4 - Home Sick

Vienna's P.O.V.

I sat in class twiddling my thumbs. I've been placed in the freshman's class and all this work is way to easy.

I thought about home.

I kind of missed it.

I mean, I didn't want to go on this stupid trip anyway, just because mamma wanted to go away. She was tired - I get it. 9 children, the farm, and with papa gone the work doubled.

It just so happened that Aunt Siena was fine about looking after everyone.

Apart from me.

I don't know why she hated me - but she never hid it. If I stayed with her, or at home, I would have had her drumming in my ears 24/7 about how I'm 'the child sent from hell' and how I 'should have never been born'. And that was on a good day.

I do miss it though.

The family I've been placed with are okay, although I tend to stay in my room till meal times.
They took me to the Grand Canyon over the weekend. We got to meet the Red Indians and it was quite fun.

I finished my work before everyone, the teacher was eyeing me.

"Miss De'Lange?" I heard a stern voice. I sat up in my chair.

"Yes M'aam" I replied, everyone started giggling.

"We say miss here." She sounded quite stern, I don't know why. "Have you finished the work?".

"Uhh, yes miss." I replied.

"Then why are you still sat there? Get up and bring it over!" She was almost shouting.

I just froze. I felt the whole class stare at me. I didn't move.

"I can tell you're going to be trouble! Principles Office NOW!" She was red in anger.

I got out of my chair, slung my rucksack over my shoulder, and proceeded to walk out the door.

"You need a slip!!" She was still shouting at me. I didn't want to turn around as there were already tears in my eyes. "De'Lange! You need this slip to go the the Principal! Take it!"

I turned around. There was a boy looking at me. -- the same boy that spoke to me earlier.

He had a sorrowful look, almost sympathetic. I looked at him and smiled quickly before my attention was drawn back to the mad dinosaur that paced around the room.

"How was I meant to know that miss?" I came across quite stern myself. "Here! And you will not answer back to me!" She pushed the slip into my hand.

"Get out!" - it wasn't the first time I'd heard that in a while.

I stepped out of the classroom.

Worst first day ever.
