Chapter 13: The Chosen One

The girls were at Mako, in the Moon Pool. They were worried about the Full Moon tonight, what Jasper might try, and how they can stop him.

"We still aren't certain what the Chamber will do." Sirena says.

"Pretty sure the mermen didn't build it to hang their paintings." Ondina remarks.

"I'm so sorry about Jasper." Manoa says.

"We didn't think he would do that." Mimmi adds.

"Well, he did." Ondina says. "He's got the Trident stone, and now everything we've done has been for nothing.

There was a silence for a moment before the girls swam to the Grotto.

"We must find a way to stop Jasper." Rita says, "The Chamber is connected to the Moon Pool, and the Moon Pool is a part of us."

"So, if Jasper activates the chamber, we could be affected." Mimmi says.

"Ondina, Jasper cares for you." Manoa adds, "Maybe if you spoke to him, you could talk him out of it."

"I'm not talking to him." Ondina says.

"I don't think you have a choice." Sirena adds.

"Sirena and Manoa are right." Rita says "You're the only one he'll listen to."

"Come on." Mimmi adds, "It's time you use some of that famous Ondina charm.

Reluctantly, Ondina agrees and finds Jasper at the beach.

"I didn't think you'd want to see me." He says, turning to face her.

"Why did you do it?" Ondina asks.

"The only way to make the Chamber safe is to control it. Zac isn't going to use it, and Erik won't, so I had no choice."

"Rita believes the Chamber is dangerous to mermaids, to us."

"Of course she does. She's old school. Mermen are the enemy. You know I'd never hurt you."

"Then don't go to Mako tonight. You said you cared about me."

"I do!"

"Then let it go! The Chamber belongs in the past. It should stay there."

"You want your home back, don't you?"

"You know I do."

"Then let me give it to you." Jasper says, taking Ondina's hands in his.

Disappointed, Ondina remained silent and walked away.

Meanwhile, Zac, Cam, Evie, and Erik were at the Cafe, working ona plan themselves.

"What if I talked to Jasper?" Zac offers, "Make him see some sense."

"You think?" Evie asks.

"Not likely." Erik says, "Jasper has always been determined. Once he sets his mind on something, there's no changing it.

"How do you know?" Evie asks him.

"He caused quite a bit of trouble the last time we were in the same area." Erik replies, "He easily gets carried away with whatever he's working on."

"Either way, he's not likely to show his face till the Full Moon tonight." Cam says.

"Or not." Evie says, because speak of the devil, Jasper was approaching them. Zac tensed and the others glared at him.

"Relax, Zac." Jasper says, "I'm not here to hurt you. The Chamber was built for mermen. You and Erik will always be welcome."

"Don't do it, Jasper." Zac pleads, "It's too dangerous."

"Sorry, Zac, but tonight we're going to see what that place can do." Jasper replies, pulling out the stone.

Zac tried to stand, but Jasper forced him against the rail with his powers. Erik then tried to use his to get the stone, but was also sent back. While that happened, Mimmi had a vision of it, warning the girls back at the Grotto.

"Stay away from Mako tonight." Jasper tells the two mermen, before turning to Evie and Cam, "All of you." He then released Zac and Erik before taking off.

"Zac!" Mimmi called, running over to the group, Manoa following.

"What happened?" Manoa asked, and Evie told both of them about Jasper.

Zac angrily got up and left, and Mimmi and Evie went to follow, leaving Cam, Manoa, and Erik at the Cafe.

"We can't let Jasper do it. He's gotta be stopped." Manoa says. "He has no idea what he's doing."

"We'll stop him." Erik assures her. "He's not going to hurt you guys."

"How?" Manoa asks, "He has the stone."

"I hate to say it, but she's right." Cam adds, "It's not looking so good for you guys right now."

"Thanks, Cam." Erik says sarcastically. "Come on," He adds, leading Manoa away from the Cafe.

"Do you really think there's a way to stop this?" Manoa asks.

"I'm sure there is." Erik responds. "There has to be."

"You need to stall him. Delay it as long as you can. We're working on a plan at the Grotto right now. I just hope it works."

"I can do what I can, but I might not be able to buy you guys a lot of time."

"Anything will be better than nothing." Manoa says, before turning to face the nearby ocean. "I just don't know what to do next if we pull this off."

"The pod's coming back, right? Didn't you want to see them? Try and convince Veridia that mermen are not all bad?"

"I do, but.... I don't know anymore."

"Well, for now, let's focus on stopping Jasper. Then we'll go from there. Alright?" Erik asks, holding Manoa close to him.

"Alright." She says after a long pause. The two then stood there for a moment before Erik surprised her by pulling her into a kiss. It took her a moment to register, but she quickly returned it. During that moment, they forgot all their worries about Jasper and the Chamber.

"I'll be alright." Erik assures her when they break apart.

"I know." Manoa says, and the two split off to prepare.

"Zac can't help us." Mimmi says when the mermaids were gathered in the Grotto.

"Then we must do what mermaids have always done, help ourselves." Ondina responds.

"We know Jasper is gonna go to the Chamber, so why don't we just take him on?" Sirena asks, "We have moon rings."

"I don't think it's gonna be that easy." Rita says. "Jasper has his own powers, but he also has Zac's powers in the Trident stone."

"Veridia believed that the way to destroy the Chamber was while it was being activated." Ondina states.

"If that's true, then we need to be in there with him tonight, during the Full Moon." Manoa adds.

"There's a possibility that if we do that, Mako could be destroyed." Mimmi adds.

"If we want our home back, we don't have a choice." Ondina says.

Meanwhile, over at Mako, Jasper had just reached the Chamber entrance. He paused for a moment when he heard something behind him. When he turned, he saw Zac and Erik approaching.

"Didn't expect to see you two here." Jasper says.

"We couldn't keep away." Zac responds.

"You're going to try and stop me." Jasper challenges.

"You said that this was a merman place, you said we would be welcome." Erik says.

"And even without powers, I'm still a merman." Zac adds.

Jasper seemed satisfied with this, and used the stone to open the cave.

"Welcome." He says, and the three mermen enter the Chamber.

Back at the Grotto, the sun was setting as the girls stood around the sea entrance.

"There's a chance we won't succeed." Ondina says.

"It doesn't matter." Sirena says, "Mako is our home."

"We have to fight for it." Mimmi adds.

"Whatever it takes." Manoa adds.

The mermaids then hold hands and jump into the water before speeding to Mako.

Back with the guys, Jasper sood by the pedestal while Zac and Erik stood on opposite sides of the Chamber, waiting for the image of the moon to appear.

"It's time." Jasper says when it finally does. "You feel it, guys? We're at the crossroads of history."

The moon continued on its path, illuminating the Trident symbol on the ground. As Jasper touched the symbols on the pedestal in order, Zac and Erik slowly approached him. They watched as the image of the Trident appeared, and before Jasper could use the stone, Zac tackled him. As the two fought, Jasper dropped the stone. Erik took his chance and got the stone.

"I thought you were smarter than this, Zac!" Jasper says angrily. "Don't you see what I'm trying to do?"

"You are going to destroy the mermaids!" Zac says.

"I'm protecting them! Once I have control of the Chamber, they'll be safe!" Jasper counters.

"No, they won't!" Erik says. "You hurt them, especially Manoa, I will never forgive you."

The two mermen tried to run, but Jasper threw Zac aside with his powers. This distracted Erik long enough for Jasper to send him flying, knocking the stone out of his hand. Jasper then took the chance and sent the stone to the Trident image, which sparked before fading to just the stone. There was a small flash of blue light as the Moon Pool water started to drain from the Moon Pool and into a cylindrical tower around the stone.

"Now we'll see what this place does." He says once the water stops.

Zac tries to stop him, but nothing happens. Erik also stood, ready to fight back, when the mermaids arrive.

"Jasper, no!" Ondina begs.

Instead, he ignores her and jumps into the water in his merman form, earning a collective gasp from the mermaids.

"Destroy the stone." Ondina orders, and the four mermaids use their moon rings on it. However, it had no effect as the stone began to take their power.

"It's absorbing our powers!" Sirena exclaims, but they continue trying until the moon rings were drained.

Light started to pulse from the stone before Ondina weakly got on her knees, groaning in pain

"Ondina?" Mimmi asked before she felt the effects as well.

Sirena was next, then Manoa.

"Manoa!" Erik exclaims, rushing to her side.

"Erik, it hurts." Manoa says.

"It's gonna be alright, I'm right here. Just focus on me." Erik says.

"Stop him." Manoa begs. "You need to stop him.

"Jasper, shut it down!" Erik yells.

"Shut it down, Jasper!" Zac adds.

Jasper, seeing the mermaids in pain, reluctantly swims for the stone and tries to pull it out, only to get sent back to the ground in his human form.

"Erik, you have to stop it." Manoa says weakly.

"I can't, only Zac can." He responds.

As if on cue, Evie rushed inside.

"Zac!" She exclaimed, helping her boyfriend up.

"Help me." He says, "I need to shut it down."

With Evie's help, Zac jumped into the water and used all his strength to remove the stone. As soon as he did, he collapsed to the ground, dropping it. The water began to return to the Moon Pool, and the mermaids slowly got back on their feet. Before anyone could start celebrating, Evie began to call out Zac's name in a panic. He wasn't waking up.

"Help him!" She begged, "Use your moon rings!"

"We can't." Sirena says, "The stone took all their power."

"You have to do something." Evie responds.

Mimmi joined Evie at Zac's side before getting an idea, and she grabbed the stone, holding it against his chest. Ondina and Sirena held on to each other with fear, Manoa clung to Erik, and Jasper stood back silently as they all watched Mimmi.

"Please, Zac." She whispered, "Don't leave me. Come back."

The stone pulsed slightly before a bright flash of light, and Zac was jolted awake. He moved Mimmi's hand to see that the stone was now a pile of dust.

"Hey sis." He breathes, "What's happening?"

A wave of relief washed over everyone but Jasper as they all exited the Chamber. On their way back, Manoa stopped.

"What's up?" Erik asks her.

"I was just thinking, maybe taking a break from all this crazy Mako stuff for a while." Manoa says, "See more of the land and what the world has to offer."

"Are you sure?" Erik asks.

"Yeah," Manoa replies, "besides, Mako won't be going anywhere. And I'm not thinking of leaving forever."

"Well, then you'll need someone to go with you."

"I was hoping you'd say that. How soon should we leave?"

"How soon do you want to?"

"As soon as possible. Maybe tomorrow?"

"Alright, then. But make sure you tell the others."

"I will."

The next morning, Ondina and Jasper met up at the beach.

"I'm so sorry." He says, "I never meant that to happen. Is there a chance you could forgive me?"

"You had a choice... me or the Chamber." Ondina says, "You chose the Chamber."

"We could start over... forget this all ever happened." Jasper begs.

"I'd always be wondering if you'd choose something else over me." Ondina continues, "Goodbye, Jasper."

Jasper calls her name as she walks away from him, but she ignores him and continues walking. Defeated, Jasper runs into the ocean and swims away from the Mako area.

The remaining two mermen met up with the mermaids in the Grotto, where Rita and Veridia were waiting.

"Zac, Erik, you two have shown it is possible for mermen and mermaids to live in peace." Veridia says. "For that, we thank you. Evie, you too have shown great courage and selflessness."

Rita then motions Evie over, and presents her with a moon ring.

"Well done, Evie." Rita says.

"You are the first land girl ever to receive this honor." Veridia states.

Evie excitedly returns to Zac, who hugs her.

"Sirena, Ondina, Mimmi, and Manoa." Veridia continues, "When you first ran away to save Mako, I had no faith you could do it. I was wrong. You have reclaimed our home. You have shown us that there are land people we can trust and who will keep our secret. I especially owe you an apology, Manoa. I was afraid of what might happen with you because of Moia's Curse, but you have shown that not even it can stop you from doing the right thing. Maybe that can soon be renamed."

"Perhaps in time, two worlds will become one." Rita adds.

"Actually," Manoa says, " There's something I need to say." She stepped forward, and Erik, who had been standing by Zac, moved to her side and took her hand in his. "I had been thinking about this, but we won't be immediately returning to the pod. Erik and I are going to spend some time exploring the world."

"Manoa..." Sirena says.

"We won't be gone for good. And I promise we'll return." Manoa adds.

"Very well." Veridia says, "Then I wish you two the best, and we'll look forward to your return. I must go now. The pod will soon be arriving at Mako."

Veridia and Rita left, while the others each gave Manoa and Erik various "We'll miss you's" and "Take care's." Zac and the other mermaids raced to Mako to see the pod while Manoa and Erik stood by the sea entrance.

"So, you ready for the next adventure?" Erik asks.

"If you're there, yeah." Manoa responds.

The two then dived into the water, and swam away, on to a new life.
