Prologue

Have you ever felt like you were just another dragon living in the world? No special destiny waiting for you, no prophecy to come true under your actions?

That's how Breaker felt his entire life, until now.

The young SeaWing wasn't just about to give up. Not yet. He had to deliver the message.

He had to win.

But this story isn't about him.

Life was a game worth winning, and entry into the Order was all this SeaWing dragonet had ever wanted.

He raced down jagged tunnels, turning and twisting. They seemed to have been carved endlessly and mindlessly, with no purpose but to confuse the traveler into the point of pure insanity. A dim torch lit the hallway here and there, but it didn't matter to the SeaWing, he could see almost perfectly in the dark, especially with his glowing spots that lined his body, which were, at the moment, blinking like crazy.

The small dragonet sped along the tunnels as fast as his tiny legs would go, his heart beating as fast as a hummingbird's wings and his mind running through the words he had read over and over again.

She was coming.

There was no time to lose.

Bursting into a larger cavern, this one lit by even more torches, some with bright blue fire, probably to match the faint glow of the eyes staring at him from the center of the room.

Stalactites hung from the ceiling in jumbled groups, giving you the eerie feeling that one could drop at any moment and crush you to a squashed pile of bones and blood.

Breaker started his great, proud strut into the dark room, his green-blue head held high. Even though his tingling nerves desperately wanted to jump out of his slick, scaly body, he showed no sign of it as he arrived face to face with a tall, dark dragon.

The colossal dragon eyed him in disgust, a scowl shown upon his dark grey snout.

This dragon stared at him, his mane of white-blue horns rattling as he shook his majestic head in disregard and started to turn in the other direction, saying nothing.

"Wait, sir. Please, I have important news."

The large dragon swiveled his terrible but beautiful head around to lock eyes with the small dragonet. His white teardrop scales that lay just behind his eyes shown bright, even in the dim torchlight.

He chuckled in dark amusement, his glowing blue eyes seemed to dim slightly. "You? Important news? How convincing."

A multitude of dragons stepped out of the shadows, surrounding Breaker in an encasing of golden eyes, all laughing with the dark dragon, staring right at the small dragonet. He started to shrink down, hiding from the claustrophobic feeling that tingled all about him; but then the thought of himself thrown out of the caves, or worse, entered his small mind and he straightened back up with new confidence.

"No, sir! It's about the queen!" he tried, lifting his scaly SeaWing head into the musty cold air.

A black talon lifted up, silencing the crowd of various dragons, old and young, large and small, all with deep, menacing golden eyes.

The Order.

The massive, dark dragon bent down, a new expression laid before Breaker's green eyes, one of surprise, with the slightest sliver of hope.

"Repeat. Your. Statement."

"Sir... The queen... It's about the queen," the blue dragonet started to shake against his will. He had to be strong.

He couldn't fail.

"What about the queen?" the dark dragon demanded, his talons digging into the solid stone ground in anxious annoyance.

"She... She's coming to Jade Mountain."

The dark dragon shot up in a jolt, eyes wide.

"And who told you?" The massive dragon asked, towering over the scanty dragonet.

Breaker stood tall again, chest puffed out and a grin upon his scaly face. "No one. I found out myself."

The large, dark dragon stiffened. "Of all the possible futures... Why this one? Ugh, no matter. Breaker, you have exceeded my expectations-"

The SeaWing dragonet started to get excited, adrenaline pumped through his veins, his eyes widened, his gills stood tight.

"-Would you like to become part of my Order?"

This was it, the moment of his life, the one he'd been waiting for. The blank expressions on the faces of the dragons around him reminded him that he would probably have to learn to be like that, like them.

"Oh, yes please, yes sir!" Breaker squealed in excitement.

"Right then, Breaker, come closer," the dark dragon beckoned for him to move in, summoning him with a black grey talon. The dragonet obeyed with gleeful pleasure. "Now, look into my eyes... That's right. Watch them, focus all of your thoughts, memories, your life, into those eyes... And Breaker? I'm sorry, because things must be sacrificed for the greater good. So, say goodbye to your soul."

The moment he said "soul", that's the moment Breaker wanted to follow his given name and break out of the trance the glowing blue eyes had put him in. He wanted to back out of the deal, he hadn't signed up for this... Had he?

But he couldn't break free.

The SeaWing dragonet had already followed the large dragon's orders, he had already put all of his effort into focusing his life onto those bright blue eyes of beauty.

His blood ran cold, he suddenly didn't feel the same. He was Breaker, but he had no purpose, no desire, no thought, no soul.

He stared into the now dimer blue eyes of the massive dragon, and in their reflection, saw brilliant golden eyes staring right back at him.

The large dragon took in a long deep breath and flicked his head toward the left.

Breaker, the new Breaker, the soulless Breaker, walked with a blank expression to his new spot in the Order.

Then the dark dragon stomped his foot on a notch in the stone floor. A pillar of rock rose up with the massive figure of the dark dragon standing majestically upon it. He stared down at the dozens of dragons of all sizes and tribes below him, glowering over them with triumphant glory.

"Now, about the queen..."
