Chapter 11: The Truth About Evie (and others)
Manoa and Erik had just arrived at the Cafe, with Evie and Carly not long after.
"David, you look sharp." Carly comments when David appears in a suit.
"It's the young entrepreneur's seminar." David explains, "I have to dress for success."
"So what are you doing here?" Manoa asks curiously.
"Just checking in on my new manager." David replies, nodding towards Carly.
"I'm fine." Carly says. "I won't let you down."
"Thanks." David says, "I've been looking forward to this for ages. The brochure says it's gonna unlock my full corporate potential. Where's Jasper?" He asks, noticing that the dark-haired boy wasn't there.
"When has he ever showed up on time?" Carly responds.
"He's always late?" Manoa asks.
"Yeah, he is." Erik explains. "And usually has some excuse for it." He adds, trying to subtly explain that the cause is normally merman related.
"Actually, Manoa, would you be willing to help out again, at least until he gets here?" David asks.
"Of course." Manoa replies, "Always happy to help."
"Great!" Carly says before turning to David and forcing him out, "Now go! Manoa, I want you to start back here with me." She adds before going in the back.
"Bet Jasper's out with Ondina again." Manoa says to Erik.
"I wouldn't be surprised." He responds.
Meanwhile, that was exactly what was going on. Jasper was at the beach with Ondina.
"I guess you have to go to your job now." She says, noticing how long they had been out.
"I guess." Jasper replies, checking his watch. "I'm kind of running late."
"You're always running late." Ondina says, "Why do you even bother?"
"It keeps me busy. But they can wait five more minutes." He then stood up and led her towards the water, were they swam off.
Back at the Cafe, Erik, Manoa, and Carly were struggling to keep up with the large crowd. Evie also noticed this and walked over to the girls.
"Looks like you could use a hand." She says.
"Yes please." Carly says, "There's a tray of sandwiches in the cool room. Could you grab it for me?"
"Coming right up." Evie says before going back into the cool room.
"Thank you. You're my hero." Carly says. "Manoa, could you switch with Erik for a moment? I just need his help to catch up."
"Sure, no problem." Manoa says, going to let him know.
Some time had passed with the four doing their best to keep up with the rush, and they noticed it suddenly getting hot in the building. Zac and Cam had also arrived, the former taking Evie outside. Manoa noticed this and decided to check on them.
"Everything alright?" She asks.
"Manoa, do mermaids ever get colds?" Evie asks.
"No, why?" The red-haired mermaid responds.
"I think I got one, and the mermaid part of me is having a really bad reaction." Evie explains.
"What do you mean 'bad reaction?'" Zac asks.
Right at that moment, Cam and Carly walk out to see Evie sneeze, which caught an umbrella on fire.
"Get her to the Grotto." Manoa whispers as Zac and Evie rush away, and Cam putting out the fire.
Meanwhile, Cam offered to take Evie's spot and help out, and soon Carly was asking him and Manoa questions about the incident.
"You want to tell me what I just saw?" Carly asked him.
"Uh... spontaneous combustion?" Cam said, trying to cover for Evie.
"Evie sneezed and an umbrella caught fire. How does that work?" Carly says
"Pretty random, right?" Manoa says.
"And look at these." Carly adds, holding out the sandwich tray. "They weren't toasted when I left them in the cool room, and Evie's the only other person who's been in there. How do you explain that?"
"Maybe she snuck a blowtorch in." Cam lied.
"Really?" Carly asks, not believing him.
"Look, weird things happen all the time." Manoa says, "Maybe you should just forget about it."
"The Cafe could have burnt down while I was in charge." Carly says, "How can I forget about it?" She then noticed Cam and Manoa were avoiding her gaze. "Why aren't you two looking at me?"
"Aren't we?" Cam asks.
"No!" Carly says, growing more frustrated. "In fact, I think you're trying not to look at me."
"No way, I like looking at you." Cam says.
"I should see if Erik needs any help." Manoa adds before leaving the two and informing him about what happened with Evie.
"Evie did what?" He asks.
"I know, but I saw it, and so did Carly. She won't stop bugging Cam and I about it. She's starting to get suspicious." Manoa says
"So what do we do?"
"I don't know. I think she's gonna find out though."
Their conversation was interrupted when Jasper and Ondina entered the Cafe.
"Hey guys," Jasper says casually, "What's happening?"
"I'll tell you what's happening." Carly says to him coldly. "We're busier than ever, and Manoa was kind enough to help out because one of our waiters didn't show up, again."
"Relax," Jasper says, "I'm here now."
"Not good enough."
"I'm always a few minutes late. David doesn't seem to mind and he's the boss."
"Well, today I'm your boss, and you're fired."
By this point, Cam had been telling Ondina what was going on with Evie, and they, along with Manoa and Erik, stopped what they were doing to watch Jasper and Carly.
"Carly, come on." Jasper begs, but she wasn't having any of it. "Fine. We'll see what David has to say."
"He'll be back later." Carly says, "Until then, consider yourself unemployed."
Jasper then angrily stormed out with Ondina following a moment after. Zac and Evie later returned, and while she seemed better, things started to become more difficult for her. One example was when she knocked over a glass of water and couldn't clean it up without transforming. Carly was also growing more suspicious of Evie, while Zac and the others were trying to cover for her. More time passed, and soon everyone noticed the room getting significantly colder, causing everyone except Cam and the merpeople. It also didn't help when Evie froze the counter area, covering it in ice.
Sirena, Mimmi, and Ondina showed up not long after, saying that they needed to get back to the Grotto and try another way to fix it. Carly then stormed in, demanding answers, but when Cam tried to come up with a lie, he was frozen by all the other mermaids except Manoa. In a panic, Evie rushed out of the Cafe and back to her place, with Zac, Erik, and the girls following.
"We have to tell her the truth." Evie says, "It's the only thing she'll believe."
"We can't." Zac says.
"She's this close to finding out anyway!" Evie counters, "And Cam knows."
"The less people who know, the better." Ondina says.
"She is my best friend." Evie says, "I don't want to lose her."
Before the discussion could continue, the girls sneezed again, this time causing snow to fall in the area they were standing, and on everyone except Evie. One by one, they started to transform from the contact: first Sirena, then Mimmi, Ondina, Manoa, Erik, and Zac. To make things worse, that was the exact moment Carly arrived with the still frozen Cam.
"Evie, I need answers!" She says before seeing the sight in front of her. Not only was there a small area covered in snow, but there were four mermaids (three orange tails, one aqua) and two mermen with blue tails lying in the snow nervously looking up at her.
"Carly, there's something you should know." Evie says before reaching into the snow and letting herself transform.
Her initial response was stunned silence, but eventually the others were able to get up, dry off, stop the snow, and help Cam. Evie then explained everything to Carly and why it had been kept a secret from her.
Later that day, the girls were cured of their colds, and Manoa returned to the Cafe with Erik just as Jasper stormed out. David had just told him that he agreed with Carly's decision to fire him.
Carly was also eyeing them suspiciously as she approached them, as they were standing near the table where Zac and Evie were sitting.
"I just have one thing to say." She tells them. "Do the tails come in different colors?"
The group laughed in relief at this as Evie hugged Carly.
"I wish." Evie says, "It's just orange for mermaids and blue for mermen."
"But yours is aqua, isn't it?" Carly asks Manoa.
"It's a long and complicated story." Manoa says. "Short version: it's part of this ancient curse that my family has had."
Carly simply nodded before returning to work.
"Well, I should get back to it as well." Erik says. "I'll see you around." He adds, giving Manoa a quick kiss on the cheek.
"See you." She responds before exiting the Cafe and returning to the others.
"Well? What happened?" Sirena asked.
"It's all good." Manoa says. "She'll keep our secret."
