Chapter 16: Mother Knows Best

Hi guys, first things first, I am so sorry for the super late update. School is very busy but it was still no excuse to keep Hiccstrid hanging.

Anyway, the new season is amazing, as always. You did it again dreamworks.

For those who haven't seen it yet, I will be using some lines from those new episodes starting with this chapter and onwards.

Enjoy reading :)

Hiccup Haddock, along with his father, Stoick the Vast, and Astrid's father, Asmundr the Dauntless were taking a walk around the Edge.

Helka had asked the three of them to leave for she and Astrid have important matters to discuss.

In able for the both respectable Vikings to not get bored waiting, Hiccup offered to tour them on the island.

"Not that I don't like your presence... Dad and Mr. Hofferson, but... why the sudden visit?" The young viking asked.

"Astrid sent her mother a letter lad. My wife won't tell me a thing or two about the details except that our daughter have asked for our visit. By the way, it's a nice place you got here." Answered Asmundŕ.

"That's strange." Hiccup, mumbled mostly to himself.

"What's strange, son?" Questioned Stoick. Hiccup was about to open his mouth to say the words "nothing" but his father know him all too well and spoke up before he could even do so. "C'mon Hiccup, spit it out, we heard you."

His father and Asmundŕ both gave him the "say-it-lad" stare.

The young viking sighed. "It's just that..." Both adults motioned for him to continue. "It's... Astrid usually consults me about these kind of things first ~ not that she has to ask permission if she wants her parents to visit because she certainly has the right to do that ~ but... she always tells me whatevers bugging her. Not that she didn't try to keep it up to herself at first but... she... she tells me her problems. It's just strange why she didn't now, you know?"

"She just needs some time with her mother, Hiccup. Try not to think too much about it." Stoick advised his son but the words didn't come handy as he thought would be. Hiccup's face frowned. He didn't know what it feels to have a mother but he understands the need to have one. Maybe he was overthinking things. His father is right.

Stoick noticed that Hiccup's face saddened. He was about to apologize when Hiccup cut him off. "It's okay Dad. I know."

Asmundŕ sensed the change of atmosphere around them from being worried to upset so he decided to change the topic. It was his perfect opportunity to talk to Hiccup about Astrid. "Hiccup, lad, I know how much you care for my daughter. I also know that Astrid has the same amount of concern for you and if she was here with us right now, I'm absolutely sure she would tell you to stop worrying about her.

"Astrid grew up to be a strong lass, Hiccup. Not to mention feisty, brave, stubborn ~ " before he could continue, the young lad interjected.

"Yeah... we were both good at that one specific thing."

"But despite those things, my daughter is also sweet and loving. I know it's hard to believe but she is. She don't want the people around her to worry, even if she does a lot of it herself." Asmundŕ paused letting the words sink in.

Hiccup didn't want to agree with what just Asmundŕ said at the same time he did. He didn't want to because he wanted to say that "It's not hard to believe." But it is. It is for people who don't know her well.

But he does.

He knows Astrid very well.

He knows that her smile reaches her eyes whenever she sees Stormfly and whenever she tries out new weapons. He knows that she loves flying while both her hands were on the air touching the clouds. He knows that sometimes she finds it hard to sleep because she was worrying about how everyone was coping with the current situations. He knows that there was that sparkle in her eyes everytime she sees him. It might've taken him long to realize but in all those years they've spent together, he knows deep inside him that they care for each other the most. That the feeling they have, whatever it is, was mutual.

That...

There will always be a Hiccup and Astrid.
Always.

He knows it.

He knows her. Yet... why can't he read her now. Why can't he tell what was bothering her?

"Hiccup, I, myself, don't know if it was the right time to say it, but, whatever you feel for my daughter, I approve of it."

"W-what?" Hiccup asked startled by the statement.

"Don't deny it, son. Asmundŕ and I have seen you two look and interact with each other." Stoick said.

Hiccup already knows the answer but you will lose nothing if you ask a question right? There's only one way to find out. Plus, it's Astrid's father. Having his answer will give him enough courage to ask Astrid as well.  "Mr. Hofferson? Does uhm... does Astrid feel the same way?"

"The real question is, do you?"

Meanwhile at the Club House...

"Astrid?"

"Yes, Mom?"

"Who do you really see right now?" Helka asked her daughter.

"Mom..." Astrid sighed.

"Astrid." Helka mimicked her with a hint of authority in her voice. Astrid could handle lying to Viggo and tricking him that the Edge was guarded with Captain Gustav but she could never deny her mother anything. You know what they say, Mother knows best. That, or Mother could see behind your lies.

"Hiccup." The young lady answered. "I see Hiccup mom. I see him everywhere."

"When did this started to happen?" Helka asked.

"About five minutes before I wrote you the letter." Astrid answered. The top most reason why she wrote to her mother and asked her to come to the Edge immediately was because Helka trained with Gothi in her teenage years so Helka knows how to help her. Astrid's grandmother, Frigga, was one of Gothi's closest friends before she passed away. The two elders, helped each other discovered different remedies and cure. Frigga passed it down to Helka but it didn't happen the same with Astrid.

The young lass has inherited the Hofferson's Warrior Spirit rather than her mother's side's healing talents. But on the other hand, Astrid is an expert at healing battle scars.

"What happened before that?"

"Well, I got tired so I took a short nap. By the time I woke up, I felt so energenic then when I heard Ruffnut's and Heather's voices I was flabbergasted because all I can see was Hiccup. Two Hiccups to be exact. At first it wasn't that bad, their outfits were the same and so were their voices, the only thing different was Hiccup's faces.

"Then, their voices turned the same as Hiccup as well, and as time goes by, everything about them was Hiccup." Astrid finished.

"What about me?"

"Well, your voice was still the same and so as your attire but your face looks like Hiccup to me. I guess it depends on the time length."

Astrid couldn't understand her own self at why she was so creeped out. She was used to Hiccup's face and she love seeing his auburn hair and green eyes. But maybe it was because she was afraid that if everyone was the same as Hiccup, she wouldn't be able to identify him from everyone else. Or maybe it was because she knew the symptoms all too well and what it means.

Helka used to tell her a story when she was little. It was about a woman who sees everyone as the face of the man she has been in love with for years. It was told that the gods cursed her so that she will be able to tell the man her feelings and if she didn't the man she love will die. She told him, but the person she talked to wasn't the man. In the end, the woman got married with the wrong man, and by the time she was cured, she figured out her mistakes and the man she truly loves died.

"Mom?" Astrid asked with her voice croaking.

"Yes, Astrid?"

"If I don't tell Hiccup my true feelings for him, is he... is he ~ "

"Oh, Astrid. How could you believe that story? I only made it up so you'd get interested in being a healer and not being a shieldmaiden. You don't like playing doctor but you surely love to hear good stories.

"When you were still a little girl, even though we're Vikings and Hoffersons, I was afraid to have you involve in battles. But before your Uncle Finn died, I realize that you were what you wanted to be so I let you follow your instincts and become that."

"Does that mean that, I'm simply sick and not cursed?"

"Of course, Astrid. Not exactly sick but it was more like a side effect. Have you got wounded by any flowering plants?" Helka asked.

Then, it hit her.

Sweet Baby Thor in a Thunderstorm! How could she forget about her the possibility of her wound being the cause of all her hallucinations?

"By any flowering plants, do you mean a beautiful flower with bright sky blue petals and reddish on the inside?"

"Yes. Have you encountered it?"

"I found one while Stormfly and I were out flying. I didn't notice that it has thorns until I tried touching it so I wounded my self. Why? What is it?"

"That certain flower is the Crimson-Blue Flora. Your grandmother has told me about it before but I never encountered it so I thought it wasn't real. It gives off some kind of liquid substance to someone who was wounded by it's thorns that causes the victim to be unusual and have hallucinations about a specific person."

"Then why Hiccup?"

"Because, Astrid, the Crimson-Blue Flora only makes you see the person whom you can't get out of your mind. You're lucky it wasn't the Yellow-Orange one."

"Why?"

"That one makes you forget. Only for a couple of hours though. But this lasts longer and to cure it, we have to find a Crimson-Blue Flora."

"Why do you seem so happy with my situation mom?" Astrid asked when she noticed her mother started smiling and acted giddily.

"Because, darling..." she paused for dramatic effect. "My daughter is in love."

"Mom!"

"Astrid. Remember what they say... mother knows." With that she winked at her.
