4 - A Phone
There was a lot on my mind while I was going home from my doctor appointment. Once I entered my house though, I dismissed those thoughts.
"I'm back," I say.
"Welcome back Rin. How was your doctor's appointment? Mom told me to tell you to do your homework. She said since you might be home a few minutes after 17, you should start your homework right away when you get home. She seemed angry about the fact that your doctor's appointment ended 15 minutes before you have to do your homework... Next time schedule your doctor's appointments earlier. There was something I wanted to ask you... It had something to do with your doctor appointment. It must have not mattered... Also a friend of yours called asking if you were free right now. I told her you were busy. You should call her back. It was Alexandra. Alexandra was the one who called. You should call her back. Mom told me to ask you when your next doctor's appointment is. She wanted to make sure it wouldn't end less than 30 minutes before you have to do homework. Also mom is at work right now. This week for the weekend she had work today instead of yesterday. I guess you would know that, as she was home yesterday. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know. Oh yeah. I just remembered what I wanted to ask you. How was your doctor appointment? Was it good? What's with that you have? Did you get some things at the doctor's office? It's that time isn't it...? Your 13 now, soon you will be an adult. Well a training-adult, but they are pretty much the same thing. Does being 13 feel weird? Does it feel weird knowing that soon you will be an adult? Well... training adult... But I it's the same thing so I guess it doesn't matter which I say... I will have to remember that. Ahahaha... Like I could remember it. Being 13 can be a weird experience. Once you become an adult. Wait the official term for it is training adult. Didn't I just say it didn't matter which I said? As I was saying, once you move out of your house and live on your own, it's different. Even though the society has made sure we can be very independent... Also they have made sure we are not too independent and that we can rely on others if needed. Oh yeah. Once your 13 and you are living on your own, it feels very different. It can feel like you were being protected and then all that protection is lost. You don't have people reminding you. Although your holo-watch still reminds you," says my Dad.
My dad is a man in his thirties with dirty blonde hair and very light skin, while my mom has more of a reddish tone to her skin than my dad. My dad has hazel eyes, and no one else my family has hazel eyes. My mom and brother have brown eyes, while I have blue.
My dad talks more than most people. Many say my brother talks a lot, but they obviously haven't met my dad. Yes, my brother does talk a lot, but compared to my dad it's nothing. My dad always comes up with things to say. I'm surprised he doesn't forget what he is going to say.
Even though my dad talks a lot, if he doesn't have anything to say, he doesn't talk much. Such as if you talk to him a lot yourself, he will eventually have nothing to say. If you tried locking him in a closet, he would still have lots to talk about. Such as how dark the closet was and how boring it was.
Even though my dad talks a lot, he doesn't talk in places where we are supposed to be quiet. He also can be good at not talking when it seems right. Although if you talk to him in such a place or time, then he will talk a lot. It's better than the past though, as he would talk for hours on end even in a quiet place. His doctor is helping him talk less, as far as I know.
When my dad talks, I don't exactly listen to him. I do listen, but I only try to remember the important things. I only pay attention to the important parts.
"My doctor's appointment was fine. I will call Alexandra back later. I got a charger for my new phone at the doctor's appointment. My phone looks so weird!" I laugh. "Well, it feels weird being 13. I guess I'll be moving out pretty soon, huh? I think it's once I'm 14. I'm pretty sure I become an adult before then though. After I move out I'll be sure to visit."
My reply was nothing compared to what my dad said, but at least I replied. Some people will not even talk to him he talks so much.
"Really? Your doctor's appointment was fine? That's great. Did they have to put you to sleep at all? I know at 13 the doctors usually have to do that. I don't remember why... I think it has something to do with the holo-watches? I'm not sure. When is your next doctor's appointment? I asked you already but you didn't answer. When someone talks to you, you should answer to all their questions! It's respect! Also, I'm sure your phone doesn't look that bad... Long ago people used worse phones than us. It is the 31th century, after all! Show me your phone and I'll prove it that it's not as bad as it seems! Well... even if it does turn out to be bad, you will eventually get a better one. Also, you said you would visit after you move out? That's nice. I hope you do visit. You can show the new phone you get when you do. Although I'm sure your current phone isn't that bad. Maybe you will end up liking your current phone and not want to get a new one. Who knows? I doubt that though... as the phones you get after the first one are pretty cool. That's not to say the first one you get isn't terrible... there are just more features on ones you will get later. I'm sure you will like yours just fine," says my dad.
"Well, it was nice talking with you Dad, but I really have to start my homework. It's... 17:30," I say checking the time, "Mom will get mad at me if I started it 30 minutes late."
"Whoa! It's already 17:30?! Go do your homework!" says my dad, in a dad-like tone.
You were talking too much! I want to say, but I know I shouldn't anger my dad. That would be rude.
I go upstairs and do my homework. Somehow I finish most of it in 30 minutes. Great, mom will not suspect that I didn't start my homework late. I just have to hope dad doesn't bring it up. I hope not, as it was his fault in the first place.
Nothing really interesting happens after that. During the second half of my free time, which was split into two parts, I check out my phone. It does in fact seem pretty simple, but I can take pictures and talk to other people, which I couldn't do before. Also I can connect it with my holo-watch, as doctor Jensen said. I figured out how to that by looking at the guide book she gave me.
The next day I have school. Waking up, I am slightly tired. It took me a while to fall asleep as a lot was on my mind.
When I wake up it is 8, the time my holo-watch wakes me up. School is at 9:45 so I have plenty of time to get ready.
After I have gotten almost all ready for school, I go down for breakfast. Unlike dinner, the entire family doesn't always eat at the same time due to schedule differences.
Today my brother, Mom, and I are all eating breakfast at the same time. Dad has already left for work.
I eat my healthy breakfast without haste. I still have plenty of time before I have to leave, so it doesn't matter how long it takes me to eat. Well... it does if I'm still eating by the time I usually leave or by the time school starts. I really doubt it will take me that long though.
At 9, I am wondering if I should ride my bike to school or take the bus. If I ride my bike, I have to ride it back home. If I take the bus, I have to ride the bus back home. I decide to take the bus so I will most likely have the chance to talk to Alexandra before school starts.
I wait for the bus at the bus stop closest to my home. I don't have to walk far, like most people. The bus stops were placed so we wouldn't have to walk far to get to them.
Once I get to school, I see my friend Alexandra.
"Hi Alexandra!" I call to her.
"Hi Rin," she responds as I go over to her.
"Guess what? I got a phone yesterday!" I say in excitement.
"That's cool," she replies.
"Do we have break at the same time at any point today? I could show you it... Are we allowed to use our phones during break?" I ask.
"At the beginning of the year we the teachers told us we were only allowed to use phones during break, remember?" she asks me.
"Oh right. Let's compare our breaks," I say.
We both activate our holo-watches and look at our schedules.
"We both have a break near the end of the school day at 3:50 to 4..." she says.
"Ok, I will show you my phone then," I say.
"When did you get your phone?" she asks me.
"Yesterday at my doctor's appointment. I'm sure you will get yours soon. When's your next doctor's appointment?" I ask.
"It's this Saturday. Do you think I will get it then?" she asks.
"There is a good chance of it. Even if you don't, I'm sure you will get it soon after," I tell her.
"I see, so I should get it soon. That's good," she says.
"Oh, class starts soon. I have language arts first," I say.
I walk to language arts as Alexandra walks to her first class.
I am happy when it finally is 3:50 as I can show Alexandra my phone. I haven't checked all the features yet myself, so there will be some that I haven't seen yet.
We meet in the courtyard of our school.
"I'm over here Alexandra!" I call to her.
She comes over.
"Have you seen all the features yourself?" she asks me.
"No, not yet," I say.
"Oh, ok," she says.
I show her the features and after I go to my last class of today, technology.
After I get on the bus to go home. While on the bus, I see my friend and neighbor, Lily.
"Hi Lily," I say to her.
"Hi," she says looking up from a phone.
"You have a phone, right? Well I guess I can tell as your holding one. Anyway, I got a phone yesterday," I say.
"Cool, what's your number?" she asks me.
"My... number?" I say in confusion.
"Your phone number. Do you know what it is?" she asks me.
"No... How do I figure out what it is?" I ask her.
"Let me show you," she says.
I take out my phone for her to show me.
She goes through the steps with me on how to figure out what it is.
"That's easy enough," I say.
"Keep that up," she says.
She does something on her phone and then a get a message.
"That's my number. Add it to your contacts if you want," she says.
"Ok," I say, adding the number to my contacts list.
"Message me when you want. You can ask me how to do some things if the guide book is confusing," she says.
"Ok," I say.
The rest of the bus ride home we talk about being 13.
Throughout the week, I feel like a lot has changed. I have been messaging Lily a lot since I don't know if any of my other friends have a phone yet. I feel like my homework has gotten easier. Maybe I've just been doing it faster.
Before I know it, it is already Saturday and I have my doctor's appointment today. After school lets out, I talk to Alexandra and Lily about going clothes shopping tomorrow.
"Are you two free tomorrow to go clothes shopping?" I ask.
"I probably will be," says Alexandra.
"I'll message you tomorrow," says Lily.
"I'll call you on your home phone if I'm free," says Alexandra.
"I haven't bought new clothes in a while... on Day 7 I've been wearing the same clothes pretty much. They are getting tight now though," I say.
On days when someone doesn't have work or school, they are free to wear what they want. On other days they have to wear their work or school uniform.
"I think a new clothes store opened up somewhere. I hear it's only open on the weekends," says Lily.
"Really?" I say.
"Yeah. I hear it has some nice clothes. A lot of the latest trends are there from what I've heard." She says.
Lily is good at finding clothes that people like right now, so I like shopping with her. Not only that but she's good at finding things that look good on people.
"That's nice," I say.
"I'll make sure to find something that looks good on both of you. Don't worry it will be stylish as well. If you don't like it, you can just tell me," she says.
Lily is like a big sister to me. She would help me whenever I needed it. She was someone I depended on a little. She didn't seemed to mind, so I didn't feel that bad asking her for help or to do something for me. She always seemed happy to help.
"Ok," I say.
"Alright. I like fancier looking clothes. Not too fancy," says Alexandra.
Alexandra is a girl who likes to look pretty. Not only that but she is careful in what she does. When she is going to do something, she carefully thinks it through. She doesn't usually tell people what might happen if they do something. She will only tell them if they are a close friend or she could get affected by what they do.
An example of this is when somebody was thinking of pulling a prank on the teacher. She didn't say anything as it would not affect her. Another time in the same year, when we were 6, a kid was thinking of stealing some of the electronics from the class. Alexandra said something because it could affect her.
Lily seems like an older sister to me while Alexandra seems like a careful girl who is interested in lots of things.
"I have to go to my doctor's appointment now," says Alexandra.
I check my holo-watch without activating it. Looking at the time—all that is shown just by looking at it—I see it is 14:15
"I should get going to my doctor's appointment today as well. I'll see you both of you tomorrow, hopefully," I say.
"Bye Rin. I'll call you. Why don't we go the same way to the hospital? There's only one hospital in this community, so we are both going to the same one," says Alexandra.
"Bye. I'll see you tomorrow, Rin. Bye Alexandra. If not I'll see both of you on Monday for sure," says Lily.
"Bye Lily," I say going with Alexandra to the bus stop.
"When is your doctor's appointment?" I ask Alexandra as we wait for the bus.
"At 14:45," she tells me.
"Then it's at the same time as mine," I say.
"There's the bus," I say.
We both get on the bus and take two empty seats. We don't talk much on the bus as there doesn't seem to be much to talk about.
Eventually, we arrive at the hospital.
We both scan our holo-watches when we walk in and go different directions.
When I get to the waiting room, I luckily don't have to wait long.
My doctor's appointment is pretty much the same as the previous ones. Dr. Jensen runs tests on me. Some of them involve injections while some others are based on what I will do with my future.
"Rin," she says at one point, "Your schedule in school is going to change soon. You will have some classes to do with what you want to be along with most of your regular classes. Don't worry, this happens to everyone."
"Ok," I reply.
She looks at her holo-watch and then says, "It looks like we are out of time. Come back next week on the same day. Just come until 16:45. Oh and make sure to bring your family with. I'll notify them."
"Could you do another time? I have homework at 17," I say.
"Well then, come Day 7 from 14:30 to 16:30," she tells me.
"Tomorrow or another day 7?" I ask.
"Not tomorrow but the day 7 after that," she says.
"That works for me," I say.
AN: So that was chapter 4!
So next week I'm going to camp, so I might not post a chapter next week. I am bringing my laptop with, but we have to go to bed by a certain time and I got Osu! on Tuesday (I'm probably going to be doing alot of that before I have to go to bed...). So I plan on working on chapter 5 some before I go to camp so I will have less to work on when I'm at camp.
Chapter word count: 2936
Total word count up until this chapter(not including AN): 8731
So... um... bye. Look forward to the next chapter...
And no, each chapter isn't going to have more words than the previous one. The next chapter will probably have less words... I have plans for it. It just happened to be that each chapter had more words than the previous one so far.
