Chapter | 9
This would be the first time Alina ever walked alone in Gotham. She had been holed up in her apartment for so long, she was about to become crazy.
And it was hilarious, too. The time she decided to step out, she went out at midnight. She knew it wasn't safe, but she had no care. She just needed fresh air and maybe some kebabs.
Cars and motorcycles bypassed the area loudly, splashing water everytwhere. Some of her clothes got wet, but she ignored it. This is a dangerous area of Gotham, and she knew it.
She tightened her trench coat around her, and let her hair down. Rolling her eyes at the random catcalls, she kept walking with her head high. Most of the restaurants were closed, but she did spot some bars.
Deciding to step into one, she removed her coat, that left her in a black turtleneck that itched, and a set of black pants and boots.
The bell chimed as she entered one of the bars, the door sliding loudly against the floor. The bar was dim lit, and it was almost vacant, with only three people inside. A growsy looking bartender, and two people playing billiard.
A thick ball of smoke curled in the air, and she curled her nose in disgust.
"What will you have, beautiful?" The bartender smiled sickeningly at her, and she raised her brows, eyes gazing over the array of drinks neatly displayed on the shelves behind the counter. She yearned for something hard, but remembering that she's still underage and that American laws differentiated from Valencian ones, she settled for a harmless drink.
"Coke and lemon."
After a few minutes and more than a glass of coke, she slammed a hundred dollar bill and walked out. The chilly air welcomed her again, and was about to put her coat on, when she heard a shrilling scream in the air.
"Help! Please, anyone!"
It was a girl. Alina dropped her coat, her heart accelerating. Her breaths became short, and she started shaking wildly. "Calm down." She snapped to herself. This wasn't happening to her. The girl's screams reached out to her, clawing at Alina's deepest memories, bringing an awful reaction. If only it was ever that easy to calm the hell down.
"No, no! Please, no!" The same girl wailed loudly. Alina could hear it clearly. The sound came from the alley next to hers.
Alina took a deep, long breath and decided to interfere. She ignored her erratic heartbeat and searched for the source of the scream.
To her surprise, the girl was being held down by two, burly men. She let out a loud gasp, recognizing the victim. Curly hair, dark skin, long and slim body; it was none other than her own classmate, Olivia. She screamed repeatedly as the men tried to hurt her, clawing their hands at her. She was helpless.
"Get away from her." Cold and stern, Alina stepped into the hallway, hands in her pockets. The two men shifted their attention over to her, before bursting out laughing.
"We might do just the same to you, Princess." One of the men stepped forward, the other letting go of Olivia loudly, her body thumping to the ground. "Alina, no!" She groaned, her tone filled with pain.
To her surprise, she watched in astonishment as the princess lunged over to the men, sliding to the side and threw a straight kick to his leg, the sound of bones cracking resonated through the air. He yelled in pain, as the other man tried to slam his body into hers, but she slid away just in time.
She caught his arm and threw him into the air, against the wall. He screamed in agony, as the other stood up again to lunge at her.
"You fucking bitch!"
Alina gritted her teeth and kicked him once again, and reached over to his neck, her hand grasping it hardly. He started choking and shaking in her grasp, and she let go soon afterwards. His body slammed to the ground.
He got up, and breathed out shakily, "Who the hell are you?" He spat out, standing up groggily, trying to wake his friend up. But he did not. He ran out of there is seconds, scared to his bones; leaving his partner in crime behind.
Olivia ran towards Alina and hugged her, tears in her eyes. "How? How did you do that? That was extraordinary!"
"You should go. And do not speak about this to anyone. I mean it. "
"I can keep my word. Are you going to be okay?" Olivia asks softly. Alina nods. Olivia thanked her profusely before running away.
Hands in her pockets, she walked over to where the other criminal was laying. He had his eyes closed, and Alina's heart jumped at the possibily that he could be dead. She crunched down to check his pulse, and let out a relieved sigh as she found one, barely beating.
"Tsk." She clicked her tongue. She really wasn't in a mood to fight. Hell, she hadn't fought anyone in over a year. And she couldn't risk anyone seeing her.
She heard a loud thud from behind her. She turned around, standing up, and frowned at the sight before her.
A man, or boy, stood tall. Wearing the infamous black cape, and the legendary eye mask.
The famous vigilante himself, Robin.
She couldn't see his face clearly, the street lights were dim, hiding his face to her imagination. She wasn't surprised; she grew up hearing about Batman and his legendary partner.
"You fight quite well. Too well." He murmurs, tilting his head, his deep voice resonating through the alley.
"I'll take that as a compliment, I guess."
"Well, next time, try not to steal my job." He chuckles, and in the blink of an eye, followed by a whisking of his cape, he was gone.
"I won't. " Alina muttered, walking back to the streets, picking up her dirty coat that she had left before. She dusted it, but as soon as she saw the dirt on it, she sighed and threw it into a nearby bin. She wiped her face with her sleeve, and ran her fingers through her hair. What a fight that was.
She'd better be careful, next time. She can't risk herself being seen.
Looking down to the palm of her hands, she noticed they had stopped shaking. She slid them into her pockets, and continued walking in the direction of Gotham Prep.
Little did she know, Robin kept watching her from above.
