01: Almost Normal
Colton jogged down the sidewalk, following the path of the slow buses that rolled down the road, carrying a stockpile of chattering children. Colton slowed down and strolled to the front door of Golden Hill High School. He stepped inside and sighed under his breath as he felt the warm wave of heated air flew over him.
He ran to his locker and hastily spun the combination, threw the door open, stuffing his items into it, and slammed it shut. He turned and ran to his classroom.
A small girl had the misfortune to run into him. Her head slammed into his chest as Colton spun to the side, trying to prevent the collision. The girl dropped her things, scattering them on the floor while Colton yelled a 'Sorry!' behind him. Colton burst into his classroom and collapsed into his seat.
The bell rang upon his arrival. Colton celebrated silently at his quiet victory.

Colton walked back home, taking his time to think.
"Happy Birthday", a voice chimed in his head.
Colton smiled faintly as he turned into the alley between the tall brick buildings. His eyes sweeped the area around him to make sure no one was near and spread his wings out behind him. He sat against the brick wall and, taking a gigantic wing on his hand as he examined the feathery appendages. Pure white, with a bluish tint and amazingly soft feathers. He followed the line of strong bone that made up the top edge of his wing. Tracing his finger back, back, until he felt the familiar soft flesh of his own back.
He plucked a white feather from his wing, pulling it out brought a mild burning pain that he assumed came from the wings. A new feather replaced the old one almost instantly. Colton pondered over this phenomenon almost every day.
I gave up trying to understand it a long time ago.
'But maybe I can.'
He wanted answers to explain this abnormality that stretched out from his back. But he told no one of his troubles but the voice in his head, in fear of being taken away and tested on. Trying to solve the mystery which he couldn't do himself.
He had long accepted that the voice was not just his own conscience or subconscious. It was a being of some sort. What, he did not know.
The voice in his head warned him of the things they did to those like him. The thought that there were others who could relate elated him, but he could never find anyone like him in the slightest. Colton stood, folding his wings into his back, the feathers and any trace of his abnormaltoies disappearing entirely, (which was an entirely other matter that baffled him) and continued walking down the cracked sidewalk.
He felt no older than the day before.
'Now 11 years since he died' Colton thought. His father died when he was 3. He was too little at the time to remember how he died, but he knew there wasn't even a funeral. There was nothing to bury. Nothing to cry over one last time. That was around the time Colton discovered his wings, but he never put two and two together.
Colton picked a rock from the ground and tested another one of his powers. He clenched his fist, demolishing the rock, rubbed the chunks close together in his hand and, with a bit of effort and time, poured out a fine gray dust. He sighed and dropped his hand to his side, letting the silence devour him.
~~~
Colton ran as fast as his legs would let him to the edge of the forest. The land cut off sharply, leaving a 150 foot sheer drop below the waves lapped the beach below gently, and the waters were almost perfectly still. A breeze flew through his hair. Colton stopped and sat on the edge of the cliff, letting his feet dangle. For any normal person, this would be considered stupid, but Colton was not normal.
He spread his arms wide and took a deep breath.
Colton inhaled the cool air.
He wondered if he should turn back, if today would be the one time he failed to fly.
1.
Colton held his breath as he plummeted downwards.
~
Colton loved the rush of adrenaline that ran through him as the wind whipped his hair past his head. He screamed happily and spun like a log midair.
His wings opened and he shot upwards, the violent winds catching on his wings. He soared out towards the sea. In the corner of his eye, he could see a human figure point at him.
Occasionally, people saw him. When they did, he made sure to give them a show.
He folded his wings inward and dived towards the sea. His wings opened again once he touched the water. His nose was inches away from the clear blue surface of the waves. He stared at his own rippled reflecting in the waves.
Then he beat his wings and shot upwards a few feet. Looping in a wide circle, Colton tilted till he was flying upside down, back to the sea. He then stared at the pink and purple sky.
He spun around again and flapped his wings, lifting him higher and higher. The clouds dampened his skin as he broke through the clouds and stared at the sun setting, turning a vibrant purple.
Colton hovered there for a moment, staring at the beauty. The colors blending in with each other perfectly, am the light peeking through wispy clouds that rose even higher above him.
He turned his back and dived down into the dense forest. Then he ran all the way home, huffing in the cool air.
