Chapter 10: FIIIIIIIIRE! (But, in a Good Way)

A/N: Finally, the Wendigo ending. This is also the longest chapter yet, and it felt way more satisfying to publish. so I may try and write more every time now. This will, unfortunately, further slow down my updates. Enjoy the chapter!

Dean POV

Following the wendigo's trail was the most nerve-wracking thing that Dean had ever done. Knowing that he was walking towards something that was an expert in hunting and killing scared him more than he would like to admit. He had a job to do though, and the knowledge of that was enough to keep him going. (It had always been.)

"How long until we get there?" Percy asked.

"This is the seventh time you've asked that in the last five minutes Percy."

"I'm anxious and impatient. Can you answer my question?"

You forgot annoying. Dean thought. "No, I can't because I don't know the answer. We're following the trail to wherever it is."

"You should've said that the first time." Percy muttered.

"Would you two shut up and stop fighting? Tommy's still in trouble!" Haley said.

"Sorry." Percy said in the fakest voice that Dean had ever heard. (It might not have been fake, but Dean really distrusted Percy.)

"The trail stops here," Sam's voice rang out.

Dean was going to curse, until he looked forward again.

"Right at the creepy abandoned mine track, of course. Because I actually live in a horror movie." Percy stated, eyeing the mine shaft.

Both Winchesters snickered a bit at that, causing Percy to smirk.

"We need to stay in groups, no one person can go in there alone." Sam stated.

"Who's going to be in the pair?"

Dean spoke up, "It'll be me and Haley." He didn't want to partner with Percy, or leave the youngest person there alone.

Percy rose a single eyebrow, but didn't question his judgement. "We'll go around then, see if there's an entrance. If there is, that's where we'll go. It's best to attack on multiple fronts."

The group blinked at her silently for a moment, unsure of what exactly to say. Didn't Sam say that she was a Marine Biology Major?

"Did you work in the military at some point?" Dean asked. It was the only reasonable explanation that he could think of with his shocked mind.

"I was going to after I graduated. I did go to a military-style camp when I was younger though. Apparently I was a 'troubled kid'."

"Percy you got expelled from 90% of the schools you went to. Including a school for troubled kids." Sam scoffed.

Percy shrugged. "Then I got accepted into Stanford."

Sam laughed.

"Get a room you two."

Sam and Percy turned towards Dean, both looking utterly appalled.

"Dude, my soon-to-be-fiancè just died." Sam said.

"He's not my type," Percy said in perfect unison with the youngest Winchester. Then, "You were going to propose?"

Sam nodded and Percy smiled sadly. "She would have said yes."

Sam returned her smile.

At least she cares. Or pretends too. Dean thought. "Let's do this."

Percy nodded. "See you soon."

Percy POV

Percy was approximately fifty-six-percent sure that she wasn't going to see Dean soon. Namely, she was fifty-six-percent sure that she was going to die. (That wasn't unusual for Percy though, and it was only six-percent higher than her on a typical day and forty-four-percent lower than her then.)

"I've had a friend that would have been super useful to have around right now. Fire was his thing," Percy felt a pang in her chest a the thought of Leo, but she pushed it down as quickly as it had come.

"Really?" Sam asked. (Ben looked curious, but had yet to say anything.)

"Yeah, he was pretty great. An expert in mechanics. He once made a holographic table." Percy replied smiling fondly.

"Why don't you talk anymore?" Sam asked.

"He died." (A/N: This is probably going to be the only part of this story that's really even sorta canon-compliant.)

"Oh. Sorry."

Percy shrugged. "It was years ago."

"Still." Sam said.

"It's all good Sam."

"Whatever you say Percy."

Percy was going to respond, something along the lines of her telling the truth, but was interrupted by a sudden crash.

"What was that?" Ben asked.

"Probably just rocks or something," Sam said, looking a bit concerned.

There was a scream.

"I'm going with the 'something else' option." Percy responded before taking off in the direction of the scream.

"Percy," Sam called uselessly. "Well Ben, I guess we're going that way. Sam said turning to his younger companion.

The two went in the direction that their raven-haired accomplice had disappeared in.

Dean POV

Everything went wrong when Dean Winchester entered the mine shaft. It was fine for a few minutes, it always was when everything went wrong, then there was a crash behind him. Dean turned to Haley behind him, telling her that it was just some rocks. The moment he turned back around he heard another crash, then Haley's scream. He didn't even get the chance to turn around before everything went to black.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Dean came back around he was hanging by his wrists from a cavern ceiling, Haley on one side and a mystery boy on the other. He had been captured by the wendigo and death was imminent
"What happened?" Haley asked, sounding a bit dazed.
Dean turned his head towards her, wincing as he did so. As it turned out, being knocked out by a wendigo wasn't very comfortable. "I believe that the wendigo got us."
Haley looked panicked. "We're going to die aren't we?"
Dean forced a smile. "No, no, I'm sure that Sam and Percy are going to save us soon."
Sam POV
There was no way in hell that they were going to be able to get to Dean and Haley in time. For one thing, the biggest thing, he had no clue where they were, and for the other thing, they also had to be weary of the wendigo. All in all, things weren't looking good.
Suddenly, Percy came running back. " I found them." she panted.
"What? Where?" Sam asked more worried about his brother than he would admit. Ben looked equally as anxious as Sam felt.
"Just, follow me." Percy breathed. "I don't think the wendigo's there yet, but we should hurry." With that, Percy started running again, not looking back to see that Sam and Ben were following.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A Lonely Time Skip~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Both Dean and Haley were awake when they came back, and there was one person who was still alive, but sleeping. "Sammy! Could you undo this?"

Sam nodded and went to work on the ropes binding Dean's arms above his head. He glanced over at Percy and saw that she was almost done doing the same thing with Haley. She finished and moved over to the barely-alive boy on the other side of Dean.

"Oh, Tommy! Thank God!" Haley said, suddenly standing, likely due to an adrenaline rush.

The boy was still unconscious. "You're going to have to carry him Sam." Percy said, looking up. Dean and I, and Haley and Ben if they feel up to it, will hold off the wendigo."

Dean POV

Dean didn't really enjoy trying to make it through a mine shaft, jumping at every distant crash. It was destroying his reputation. From the looks of it, everyone felt much the same way.

There was one rather extreme difference however, Percy Jackson, Sam's weird college friend, looked more at ease than Dean had ever seen her. Her body was alert, and her face had settled into the calm of a predator that knew that it would catch his prey. This unusual response to danger was all the more reason for him not to trust the girl. She looked as though this was her normal.

She looked like a hunter, Dean realized. One that had been doing this for a while, and saw no way out. One that didn't necessarily want a way out, because hunting was her entire life. It was a stark contrast to the information that he had been given about her previously. A marine biology student who was fluent in Spanish (A/N: In canon, Percy grew up in a Latino dominated area, so I imagine that it was learned right along with any languages being taught at home.), Hawaiian (A/N: This one is entirely headcanon. I tend to see Percy as Hawaiian [It changes from time to time.] and Sally seems like the type to keep bits of her culture alive, no matter where she is.) Latin and Greek. A girl who had about the average understanding of the supernatural world. (Although she said that her dad was Greek, and she used Greek Mythology things as parallels to real life. If Dead had to guess, he'd say that she knew a bit more about that.) Percy was supposed to be a normal girl who had no clue what she was getting into. Instead, she looked perfectly at home.

Dean was suddenly pulled from his musing by Percy shouting. "Duck!" Dean quickly did as told, pulling Haley and Ben down with him. There was heat above his head, and the sound of Percy's homemade flamethrower going off. ("It's amazing what you can do with hairspray and a lighter.")

"DAMN! I think I got its arm, but the κάθαρμα got away." Percy exclaimed. "You can get up again."

Dean reluctantly did so. "We need to get out of here."

Percy nodded her assent. "You guys hurry ahead. I want to kill this thing before it can hurt someone else."

"What? Are you crazy? You could die!" Sam shouted, turning towards Percy, careful to not further injure Tommy.

"I know Sam, but if I don't do this other people will. I can't let that happen." Percy responded.

Dean looked at her. "Sam, lead these guys help. Your friend's right. Our job is to take out the threat."

Sam looked conflicted. "That's not happening."

Dean was desperate, this was the only way to make his dad proud, and a small, illogical part of him thought that this might be able to make his dad come back. "Come on Sam, saving people, hunting things! The family business, you know? It's our job to make this world just a little bit safer, one monster at a time, you know?"

Sam rolled his eyes, "Why is that up to us Dean?"

"Because no one else can do it!"

Percy interrupted. "Well, I am all for sharing your feelings, but could you do that when we're not all in immediate danger? If you guys are going to get this out anyways, do outside, with the civilians, where you'll all be safe. I'm going to find that thing." Sam was about to say something, but Percy quickly cut him off. "The things already injured, so it shouldn't be as hard to take it down." Then she ran the other way.

Percy POV

Percy hoped to every god out there (and she meant every god) that she looked more confident than she felt. Sure, she was comfortable, the atmosphere of the hunt being similar to the atmosphere of the battles that she had been in. However, she had never fought this kind of monster before. Still, running deeper into the cave, (Ignoring the feeling that had rooted itself into her bones saying get out, leave, run away and never come back.) clutching her homemade flamethrower, (Thank you, Leo.) Percy could feel the battle settle into her skin. The only fighting that she had done in the past four years had been casual sparring with Jessica, too soon, push that back, stay strong, self-defense classes, and the random monsters that always popped up when a demigod was out in the world. She felt like John Watson, in other words, she had missed the feeling of battle.

Suddenly something was behind her, and took all of her self control to look before just shooting fire at the thing. As it turned out, it was an immensely good idea to look as the thing behind Percy was Dean.

"Are you stupid?" he asked, falling into step with the raven-haired demigod.

"No, I have a hero complex. Are you? Running up to someone who's already tense and also holding a literal flamethrower?"

Dean tried, and failed, to hold back a snicker. "Are you always like this?"

"Gorgeous? No, when I first wake up in the mornings I look like the Creature from the Black Lagoon." Percy asked, avoiding the actual question.

"Annoying and Sarcastic," Dean responded, rolling his eyes.

"Oh. Pretty much." Percy admitted.

Dean rose an eyebrow then "Duck!"

Percy immediately complied, and was grateful when she felt heat over her head. Then the screaming started,

"You can get up now." Dean said, starting to walk towards the exit.

"I'm going to assume that you got the damn thing?"

Dean nodded.

"Thank god, I hate it down here and have spent the last way-to-long acting like a character that I yell out in the horror movies."

Dean snickered. "That's all of my life."

The two of them exited the cave.

Dean POV

Dean still didn't trust Percy, but he didn't hate her anymore. There was still no way in hell that he was going to let her in on some of the less important Winchester Family Secrets, the ones that Percy didn't need to know to survive. (He would have kept Yellow Eyes from her, but she already knew about that.)

She was comforting the family at the hospital that they had dropped Tommy off at, while Dean and Sam were sitting on the Impala (A/N: I know that grammatically, you don't capitalize 'impala' but you can't not when it comes to baby.) in an awkward 'we have stuff we need to talk about but neither of us are willing to bring it up' kind of silence when Percy walked back. Dean took the opportunity to leave the tense and awkward silence that had popped up and left to talk to Haley.

Sam POV

Dean only took about fifteen minutes to day everything he wanted to say to Haley and come back to the Impala. In those fifteen minutes, Percy had switched positions in the back of the Impala ten times, and changed the conversation topic with Sam six. (A/N: That's not supposed to be an insult to people with ADHD, as much as it's supposed to be accurate. That's my personal experience with it, in case anyone was wondering. (No one was.)) He was having immense amounts of trouble following what she was talking about now, (Something about a dog she had or something?)(A/N: If anyone's wondering about how she got to this point, I can tell you. (Once again, no one is.)) And was immensely grateful when Dean walked back over. He was less so when, after sliding into the front seat of Baby, Dean brought up a case.

"Dean! We need to look for dad! This detour was bad enough! I-" he cut himself off. "I need to find Yellow Eyes, alright?"

Dean looked over at him. "I get it all right? But the only lead we have on dad are the cases that he's leaving, so it's the only way we can find him. If we save a few people in the meantime, even better."

Percy leaned forward. "Look, I want to kill the thing that took Jess to, but we can't let our anger get in the way of who we are. The old Sam would have helped people while doing this."

Sam sighed. "Fine. where are we going anyways?"

Dean started the car, "Thats the spirit."

Sam rolled his eyes. "That doesn't answer my question."

Dean looked at his little brother. "Lake Manitoc, Wisconsin. There's been some weird drownings."
