Chapter five. ABBIE AND CATBAD
PART 1.
He browsed over the collection of knives and daggers on his table.
Catbad had decided to kill Abbie.
She was far to gone to be any use to him and as for her screaming night terrors.
Sure, It was the humane thing to do.
In the week since he had kidnapped and brought her back to his time, to this his tower, she had collapsed into a state of shock.
No wonder, the horror of knowing her world had ended and with it all that she knew was just to much for the child's mind to bare.
The poor girl blames herself.
She believes it's all her fault.
She believes if she hadn't saved Cu Culainn. Then the Morrigan would never had gone to her time and caused the deaths of everyone she knew.
Catbad knew there was no point in trying to convince her otherwise.
After all she is absolutely right.
He picked out a dagger with a small blade and headed to Abbie's cell.
He knew she would still be cradling and rocking in its far corner.
Best to stab the child quickly.
End her misery fast.
He toyed with the idea of not showing her the blade just take her by surprise, but there was no point.
Her mind is to far gone, she probably won't even know he is in the cell with her.
He climbed the towers stairs thinking how much he missed escalators and tea .
Oh yes hot tea with sugar.
Part 2.
Abbie was imprisoned but not by the damp cell she was curled up in.
Catbad didn't even have to force her in.
She just walked in as far as she could and collapsed into its corner.
Guilt imprisoned her and there was no escape.
The horror of what she had done consumed her waking thoughts .
Forcing her exhausted mind into a torturous sleep.
From which the voices would come.
"Abbie." Called the voice. "Abbie I'm calling you for the up-thing time."
"Mum." Abbie cried recognising her voice.
"Abbie what have you done??"
"I had to mum! I had to save Culainn."
She watched as her ghostly mum appeared from the far dark wall.
"You killed us all Abbie! What where you thinking off!"
"I, I didn't mean to kill anyone! I--."
"Ha! Ha! Ha!"
Abbie and her mom jumped at the loud mocking laughter which came at the far opposite wall.
There appeared Catbad.
Tied to the great stone.
The spear skewered through his heart.
"Ha! How easy your daughter lies!"
He spat squirming on the standing stone.
"Didn't mean to kill anyone. She meant to kill me!"
"She tied me to this rock knowing I was going to be killed ! Your daughter is nothing but a murderer."
"Abbie is this true?" Pleaded her mother.
Abbie's tears couldn't hide her guilt.
Catbad shook his head at her mother.
"I told her you can't change fate. There is always consequences, but did she listen?"
Both looked at her.
Both answered at the same time.
"Abbie never listens."
"Please Mum!" Begged Abbie streching her arms out.
"I didn't mean to.."
Her mum could no longer bear to look at her.
She turned into the wall.
"Please mum!" Abbie begged.
Then her mum faded slowly away.
"Don't go." Screamed Abbie.
But her mother didn't respond.
She just disappeared.
"MUM!....."
"You think she wants to stay with you?" Catbad asked.
"Nobody wants to stay with you.
"You changed the past."
"YOU KILLED ALL OF US!"
Roared Catbad as he too faded away.
"You killed all of us."
"You killed all of us."
Abbie buried her head.
Closed her eyes.
Placed her hands on her ears trying to block out the words.
But her mind was locked into them playing them over and over.
"Killed all of us!"
Then the words stopped.
Silence.
For the first time on entering this cell all went quiet.
Even her mind.
She wondered if she was dead.
"You ok pal?"
She recognised that calm voice.
Her Dad's.
She wanted to speak open her eyes.
She found she couldn't it was as if she was in a deep sleep laying in a bed hearing his voice but unable to reply.
"It's ok Abbie. It is not your time to go. Your time is just starting."
"The secrets of the Druid was created for you. It was always meant for you. Learn them and you will live many life's filled full of adventures."
"The power to change destiny lies within you. The secrets of the Druid will show you how."
"And always know we love you."
The voice was gone and she knew so was her Dad.
A feeling of love filled her.
A feeling she hadn't felt for god knows how long.
She opened her eyes and found herself in the cell.
Catbad was standing over her.
He looked surprised?.. at her stirring up at him.
No not surprise more guilt.
Then she noticed the dagger he held above his head ready to plunge it into her before she interrupted him.
She didn't care.
Love overwhelmed her.
She grabbed him around his waist.
Hugged him her love completely taken him by surprise.
He didn't know what to do.
He looked at the blade and knew he couldn't go threw with it.
Yet.
He dropped the dagger and placed his arms around the crying child.
When she calmed down he led her from the cell.
Down the tower stairs and out into the towers stony court yard.
The sun peeped out between the clouds warming Abbies face for a few seconds.
She stirred out at the big sea and its two islands.
Lambay the island her Dad's gonna take them to if there's a zombie apocalypse.
And just off Howth head Ireland's eye.
Her Dad's sleeping giant.
Fred Flintstone.
Two thousand years in the past and she felt....home.
After a while she looked up at Catbad as if just remembering he was there.
Then the child once more caught him by surprise.
"It's ok I'm going to fix everything!"
She smiled.
"I'm going to be a Druid. I'm gonna be your apprentice."
Part 3.
"My apprentice?" Catbad laughed.
"Yes." She answered wiping the tears from her eyes.
"You want me to teach you the ways of the Druids!"
"Oh. Yes"
"Tell me Abbie do I look like professor Dumbledore.-"
Abbie thought he did look a bit like the one from the first two movies but didn't get a chance to say it.
"-Do you think I have a secret school of Druids hidden in this tower!"
"Wow. Do you?"
"No! by the gods your generation. maybe it's a good thing you ended your world."
"You will teach me to be a Druid!"
She demanded.
"Oh! Why's that pray tell."
"Because me changing time didn't destroy my world. You did! You owe me!" Screamed Abbie and continued.
"You brought me back to your time! You started all this! It's your fault my world ended not mine!"
Catbad threw his arms up in disbelief. "How was I to know you could and would change time. Change Destiny itself. Did you think you could get away with it without there been a price to pay?"
"Lier! You knew didn't you!"
"knew what?"
"Come on all the people in the whole of time and you picked me! The one person who could change destiny itself. Seems like a huge coincidence. You knew all along. you brought me here to do it. Why?"
Catbad gave in.
"Smart. Can't hide nothing from you."
He grinned and started searching the stones in the courtyard.
"Maybe I did." He began.
"A Druid doesn't always know what he's up to. If I did its because I am Druid. I have seen all. My past present and future Life's. Nothing ever changes."
He stopped and picked up a stone.
Examined it.
"To small."
Dumped it, continued his search and conversation.
"Nothing changes. All my Live's endlessly predictable. Loved ones live. Loved ones die. Non stop repeat repeat repe-"
He stopped searching and picked up another stone.
"To big!"
Dropped and continued searching.
"Finding you. Who can change time-"
He picked up another stone. He seemed most happy with it.
"Well that's a punch in the face of gods smug perfectly perfect plan!"
He stood beside her.
"We Druids have a very old saying. If you want to make god laugh tell him your plans. If you want to make a Druid laugh tell him gods plan."
He showed her the stone.
"Once on the druid path Abbie there is no turning back?"
He warned.
She gazed on the cold grey surface of the stone clasped in his hand. Her very will seemed to be drawn into its dark core.
"Do you give all to be a Druid. Think hard and long before you answer for I must warn you before you say yes-"
"YES! Now what must I do?"
"Do?"
He seemed puzzled that she did not know.
"You must die."
He swung.
Hitting her head hard with the stone.
