Chapter 6 Catbad the druid chief.
Chapter 6.
Catbad the Druid chief.
"I'm not a high queen." Abbie said to Cu Culainn.
"But you are. Everything Cathbad has foretold has come true. The crown of Tara has chosen you for our high queen."
"And who is Cat-bad?" Asked Abbie.
"Cathbad." Corrected Cu Culainn.
"That's what I said Catbad." Abbie said and then they heard a loud clash of thunder.
"Here he comes now." Cu Culainn said.
"If I were you I would not make fun of his name." He walked over to Newgrange and put his back up against its wall.
"You may want to join me"
Abbie walked over and joined him.
In the spot Abbie just left there was a flash and a cloud of purple smoke.
A figure dressed like a monk with its face hidden under a hood seemed to emerge from the smoke. In its left hand was a blackthorn walking stick but it didn't seem to need it. The figure seemed to glide over to Abbie and Cu Culainn.
"Abbie this is the high chief Druid of Ireland" Cu Culainn introduced.
"*Seanachie of the red branch knights ...Master of magic... Sear of the future..the immortal.. Catbad...oh sorry... I mean.. CATHBAD!"
"Cat- bad sounds cooler. I like it"
Spoke Catbad smiling and removing his hood.
"So you found the bearer of the crown.'
Abbie was surprised. she expected to see an old wizard with a white beard.
But Catbad looked only a bit older than Cu Culainn just not as good looking.
"I thought you would look older?" She said without thinking.
"That's because I am immortal." He laughed, rubbing his bright red hair.
He looked glad to be out off the hood.
He gazed deep into Abbie's eyes as if searching for an answer. Then smiled as if he found one.
"Yes you are our high queen with my help you will be the greatest ever" He announced.
"I will make you a legend!"
"I don't won't to be high queen or a legand."
Answered Abbie.
"That is one of the reasons you were chosen." Catbad told her.
"People who want power should never have it."
Catbads face and tone went serious.
"The evil queen medb has raised an army and only the bearer of the crown. You Abbie, can stop her."
Cu Culainn sighed.
"You should take a break from being serious all the time, your scaring the wee one."
Cu Culainn told Catbad while bouncing a stone at the end of the hurl.
"These are serious times!" Gave out Catbad.
"You should be working on your destiny. Becoming Ireland's greatest warrior."
"I'll start tomorrow." Cu Culainn smiled concentrating on the stone bouncing.
"And where is the sword?" Asked Catbad. "I have to give it back."
Cu Culainn dropped the stone.
"Sorry. It broke"
"Stop messing. It's unbreakable. where is it?" Catbad asked again.
"It broke!" Insisted Cu Culainn.
"Ask Abbie if you don't believe me!"
"It's true the sword did brake."
Confirmed Abbie.
Catbad looked stunned.
"How by the goddess Danu, did you break it!" Roared Catbad at Cu Culainn.
"It's unbreakable!"
"Well I didn't break it. It was the bear-" began Cu Culainn.
"YOU BROKE IT!-" spat Catbad.
"What where you doing with it BEFORE this bear!!!"
"You know how you told me the sword was unbreakable. So I told this to the men and they said That can't be true-"
"Let me guess." Catbad sighed. "You tried to break it."
"Only to prove you were right!" Cu Culainn said.
"What did you do?" Catbad asked but didn't want to know."
"Well I ran over it with my chariot,"
Began Cu Culainn taking a deep breath.
"About a hundred times. Threw boulders at it. Flung it off a mountain. Set fire to it. Rammed it into the blacksmiths furance. Jumped on it from a height. Threw more boulders at it. Flung it off a bigger mountain. Cut wood with it. Cut trees with it. Cut boulders with it. Played hurly with it. Mighty sword. Not so mighty hurl -.
"Stop! " Catbad couldn't take anymore.
"I guess the bear was the last straw for the sword." Cu Culainn sighed.
"You guess." Catbad sighed in disbelieve.
"Excalibur! The greatest sword ever made and you broke it."
"Sorry." Cu Culainn said but looked very pleased with himself.
"Merlin is going to turn me into a toad for this." Catbad said to Abbie. "If I'm lucky." He joked.
"Ah well. Least I still have my magic true mirror."
"I'm starved. I could murder a wild boars head." Interrupted Cu Culainn changing the subject.
"Lets get something to eat and some new garments fit for our new high queen"
He led them down past the red branch knights and into the round fortress.
