Chapter 7
Since my twelve-week check up, Jaelyn and I have been talking a lot about names. It'll either be two boys or two girls. I was curious to find out, but I was spending most of my time hiding my belly from my parents. When I looked at other women's twin bellies, I realized that my belly was smaller than most. It was still hard to keep my almost-twenty-week belly under wraps, though. I knew I'd be telling my parents soon. I'd had quite a few close calls, and I couldn't risk it much longer. Plus, I knew I needed to relieve myself of the stress.
"When are you going to tell your parents?" Jaelyn asked me the night before my twenty-week check up, filming me.
"I think I'm going to tell them tomorrow after my check up. I' m going to come home and make cupcakes with either blue or pink icing in the middle, then I'll put on a slip of paper 'You're getting granddaughters/grandsons' or 'You're getting nieces/nephews.' I think I'll put the slip of paper underneath the cupcake inside the foil. I'm sort of excited about it. I can't keep the secret much longer. It's hard," I explained my plan to Jaelyn.
"And what about Logan? How are you going to tell him?" She asked.
"Jae," I just stared at her. She was still filming. "Please..."
"Okay, I won't bug you anymore. But you do have names picked out? Two for either gender, right?" She wondered.
"Yes, I do. But don't ask, because I'm not telling until I find out the gender," I smirked.
"Awe," Jaelyn jokingly whined a little.
"You'll find out tomorrow, Jae, when my parents find out."
"Okay," she agreed before shutting off the camera.
It was a Friday night, so Jaelyn was staying over at my house. Tomorrow, we'd tell my parents that we were going to the mall, but we would be going to my checkup. For most of the night, we talked about the babies. Jaelyn kept begging me to tell her the names I'd picked out, and I kept refusing.
For most of the night, I had my bedroom door locked, even after my parents had gone to bed. I left my shirt off that night because it was more comfortable that way. Plus, I liked lying my hands on my stomach and feeling it, knowing there were identical twins in there. It was an amazing feeling. Jaelyn told me that she was just waiting for the moment when the babies kicked.
The next morning, November 15, my parents bought that we were going to the mall. Jaelyn, as always, drove me to the doctor's office. When we got there, Claire asked me how I was keeping my belly from my family because I was getting so big.
"I'm telling them this afternoon, and I'm revealing the gender to them as well," I told her.
"Well, that's good, because you wouldn't be able to go much longer without someone being able to tell. I'm surprised you've been able to go this long," Claire chuckled as she set up the sonogram.
Jaelyn began filming as she always did. She asked me, "What do you think you're having? Boys or girls?"
"I'm not quite sure. I don't exactly have a guess," I shrugged.
"I think you're going to have girls. I can see you and Log with two little girls," she told me what she thought.
"I can see myself having girls, but I think it might be boys. That's what I'm guessing. We'll see who's right in a minute or so."
After Claire had the sonogram set up, she began to move the wand across my stomach. She looked at me, then at Jaelyn and the camera.
------
I arrived back at my house with Jaelyn not too long after that. We worked together to bake five cupcakes. We really only needed three for Mum, Dad, and Noah, but Jaelyn and I wanted cupcakes, too.
I made the cupcake batter while Jaelyn secretly typed up the papers. We put the papers in the bottom of the cupcake foils before pouring the batter in. Once we put the batter in, I placed the cupcake tins in the oven.
When the cupcakes were done and ready, I let them cool before I took part of the middle out. I put the colored icing in the middle, then placed the round part I'd pulled out back in after I cut some of it off so the icing had room. I then passed the cupcake to Jaelyn to put the white icing on top so it would cover up the cut I'd made. I repeated this step four more times until all of the cupcakes were filled with colored icing and had white icing on top.
"Are you ready?" Jaelyn asked me, looking at me worriedly. I sighed and thought.
I'd been keeping my pregnancy secret since I found out about it. Less than five people knew; only Jaelyn, Claire, and Doctor Jacobson knew, I believe. Now, I was going to tell my family: Noah and my parents. Soon, everyone in school would know. I had no idea how everyone in school would handle it. I hoped no one would be too hard on me. Plus, my dad's friends would be finding out soon, meaning I'd have to make sure Ashton knows that I'm not telling Logan. It's killed me not being able to tell Logan, but with being over halfway through the pregnancy now, I felt as if I was able to go the rest of the way without telling him.
I was actually excited to tell my parents, in a way. I was excited to get rid of the stress, but I was stressed about telling them. I had extremely mixed feelings. I wasn't sure of what to think. I just sighed and hoped for the best.
When I looked at Jaelyn, she was waiting for an answer. I took a deep breath, looked at her and said a simple word: "Yes."
"Call them in here, then," Jaelyn ordered, encouragingly.
"Mum, Dad, Noah!" I exclaimed, telling them to come into the kitchen. They filed into the kitchen and stared at me. I held up the cupcake tins.
"Do you guys want cupcakes?" I asked.
"Hmm... November 15. No special date. What's this about?" Dad wondered.
"Just try them," I smiled and handed Mum hers, handed Dad his, and made sure to hand Noah the right one. They all looked at me confusedly but took a bite. The colored icing oozed out and they felt the paper in their mouths. They pulled the papers from between their lips, read, them, and looked at me, shocked.
"What is this?" Noah asked curiously with blue icing on his lips. He knew what I meant, but he was just utterly shocked.
"You..." Mum had to stop herself. "You're pregnant, Lily? And why does this say that I'm getting grandsons? First of all, why is it plural, and second of all, how do you know the gender?" Mum fired questions at me. Before I could answer, Dad began.
"There's no way that this baby is Logan's. You couldn't have kept it a secret this long. Who's baby is it? I'm disappointed, but I can't say anything else because the same thing happened to your mum and me."
"Dad, the baby is Logan's... two weeks before he left. Or should I say, babies, boys? I'm twenty weeks with twins," I told all of them, raising my shirt. All three of them gasped.
"How could we have not seen this?" Mum questioned, putting her hand on my stomach.
"Well, I've been wearing loose shirts for the past few months. It's been hard, but I've kept it a secret," I began to cry because of how well they were handling it.
"Lil," Dad used my old nickname and pulled me in for a hug. I smiled into his chest whilst crying. He pushed my head from his chest to ask a question. "When are you telling Logan? Or have you already told him?"
I continued to cry, possibly even crying harder. Dad sighed, knowing by my reaction that I hadn't told Logan yet. "Lil, you need to tell Logan. Do you know how much pain your Mum went through hiding you from me? Do you know how much pain I was in when I found out about you?"
"I can't, Dad..." I told him. "I'll tell Logan when I want to. You can't force me to do otherwise. I won't tell him before I'm ready. You can't tell me when I'm ready."
"You're right, we can't. But we will constantly encourage you to tell him," Mum told me.
"Have you decided on names for my nephews?" Noah's mind was on a subject completely different from Mum's or Dad's.
"I have," I nodded. Now my parents looked at me with anticipation. So did Jaelyn and Noah. "I've decided to name my boys..."
------
Later that night, Jaelyn and I were in my room, talking about how smoothly the announcement went this afternoon. I was glad it went like it did, or I wasn't sure how I would've reacted. I was ecstatic to know that my parents and brother were happy for me. Yes, they were disappointed, but they still were excited to be getting grandsons.
Noah was definitely the one who was the most thrilled. He kept hugging me and putting his hand on my stomach. He had always loved babies, and kids in general. He was over the moon when he realized I was having boys, and two for that matter.
Jaelyn and I talked about how having twins would definitely be harder than if I was just having one baby. She agreed to help me if I ever needed it, though, and I was definitely going to need it. I was glad to have the support of my best friend.
I talked about moving out and getting my own apartment as a plan for a few weeks after the babies were born. I knew I'd want help for the first few weeks, but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to handle it on my own if I lived by myself. Jaelyn told me that she'd live with me and help me with the boys. I thought it was an excellent idea. We would be graduated by then, and it would be extremely helpful if we lived together.
"I don't know what to do about college. I've been planning on going, but I won't be able to with two baby boys to take care of," I told Jaelyn, putting my hand on my stomach.
"Lily, just take classes online. I'm sure you'd have time to do that. Plus, if our parents let us move in together, I'll be there to help," she smiled at me like she had all of this figured out from the get-go.
"What about you going to college? You need to go too, Jae. What are you going to do? I can't expect you to give up going to college to help me with my babies, who are a result of something I did that I shouldn't have."
Jaelyn and I decided to walk down to the kitchen to get a late-evening snack. We walked down the stairs as Jaelyn spoke.
"Lily, I am helping you with your boys. Trust me, you won't be making me miss out on anything. I was thinking that I'd go to a local college, even before you told me you're pregnant. I can go to a local college during the day, while you take care of the babies. You can take online classes in the mornings and evenings when I'm not at college. I could even come home between classes if I have enough time so I can give you a break. We'll work this out, Lily. I'm only gonna tell you this once, I promise you that. This would be a lot easier if you had Logan here to help you."
"Jaelyn, I've told you so many times before. I don't want to tell Logan right now. I can't tell him right now. I'm not making him leave America, give up on his dreams, and come back to Australia just because I'm having his sons," I put my hand on my hip.
"You sound ridiculous, Lily. 'Just because you're having his sons,' wow," she rolled her eyes, getting mad at me. I stood there with my hands on my stomach. I thought I'd just felt the babies move. Jaelyn wasn't paying any attention to me. She was too busy ranting. "This is a big deal, and he should be here to support you. I'm trying my best, but I can't support you like Logan would be able to. He'd be a lot better help. Trust me. He's known you longer than I have, and he knows you better than I do, even though it hurts me to admit that."
"Jae..." I looked at her, and she finally paid attention to me. She gasped loudly, and my mum walked into the kitchen.
"What is it, Lily?" Mum asked worriedly. I smiled at her, and she looked relieved.
"Are they kicking?" She asked, gasping just as Jaelyn had. She quickly trotted over to me and placed her hands on my belly.
"They're really there," I smiled at her, finally feeling my boys moving for the first time.
"They definitely are," Mum smiled back at me and hugged me.
