11 - Mr Davis
Lia's P.O.V
The next morning, we arrived at the Davis household at 7:30am.
I was looking forward to a family style breakfast, but I couldn't help thinking we should go straight to mom.
We arrived at the house and everything was quiet. The house was pretty.
It sat semi detached upon a row of 3 and was decorated to look like an old Victorian house, with wooden beams and decorated glass windows.
All the lights were off.
As it was cold, I told Vincent to wait in the car till the door was open.
He'd barely slept and I didn't want him getting ill too.
I walked up to the painted blue door and knocked it a few times.
A sleepy Mrs. Davis answered.
"Good morning. Sorry, I didn't notice the time. Come in!"
She tried to sound enthusiastic over the morning croaks.
I signalled Vincent to get out the car.
"I don't think we said a time Mrs. Davis. We're a little early."
She scanned the front room and removed the piles of paper from the sofa.
"It's fine, I needed to get up anyway. I have to see Harry at 8."
I was guessing Harry is Mr. Davis.
"Did he not come home?" I asked trying not to sound intrusive.
Vincent walked through the door and closed it behind him.
"No, he was kept back. They wanted to make extra sure that he wouldn't do it again."
She picked up an extra large pile of papers and was struggling to find space to place them.
"Here, let me help." I said, about to lift the papers from her so she could clear some space.
"No, no, it's fine." She was quick to answer.
"Just move that ash tray and I'll pop it there."
I picked up the ask tray and moved it to the side and she laid the heavy pile of papers on top.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so sharp. They're divorce papers..." she trailed off.
"Oh... I'm sorry."
She rubbed a scar on her neck.
"It's not the first time he's done this and with Vienna here now, I don't want her to get dragged into it."
"Vienna's not staying forever..."
I tried to change her train of thought. I don't think she wants to leave him, they've been together so long.
She looked at me and smiled, and then turned her head to Vincent.
"How are you love?"
"I'm okay, I guess." He said shrugging his shoulders.
"He has a rough night." I added.
Vienna appeared at the top of the stairs.
Not saying a word, she came down with a book and set herself down in the arm chair. She looked up and smiled at everyone before opening it and scanning the pages.
"Good morning Vienna." Mrs. Davis said in a perked up voice.
"Good morning."
She continued reading.
"Right, who wants what?" Mrs. Davis said standing up and walking towards the kitchen.
"Tea, coffee, cakes, porridge?"
"I'll have a tea please Mrs. Davis." It seemed like I was the only one talking today.
"Call me Jess! Honestly, same for you Vienna. You've been here long enough."
"Vin?"
"I'm not hungry." He said in a sorrowful voice.
"He'll have tea too then."
Vienna looked up. "Could I have some porridge please Jess?" She smiled as she said it.
"Certainly young lady."
She turned the radio on as she slipped out to the kitchen.
I put my hand on Vincent's lap and turned my head to look at Vienna.
She was staring at me.
She suddenly realised and looked back down at her book.
"Hey Vienna."
I got her attention back again.
"Vin was wondering.... ouch!"
He hit me and laughed.
Vienna got the gist of what I was going to say and laughed along too.
She smiled at me. A little differently this time. I looked away.
Jess walked in with a tray of drinks.
"Porridge is just on the hob. Won't be long."
She sat on the sofa next to Vienna and started chatting away.
