Chapter 4

"You're gonna be ok, you're gonna be ok. I command you to be ok!" I heard someone say, their tears spilling out onto my face.
My vision was still black, but all my other senses were still working perfectly. I could feel the squishy moss beneath me.
"Hurricane?" I croaked. "Is that you?"
"Yes. I'm right here. Can you hear me?"
"I can hear you, but I can't see you. Why is it so dark?
"It- it's not dark. We're back in our cave, with all the lanterns on."
"I want rain. Make it rain." I said, remembering my enchantment.
"What are you talking about?" Hurricane asked me. I could feel his confusion from his mind.
Is she ok? Is she talking to me? Maybe she wants me to enchant it to rain in the cave. But what about my soul? What about her soul? Is it safe? Did the skywing do something to her?
"I forgot I had enchanted my bed." I said weakly.
The bed obliged, raining cold, thick drops.
"Why?"
"I miss my home." I said simply.
"Please, please, don't die on me. You've been out for five days already. Please DreamCatcher, I love you more than anyone in the world."
"I know you do." And with that, I passed out.
"Hello darling!" DeathBringer said cheerfully. "Care to join me this evening at the dance?"
Glory rolled her eyes. "Don't call me darling. I thought I told you!"
"But will you? Pleeeaaaseee?"
"It's the first rainwing rescue mission victory dance we'll have. Of course, the queen will have to go with a reasonable date. So that leaves you out."
"Hey! I am a reasonable date! I'm handsome, allknowing, and amazing at absolutely everything I do. How is that not reasonable?"
"You're the one who issued the rainwing imprisonment."
"I didn't! We talked about this. Queen BattleWinner and MasterMind issued that, and I just had to follow the queen's orders. Also, I helped with the rescue mission."
"MAYBE you can come. You just have to stay at least six feet away from me at all times."
"Ha ha! You DO want me there!"
"No I do NOT, frog-brain. I just feel bad for your sad and adorable face."
"Come on, let's get ready. Also, I have something for you when we get there."
Glory looked skeptical. "Uh huh..."
They got ready. Pretty soon, they were off to the center of the village for the Dance.
Once they got there though, everyone's eyes were on them. Following them no matter where they went, or what they were doing.
"Can we go somewhere, I don't know, private?" DeathBringer asked Glory.
"There is nowhere private here. Sure, the rainwings are attentive to little details, but a bit too attentive if you ask me. Plus, the fact that they have camouflage scales doesn't help me spot them when I want privacy."
"Ok then, that's a no. How about somewhere where the rainwings generally don't want to go?"
"Well, they don't tend to go to the desert, so maybe through the tunnel?"
"Sure, we can go there."
They left for the tunnel. Once there, DeathBringer took the lead to find a nice, cozy spot by the hole.
"This kind of reminds me of the little pond at the entrance to the tunnel." Glory said once DeathBringer chose a tiny beach beside an oasis.
"Now, or before we fixed it?"
"Now."
"Good, because that was the feeling I was going for."
"Now why did you bring me here?"
"You'll see..."
He pulled a small box out of the pouch Glory had given him for his hatching day.
"I don't know if this is proper, but Glory?"
"Yes?"
"Will you be my mate? I've loved you for a long time now, and I feel like I want to be with you."
"Of course! I love you too, DeathBringer."
"AWWWW! You're so cute!" Multiple voices from the sand said.
"ARRRG! WILL YOU EVER LEAVE ME ALONE?" Glory yelled at the seemingly empty space.
Silence.
"Nice to know you'll never need them again, now that I have an excuse to be wherever you are." DeathBringer joked.
Glory rolled her eyes. "That does not mean you can sleep on my platform every night, goofball."
"Of course it does! I am now you husband, so therefore I am your king. And that also means we need to have heirs for the throne."
"Oh, your head's gotten a bit too big there, idiot. We're not having dragonets for a LONG time."
"Oh really?"
"Don't go there, or I will become the assasin here, mister."
"Fine... but I can still tickle you!" He said as he launched his mini attack.
"Stop!" Glory said between giggles. "How is this even related to your original topic?"
"I dunno, I just feel like tickling you!"
They stopped to take a breath.
"I love you." Glory said.
"I love you." DeathBringer said at the same time.
"Wake up, DreamCatcher." I heard someone say. "Wake up, your mum is here."
"Mom?" I said. "Why are you here?"
"To bring you home. It's not safe for you here anymore."
I bolted up. "No! I want to stay! Let me stay, please! It's definitely safe! It was just Cloud who attacked me, not the whole mountain!"
"I thought you wanted to leave!"
"I did before, but now I don't. This is the best thing that's ever happened to me, and I don't want to let it go. Like it or not, I'm staying."
She stamped her foot. "Fine. But if anything happens, you're coming right back to the rainforest where I can keep my eye on you."
"You mean Mangrove's eye. He's the one who raised me. Not you, not dad, Mangrove. You always dumped me on him when you were 'busy' but it was really just sitting around and talking to one subject every two hours. If that's busy, I'm a scavenger." I shot back.
"I didn't mean it that way! I was busy, it was just a project your dad and I were working on. Nobody was supposed to know about it."
"Then what was this said 'project' you were working on for four years?"
"Well..."
"Tell me! I need to know!"
"It's a secret! You're only supposed to know once we're done."
"Fine. Don't tell me. But I will know, whether you like it or not. Got that?"
She stumbled. Ever so slightly, but I saw it. Then, she held herself up high and without a backward glance, took off down the tunnel.
"We can talk about this later, ok?" Tsunami said. "Clay and I have some classes to teach."
So they left, leaving me, Hurricane and Blizzard alone again.
"What happened while I was out?" I asked them.
"Well, they locked Cloud in a cave. Blizzard and I came in a lot to see you. Your mum came, obviously. Other than that, nothing happened except everybody worrying about you. Did anybody dreamvisit you?"
"No, but I had a really weird dream. It was a vision but-"
"Whoah, whoah, whoah. Stop right there. Since when do you have visions? I thought it was just mind reading!"
"As I was going to say, it wasn't a vision of the future, it was from the past. It was when my dad proposed to my mom. I- I think someone's trying to remind me that my parents are good dragons, and that they're doing what they think is right."
"You got all that from a proposal?" Hurricane asked. "And how do you know it was a vision, not a memory?"
I rolled my eyes. "Yes, you idiot, I got that from a proposal. I think someone sent that vision to me. I mean, how could I remember my dad proposing if my egg didn't even exist?"
"I'm not an idiot! But who do you think sent the vision to you? I mean, it's not your brain sending it."
"We could enchant something." I said.
"NO!" Blizzard blurted. "Just... no. What about our souls? What about all the dragons that will suffer if we loose them?"
"Since when are you so worried about our souls? We barely cast. Plus, didn't professor Turtle prove that our magic didn't eat our soul, it just tricked us into thinking killing was the right thing to do? Plus we can have soul spells. We can have scrolls like DarkStalker had, but enchanted so that only the dragon who was born with the magic can use it. We can be smarter than all the others." I said. "We can control it."
"We cannot try to control it, or bad things will happen. DarkStalker tried, and look where it got him! He's gone. Just because he used it too much. We have to be careful, or we'll end up like him." He said.
"We are being careful! And we won't ever end up like him! I can prove it to you! Look," I said, picking up the closest item I could find. It happened to be a rock. "Turn into a soul reader like DarkStalker's, able to see how good a dragon is. Black sand for good, white sand for bad. Make it an hourglass."
The rock obliged, leaving me with an hourglass the size of my talon, a perfect balance of white and black sand. I pointed it at myself.
"See, look! I'm perfectly fi-" I stopped, seeing the amount of white sand on the bottom. It was three quarters filled. Too much. "Wha- what? But I never did anything bad! I never murdered anyone! I never tried to control anybody!"
But then, I remembered the night.
It was the council night with the icewings, meaning queen Snowfall would send thirty icewings to the rainforest to talk to my mom about Chameleon. (They were holding him captive because he had murdered Snowfall's mate) I was in the corner, playing with my scavenger dolls, made of flower petals and multiple types of wood.
The wing of icewings landed heavily on the new council platform, scattering my toys. One with three long scars trailing down her face looked down her snout at me and snorted in disgust. She stomped on my tail, making me cry out in pain. She sneered at me, reminding me once again, that I was useless background noise and nothing more.
"Hello, icewings." Mom said, attempting to look regal but failing, with the icewings being at least seven years older than her. "Sit down."
She gestured at the long table.
"First, we need that sniveling dragonet and it's toys out of here." The icewing who had stomped on my tail said.
"Sorry, but she's my dragonet, and I need to keep my eye on her, she tends to cause a ruckus when I'm not around."
"Then make sure it stays very quiet, or it will need to go."
I stopped listening to take in the details of the dragons' face, picking out all the little bits and pieces that I would have missed if I hadn't looked. Like those tiny ice-blue gemstone strings wrapped around her horns and tail, or the way her eyes shifted from ocean blue to black when she moved. How she held herself, stiff and guarded, like someone was going to attack her any second. The necklace with one silver circle hanging from it like a ring.
I tossed my head, removing myself from my trance.
Just in time, because another dragon landed on the platform.
"The defective rainwing is no longer negotiable." He said.
"What? Why?" Mom asked. "What happened?"
"He escaped. We caught him, but not before he stabbed the queen. We're not sure she'll survive. But you," he said, pointing a serrated claw at her. "Are held responsible."
He and the entire wing lunged at her, teeth bared and claws ready.
"NO!" I screamed.
I need to do something! I thought. I wish I was an animus! Maybe I am. If I am, this'll work. I enchant all these icewings to die instantly, but their bodies will disappear and no one except myself will know they were ever there. All the dragons on the continent will never remember them, and Snowfall will just send another wing that won't hurt mom.
It happened, mom no longer surrounded by icewings, no longer screaming. All that was left was a tiny, but deep scratch on her neck, like a bloody necklace.
"Shoot, they're late." She said. "Do you want any fruit while we're waiting?"
I nodded absentmindedly. "Yeah, sure..." And then I forgot everything that happened, my old life leaking back into my brain.
"D- d- dead icew- wings... I killed... my s- soul..." I blubbered.
"What? DreamCatcher speak to me!" Hurricane cried. "Tell me what happened!"
Once I calmed down a bit, I told them everything.
Blizzard's eyes were wide with fear. "This is really, really bad. You're a murderer. You killed an entire wing of dragons. You can't use your power ever again. You might not even be trustworthy."
Then, my teardrop scales were shot with searing pain, knocking me to the ground once again.
Child of the stalker comes to light,
Murderer, friend, and troubled soul
The world might fall beneath her claws,
Or rise with the wisdom of her mind.
To achieve the glory, one must fix the broken heart.
The snake, the storms, and the cloud on the ground
Will either save or destroy the dragon they love most. I rasped.
