Chapter 7 - Apple Pie

Athena is in her car, heading home. On the way, she gets a call from Eryx. When she answers the call, she gets no response as usual. So after that, she doesn't answer it, and her phone rings for a few minutes. She gets irritated and blocks the number for good. But she doesn't know that she can't stop the rain with an umbrella. She gets a text from a new number, but the owner is the same.

The text says Attend the call, Athena. She figures out from the text that both numbers are from the same person. Being the only daughter of a congressman, it's not strange for someone to know her name, but it is unusual to receive calls twice a day from unknown numbers. She thinks someone might be following her. However, she wants to make sure.

She decides to reply to the text. Who are you? How do you know my name?

I know more than your name.

Athena didn't expect this reply. She doesn't know what that person means by 'more than your name', but after reading that text, she's on edge. She blocks the number.

Clara, Athena's mom, is sitting in the living room when her secretary arrives.

"Madam, Sir asked you to sign these documents," he says, handing her a pen and some papers.

As she finishes signing the last paper, Athena comes into the home.

"Oh, hi sweetheart. Wait a minute, I made your favourite dish," Clara says and asks her secretary to leave.

"Mom, what are those documents?" Athena asks her mother.

"Umm, those documents. Those are very important documents. Yeah," Clara says with a nervous smile.

Hmm, what kind of chairwoman signs important documents without reading them? She is only a chairwoman on papers. In reality, everything is under my father's control. He gave her this position because of his reputation. He wants to be seen as the perfect husband who supports women's empowerment by giving authority to his wife. But reality is bitter.

Clara walks into the kitchen and brings out the dish she specially made for Athena. She places the dish on the dining table, seeming very much excited to see her daughter's reaction, and opens the dish.

"Tada! Your favourite dish, apple pie."

Athena freezes on the spot. This is not the reaction Clara expected. Athena is already on edge, and this makes her lose her temper. She throws the plate against the wall, causing the glass plate to shatter along with Clara's heart.

"I hate apples," she retorts.

"Wha... w-what do you mean? This was your favourite dish when you were a child," Clara stammers.

"It was, nine years ago. Oh, right! You weren't with me when I was right," Athena says, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

That hurts Clara, and her eyes become watery. She runs into the kitchen and takes out a small box.

"Did you forget your medicine? Here," she says, moving to hold her daughter.

"Don't touch me!" Athena snaps.

"Athena, I'm sorry. Please let me..." her mother pleads.

"I will kill myself if you take one step forward," Athena says without moving an inch.

Clara is shocked to hear it. She is broken by Athena's words and doesn't dare to take another step.

"You still care about my life, huh? Maybe because now, I'm the only child you have."

Athena says some hurtful words to her mother and goes to leave the dining room. But she pauses on the way out and turns around.

"Alan. He was the one who liked apple pie. It's been a decade, but still you can't differentiate our likings, Mother," Athena says and goes into her room.

That name reminds Clara of the bitter past. She falls to her knees and tears start to flow.

"Alan, my sweet son. Please forgive Mommy," she wails.

In Athena's Room

She lays on the bed and places her left forearm on her forehead, closing her eyes. Today has been the worst day for her.

"Haa. It's been a decade since Alan died. But still, he lives in her mind and heart. You lucky bastard." She laughs wickedly.

Alan and Athena were twins. He was five minutes younger than her. Ten years ago, he died, and everything changed in the Sinclair family. There are a lot of secrets surrounding his death.

Her phone buzzes.

She had received a notification from a different number, but she knows it's the same person. Athena switches off her phone. She's not in the mood for those messages.

On the other hand, Eryx is waiting for her reply. He is standing in a dark room lit by a single red light, his hands covered in blood that isn't his. Two men are tied to a chair in front of him. One of them is covered in blood, dead, and the other is barely hanging onto life.

"When I slit your brother's throat, she replied to me. But now my texts aren't sending. Should I try my luck with your throat? Huh?" He laughs loudly.

The man is so scared of Eryx. After seeing his brother get murdered in front of him, he starts begging for his life.

"P-Please have mercy. I'll tell you everything, please." It's his last effort to live.

"Eryx, we need that information," Chasin adds.

"Don't get involved with my business, brother," Eryx snaps, his eyes dark.

Eryx and his brother are spying on by some gang, and some of their information is leaking. He is torturing them to find out who is behind everything.

"I don't need that anymore. I want a reply from my butterfly," Eryx snarls, and with a swing, he slits the man's throat with the same knife that had killed his brother a few minutes earlier. He places the bloody knife in his mouth and checks his phone for Athena's reply.

"You are not as lucky as your brother, bastard." He loses his control and starts to stab the man, who has already died, again and again until he is satisfied.

"I think you have stabbed him enough," Chasin advises.

"Really?! I don't know, man. I think his chest could use a few more stabs."

Chasin just sighs.

What kind of pills does Athena take all this time?

Is she really taking the pills?

What is the mystery behind Alan's death?
