Season 2 Chapter 68
As Isolde entered the royal designer’s quarters, she immediately noticed the Emperor waiting by the large, arched windows. His golden eyes softened slightly when they met hers, though his stern demeanor remained. Beside him stood the royal designer and two jewelers, their hands clasped nervously as they bowed.
“Your Majesty,” Isolde greeted, her voice steady yet respectful. She bowed deeply, aware of the Empress trailing close behind her like a shadow.
“Lady Isolde,” Leonidas acknowledged, his gaze briefly flicking to the Empress before settling back on Isolde. “You’re here.”
“Indeed, Your Majesty,” Isolde replied with a subtle smile. “I’m grateful for your consideration.”
Before she could say more, the Empress stepped forward, her presence commanding the room.
“Your Majesty, I couldn’t possibly let Lady Isolde go through this alone,” the Empress said smoothly, her tone a blend of feigned concern and playfulness. “After all, she’s inexperienced in matters of fashion and refinement. Who better than I to guide her?”
Leonidas’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he gave a curt nod. “Very well. If you insist.”
The designer gestured toward a collection of gowns displayed on mannequins, each more exquisite than the last. Rich silks in deep hues, delicate embroidery, and intricate beadwork glimmered under the morning light.
“Lady Isolde, these are the finest pieces we’ve prepared for you,” the designer said, bowing slightly. “His Majesty insisted on nothing but perfection.”
The Empress stepped forward, trailing her fingers over the fabric of a crimson gown. “This one is stunning,” she remarked, turning to Leonidas with a smile. “Don’t you think, Your Majesty? It would complement her well—though perhaps it’s a bit bold for someone of her station.”
Isolde’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. ‘This witch'
Leonidas glanced at the gown and then at Isolde. “What do you think, Lady Isolde?”
Isolde took a step forward, examining the gown with a composed expression. “It’s beautiful, but I believe a softer shade might suit me better for the occasion.”
The Empress tilted her head, her smile sharpening. “Oh, Isolde, you shouldn’t shy away from making a statement. After all, your position demands it now.”
Before Isolde could respond, the jewelers stepped in, presenting trays of dazzling necklaces, tiaras, and earrings.
“Your Majesty,” one jeweler said, “we’ve prepared pieces to match Lady Isolde’s elegance. May we suggest this tiara encrusted with sapphires and diamonds?”
The Empress interjected with a laugh. “Sapphires? Surely something less ostentatious would be more appropriate. Perhaps pearls—symbolic of humility and grace.”
Leonidas’s gaze flickered with irritation. “The decision is Isolde’s,” he said firmly. “She’ll wear what she prefers.”
The Empress’s smile faltered briefly, but she quickly recovered. “Of course, Your Majesty. I only wish to help.”
Isolde glanced at the tiara and then at the Emperor. “Sapphires would be perfect, Your Majesty,” she said softly. “Thank you for your thoughtfulness.”
Leonidas nodded, his expression softening. “Good. Then it’s settled.”
As the attendants worked to finalize the fittings, the Empress lingered by Leonidas’s side, engaging him in light conversation. Her laughter rang out as she touched his arm, her words carefully chosen to keep his attention.
Isolde observed from the corner of her eye, her hands tightening at her sides. CSo this is her game. Distract him while undermining me'
Once the final selections were made, Leonidas turned to Isolde. “You’ve chosen well. I’ll have everything sent to your chambers by tonight.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty,” Isolde said, her voice warm but composed.
The Empress smiled brightly, stepping closer to the Emperor. “You’ve outdone yourself, Your Majesty. Lady Isolde is fortunate to have your care and guidance.”
Leonidas’s eyes met Isolde’s briefly before he turned to the Empress. “It’s my duty to ensure she has what she needs.”
Isolde’s lips curved into a subtle smile as she curtsied. “Your Majesty, Your Highness, thank you both for your kindness. If you’ll excuse me, I must prepare for the upcoming banquet.”
As she left, Isolde’s mind raced with strategies. The Empress had successfully inserted herself into the Emperor’s attention today, but Isolde knew she couldn’t afford to let this pattern continue. CIf she thinks she can keep me in her shadow, she’s gravely mistaken’
Behind her, the Empress laughed softly, her voice echoing in the chamber. “She has potential, doesn’t she, Your Majesty? Though I wonder if she’s truly ready for the role you envision for her.”
Leonidas didn’t respond immediately, his gaze lingering on the doorway through which Isolde had disappeared. The Empress’s words hung in the air, unanswered.
