Chapter 4

"It was about time!"

Nick couldn't keep his smile back after he picked up Mila from the hospital.

Mila couldn't help rolling her eyes at her stupid brother.

After Ryan's confession, she couldn't get out of there quickly enough.

"I'm breaking up with you, Mila."

Just thinking about that sentence, makes Mila's stomach twist and turn.

It makes her sick to think about his reason. Of course, a small part of her is sad. She has spent almost 6, months with the guy - even though he had spent half of it in a coma. But if she is truly honest with herself, she never felt that spark with Ryan.

Not like the spark she had with Jace.

Hell, she even had one with Peter!

Mila knew it wasn't a relationship which would last. She just thought it was nice having someone to be with, and someone to count on.

"I never liked the guy." Nick continues with a scowl on his face.

She knew Nick never liked Ryan, but she has never asked why. So, therefore, she couldn't keep help herself when she asked, "why?"

He didn't expect her to ask that. He didn't want to hurt her. Nick knew that Ryan had been Mila's rock ever since they moved here one year ago. Even before they got together, they were good friends.

But why stand up for a guy who just broke up with her?

"Okay, I have a confession to make." He starts.

Mila has never liked confessions. They always ended up hurting someone, and she got a feeling that this one is going to sting her.

"You know that in high school Ryan was one of the popular kids. Especially with the ladies." His grip on the wheel tightens, turning his knuckles white.

"Even after you two announced that you were dating, he never turned down an opportunity to flirt."

Mila doesn't know what to say. Yes, she knew that Ryan always had a way with girls, but she thought that it stopped when they got serious.

Nick continues, "I once confessed him about it, although he promised me that it was a weak moment and that he would never do it again. But I kept seeing him with one girl after another."

He takes a deep breath. "Do you remember the day I asked you what you saw in him?"

"Yeah?" Mila answers him.

Mila remembers that day clearly. It was one of the last days of the senior year, and she was under a lot of stress with exams and all.

She came home and was in a crappy mood when Nick asked her that question. It was a completely random question which came out of nowhere.

Since the day Mila came home and announced her new relationship, Nick had been against it. He thought he had a bad vibe around him, and that he wasn't a good guy.

She remembers saying that Ryan kept her life steady and that she could be with him without thinking about her troubles.

Then she snapped at him for not minding his own business and smacked the door in his head.

"That day I saw Ryan with Amanda," Nick says in a tight voice.

Mila takes a sharp breath. Amanda is Ryan's ex-girlfriend, and you know how those crazy queens there thinks they rule the whole school.

Well, Amanda was one of those.

Amanda hated Mila the minutes she saw she and Ryan talking.

Fortunately for Mila, Amanda is currently located in a mental hospital after she ran after her with a gun on the last day of school.

"You know what Nick, I don't care," Mila says, "I just hope he one day finds someone who is enough for him and doesn't feel the need to get behind her back."

She shakes her head. Right now she wants to move on with her life.

Start from the scratch.

A clean slate. No boyfriend, no crazy ex, no high school drama.

And for once in a very long time, there are no problems in Mila's life.

"I just want to be happy now." She states to her brother.

Nick smiles, "Let's hope."

It felt weird for Mila to be back in the house, after being away for 3, months.

But everything is as she remembers it.

Cold with no life.

The white walls with all the modern paintings on reminds her, that Chelsea doesn't want any family photos up.

The black furniture there barely has been used, remind her of the lack of love and closeness between her family.

There is one thing Mila likes about this place. It is the view. Behind the couch, there is a series of windows, with a view towards the sea.

The rhythm the waves have has always calmed Mila down at the most stressing times.

The beach is her solitude.

Mila walks out on the terrace. It is the place where she spends most of her time. It is a great place to sit and listen to the waves without getting disturbed.

She is just about to walk out when there comes a cold voice, "You're home."

Chelsea is standing in her usual cold demeanour. She has a black pencil skirt on with a white blouse. Her hair is perfectly styled, of course. Not a single piece out of place.

Mila stops in her tracks, "Yeah."

There's an awkward tension, which isn't uncommon.

Not after that night.

"I think I will go to my room," Nick says, breaking the silence.

Chelsea makes her way over to her daughter. "I heard Ryan is awake." She starts.

It doesn't surprise Mila that her mom already knows that he's awake. Chelsea and Sara - Ryan's mom - is very close, since Robert works for Ryan's dad - Louis.

Mila nods her head as an answer. Not wanting to talk or even think about him anymore. She has spent way to much time these past 3, months doing both.

"Then why are you home?" Mila is shocked to hear Chelsea sounding displeased. She thought her mom wanted her home.

Chelsea must have seen her shocked face because she quickly adds. "Not that I don't want you here. I just thought you wanted to spend some time with him, now that he's awake."

Mila gives her a sad smile. "I didn't want to be there, and he didn't want me there either. We broke up."

Chelsea gives her a small nod. "Well okay. Now if you will excuse me, I need to make a phone call." And with that, she walks away, without further questions.

Mila can't help but feel disappointed. She knows that her mom doesn't care about what she does or who she spends her time with.

Not after that night.

Though, she still feels sad. Chelsea can't seem to forgive her mistakes and start to act like a typical mom again.

Mila walks out on the terrace and sits down on the outdoor couch; just watching the sunset.

She thought that when Peter was gone, they could put all their problems aside, and start working as a real family again.

Mila should have known better. They will never go back to the way they were before.

There will always be that elephant in the room, which nobody is willing to discuss.

And that is, what happened that night.

"Visitor for Jeremy Horson."

Jeremy has been in prison for 3, months and not once has he had a visitor.

He makes his way into the visitor room, and he immediately sees who his visitor is.

Jeremy knew that he would come one day, but he didn't think it would be this soon.

He stands out from the rest of the visitors. His new suit practically shines, and even though he is surrounded by convicts who have murdered dozens of people he still radiates power. Even the deadliest and scariest murders in here stay out of his way.

His eyes narrow in on Jeremy and give him a sideway smug.

"Jeremy Horson, we have some unfinished business to discuss."
