"Don't thaw the light in your eyes."

"There has never been one."

THREE YEARS LATER

~

The castle of Valencia was one of the most distinctive among those in Europe. It's cream walls, rose gardens, statues and gargoyles, shimmering fountains, gravel walkways, it seemed as if it came out of a fairytale.

But it was far from a fairytale.

Two years ago, chaos had erupted. Two years ago, the Royal Family had been broken. This time, permanently.

Nobody really knows what happened; but there was one person that saw it all:

Taliana Vanderbilt.

At exactly three in the morning, she woke up, hearing noises from the castle's halls.

She followed the noises, to end up in the throne room; and saw a sight she'd never thought would ever happen.

Alina Vanderbilt, sobbing, her entire body shaking, holding her mother and father's lifeless bodies.

Blood surrounded the three of them. One of the windows had been broken, next to the throne.

"They-they killed them.. In front of me!" The Princess sobbed as she held her father's body.

A few weeks after the distraught event, her little brother, Prince Michael, went missing.

And that was it. Ever since that horrid day, nobody's heard about the her anymore. It's almost as if it was all a twisted fairytale.

[ A L I N A ]

I stare at the painting longer than I should've.

My mother, dressed in red, a golden crown shimmering on top of her neatly styled bun, standing next to my father. She was smiling, she was happy. Something I've never seen.

Seeing Mum's portrait, it reminded me of myself. Same nose, same lips, but I certainly inherited Dad's eyes.

I stand up, cover the large painting with the thin black tissue. I don't want to be reminded of them. My toes curls around the soft red carpet, as I let myself fall into the sofa behind me.

This was my Father's office; a place full of mysteries, mysteries that will never be solved, as the answers were buried along with him.

At least I know one of his secrets, more precisely my Mother's. And it all happened years ago.

Talia Al-Ghul, my mother's old friend, had visited my parents, in order to congratulate them on the birth of their second child.

Only, something else happened.

Something that never should've happened.

- TWENTY TWO YEARS AGO -

The young brown haired woman stared at the small glass tube in between her fingers. She grasped it tightly, her heartbeat pacing, unable to set her mind clear. It was her decision, she knew it.

"I don't understand why we should do this, Talia." Leila mutters as she put the glass down onto the desk, staring at her friend, while holding her newborn dearly.

"Alina will be a lucky girl. She'll be powerful, more than what meets the eye." Talia smiled as she eyed the sleeping baby. "And most importantly, she will survive. Poor child, having deformed lungs. She cannot survive, without this."

"There must be another way, I'm sure. We can call doctors, plan a surgery-"

"Do you want her to heal completely?" Talia snaps, and Leila pressed the baby closer to her, in instinct.
"Will this harm her?" She murmurs, glancing at the child. Such innocence.

"Yes, yes it will. She'll suffer." Leila kisses the baby's forehead as she slowly placed her into the crib.

"But think about it. This shall transform her into a powerful being. She'll have so much power. Power flowing in her blood. She'll be invincible. Something people have never seen before." Talia smiles as she took a few steps towards the Queen, trying to convince her.

"And all of that will only be possible once I inject this powerful poison into her blood." She continues, holding a syringe, her gaze drifting towards the peacefully sleeping baby.

-

"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, LEILA?!" Thomas's powerful voice boomed towards the throne room, as soon as the doors banged open.

Leila dropped her book, her heartbeat fastening, her fingers trembling. She knew this was coming. There was no way she'd escape her husband's rage.

"What did you do to our daughter?!" Thomas's voice trembled, his fury evident, his fingers grasping her neck tightly, shaking his wife's body forcefully.

"I did it to save her." Leila whispers in between breaths, her fingers desperately trying to break her husband's hold.

Thomas released her, as she fell onto the floor, coughing, gasping for air. His calloused fingers ran through his hair, as tears slowly prickled his eyes.

His daughter. Ruined by her own mother.

Leila stood up, her head high, hatred clear in those brown eyes of hers.

"I did what's best for her! Don't you see?! If I haven't done it, she'll be useless! Useless like me!" She shouts, looking straight into the King's eyes.

"There was no other way!"

Before she knew it, she was laying on the cold marble, her fingers instantly brushed against her left cheek, where a red mark slowly appeared.

"How dare you lay a hand on me?!" She screams, tears flowing freely.

"The question is, how dare you lay a hand on her? She's a baby! Are you that twisted? You'll regret this, Leila. You will." Thomas spat, turning around, leaving the room.

Maids rushed in, panicked expressions clear on their faces, as they tried to help their Queen. "Don't." Leila mutters, pointing at the maid threateningly, slowly standing up, as she winces from the pain.

"I don't regret it. I never will. Because she wouldn't have survived."

So.. now you know. All this time, it was her. Damian could've saved her, if only she opened up to him.

But hey, it's difficult to open up to someone if you have a traumatic past.
