entirely true." Manoa adds. "She used to say mermen were the enemy." As she said this, she looked over at Jasper, who was cleaning tables nearby.

"Zac will go to Mako whatever we do, but you shouldn't go." Ondina says to Mimmi. "The Chamber was built for mermen, not mermaids."

"He's my brother," Mimmi says, "I won't let him go alone."

"Mimmi, don't be stupid."

"Stop trying to talk me out of it because you can't."

Ondina then let out a frustrated sigh as she got up and walked over to Jasper.

"Hey, I was just coming to take your order." He says.

"The usual. Whatever." Ondina responds.

"Why are you so down?" Jasper asks. "You should be happy."

"About what?'"

"Zac's gone cold about Mako tonight."

"You mean he's not going?"

"So he says." Jasper then walked back inside while Ondina went to convince Zac to go.

~Later That Night~

The girls entered the Cafe and approached the table where Zac and Evie were sitting at.

"I can't believe you changed your mind about going." Mimmi says.

"Just be relieved he did." Evie says

"Exactly." Ondina adds. "I, um... like Sirena's dress. Don't you?" She also adds, changing the subject.

"It's really nice." Manoa says.

"It was so sudden." Mimmi says, bringing the conversation back to Mako, "I can't help thinking something's happened."

"Like what?" Evie asks.

"Like nothing." Ondina says. "Nothing's happened."

"Actually, it has." Zac says, "Rita told me that Mimmi and I are descendant from mermen royalty."

"Do we have to call you 'princess' now?" Sirena asks Mimmi.

"Mermaids abandoned royalty centuries ago." Ondina says, "we're not starting it up again now."

"Our ancestors ended the wars by choosing not to use the Chamber." Zac continues to explain, "I think they had the right idea."

"Maybe they did." Mimmi responds

"Well Your Majesty, would you like to get the drinks?" Evie asked Zac, teasing him a bit. He then laughs a bit before getting up and going over to where Cam, Erik, and Jasper were standing.

"Full Moon's rising." Cam says, "Shouldn't we be headed to Mako soon? I want to be there when you start it up. We know the code."

"Nope." Zac says. "Not going. Five tropical juices, thanks."

"On it." Erik says, getting the drinks.

"All your hard work's been wasted, Cam." Jasper says."

"You're kidding. Why?" Cam asks.

"It's not too late to change your mind." Jasper adds.

"Drop it, Jasper." Erik says.

"It's my decision, not yours, okay?" Zac states before returning to the girls to watch Sirena sing.

"Run to me, my baby. Bring your love to me. Hold me close now baby. Oh, oh, whoa. Thought I'd like to get around with you, baby..."

As sirena sang, Zac and Ondina gave each other knowing looks before he stood up and exited, heading for Mako. After a moment, Mimmi started wondering where Zac went, and Ondina volunteered to go look for him, heading out to Mako herself. Another moment passed before Mimmi had a vision of Zac on Mako and told Evie and Manoa. The girls then approached Sirena as she finished her next song.

"Zac's on Mako." Mimmi says. "We have to go, now."

"What do I tell David?" She asked.

Before either of us could give her an excuse, David came over.

"Sorry, I can't stay." Sirena tells him.

"What? Why?" David asks.

"It's her throat." Manoa quickly answers.

"Yeah, it's really sore." Sirena adds.

"We have to get her home." Evie says. And the girls rush out and head for Mako.

Not long after, Erik followed them with Jasper right behind him. Cam tried to leave, but was left behind when Carly asked him to stay while she sang for Sirena.

Back at the Chamber, Zac watched as the moon came overhead and filled the center of the room. He then carefully touched the symbols in the order Mimmi told him. After that, the Trident symbol on the floor started to glow, and then the Trident appeared from the mist, hovering over the symbol. As Zac went to reach for it, he heard a voice behind him.

"Stop! Don't touch it. Move away." Ondina ordered.

"What are you doing here?" Zac asked, "we had a deal I'd come alone."

"You want to protect Mimmi?" Ondina asks, "So do I, and all mermaids."

"I've always said I'd do that."

"Well, you might not have a choice. It's time to destroy this place."

"No." Both Zac and Ondina were ready to use their powers against each other if needed.

"Ondina." Mimmi says as she, Evie, Sirena, and Manoa enter as well.

"Don't hurt Zac!" Evie says.

"I won't if he gets out of the way!" Ondina replies.

"Zac, you said you weren't coming here." Mimmi says.

"Why did you follow him?" Manoa asks.

"I'm doing as Veridia instructed." Ondina answers.

"You saw Veridia?" Sirena asked.

"She told me if I destroy the Chamber, the pod can return." Ondina explained.

"But we're banished." Manoa says.

"Not anymore." Ondina responds. "Veridia agreed that if I do this, the banishment is lifted."

"No!" Jasper says, making his and Erik's presence known as well. "We need to know what this place is for."

"How many times to I have to say it?" Ondina says, "It's too dangerous!"

"What if you destroy Mako?" Erik asks.

"What?" Ondina says, confused.

"The Mermaid Council doesn't know what this place does. No one does." Mimmi says

"Or what will happen if you try to destroy it." Sirena adds.

"Veridia said it was the only way." Ondina says.

"How do you know she's right?" Evie asks.

"The mermaid council discussed it." Ondina responds, "They said it would work!"

"And what if they're wrong?" Manoa counters.

"My ancestor didn't destroy the Chamber." Zac reasons, "Don't you wonder why?"

"You can't risk it, Ondina." Sirena says.

"I want the pod back." Ondina says after a pause. "I want to go home."

"We all do." Mimmi says, "So don't put it at risk."

Another pause, and Ondina reluctantly gives up.

"Do it Zac!" Jasper says, "Take the Trident."

"No." Erik says. "That could just make things worse."

"Please don't, Zac." Evie adds.

"I'm sorry, Evie." Zac responds, looking at his girlfriend, "I have to. But you need to go. I'm not going to do it unless you're safe."

"Zac, we don't have time!" Jasper urges after noticing the image of the moon starting to leave.

"I'm not leaving you." Mimmi says, approaching her brother.

"I'm staying, too." Evie adds, joining Mimmi.

Sirena followed, Ondina moved closer, and Manoa and Erik were now nervously holding hands. The group then watched as Zac reached for the Trident, but instead it shimmered. Zac tried again, only to see the same result. It wasn't the real Trident, but a projection. The image of the moon and the Trident then vanished, and the group quickly rushed out of the Chamber.

"Why didn't you tell us about Veridia?" Mimmi asked Ondina as the entryway closed behind them.

"Forget that." Jasper says. "We just got told how to activate the Chamber. Am I right, Zac?"

"Yeah we need the Trident." Zac says. "We need to bring the real one."

"Great." Jasper says, "Where do we get it?"

"We can't." Zac responds. "It's gone."

"It was broken." Sirena adds, "Destroyed."

"But we're so close." Jasper says.

"Forget it, Jasper. It's over." Erik says, "Just let it go."

Everyone else then left, while Jasper stayed behind for a moment before leaving. Back at the Grotto, Zac and the girls explained what happened to Rita.

"Without the Trident, the Chamber can never be activated." She says.

"So you think Mako is safe now?" Mimmi asks.

"Yes." Rita responds. "However, you took a great risk going there tonight."

"I'm sorry I lied," Zac says, "but I thought I was doing the right thing."

"I'm just glad this Chamber business is over for good." Evie says.

"I still have to tell Veridia what happened tomorrow." Ondina says. I guess we'll still be banished. I'm sorry."

"You did what you did for us," Mimmi assures her, "so we'll face her together."

The next morning, the girls met with Veridia in the Moon Pool.

"You did not complete your task as I instructed." Sche scolds.

"I know, but the Chamber can't be started without the Trident." Ondina explains. "So Mako is safe."

"And it's safe for the pod to come home." Sirena adds.

"Does that mean we're no longer banished?" Manoa asks.

"It is never wise to disobey the mermaid council." Veridia says. "However... your banishment had ended."

"When can the pod come home?" Mimmi asks.

"It will take some time to gather them, but by the next Full Moon, Mako will be ours again."

The girls then pulled each other in a group hug, relieved that not only was the pod coming back, but they could rejoin them. Well, all except a certain Aqua-Tail was excited.
