Chapter 2 - The Crown

A/N: Sentences that are in Italic font are Athena's inner thoughts.

She doesn't like being touched by others, especially not someone as low as Pearla.

I hate those kinds of people. Act innocent, soft, and wait for someone to save her ass. If it weren't for her smart brain, she wouldn't be allowed on campus.

As the daughter of a politician, she has to wear the façade of a good-hearted girl. But under the surface lies a girl with no true emotions or empathy. It's not a big deal to her because she can become whoever she wishes, whenever she wants. She is emotionless yet pretends to have them.

In the school corridor

Athena Sinclair, Brielle Nicole, Arik Bronson, Cody Michelle, and Remina Heather are best friends. Or, they are friends because each of their parents are one of the top five richest people in the city.

Cody and Remi wait for Athena in the corridor. Athena walks towards them.

"Athena, why are you late? Your class must have finished ten minutes ago," Cody asks.

"Had to put some bitches in their place. Were you guys waiting for me?" Athena replies.

"Yes, tomorrow I can't go out with you. Cody and I are going on a yacht date," Remi says with a pout.

"It's fine. Brielle and I will go. Cody, is your father going to design your suit for prom?" Athena asks. Cody's father is a renowned designer.

"Nah, it's not like we'll get that crown. The school doesn't give a fuck about prom king. I don't want to waste my old man's time," he says and points at the crown displayed in a glass case under high security.

Acadia High School has different rules. They don't pick a prom king. Every year, they only choose a prom queen who announces her partner as prom king. All gifts and celebrations are for the prom queen only. Prom king is just a showcase.

"I don't know why you guys like this crown. It's not like we can have it. It is a rolling crown. Next year, the prom queen will also wear this," Athena says, unamused.

"Girl, you must be kidding me. Do you know what that crown is made of? Diamonds and white sapphires, the rarest gems in the world. Spanish royalty gifted those gems to our school's founding family," Remi says with bright eyes.

"I, too, have diamonds. Tell me if you want sapphire, ruby, or anything. I will buy it for you, baby," Cody says and pinches Remi's cheek. Yes, they are rich lovers.

"Don't be ridiculous, Cody. Let me explain to you. Both the queen and concubine are royals. Both can attend the ball in an expensive gown, and both can sit next to the king. But history remembers only the woman who had the crown on her head," Remi says.

No one remembers the second person. The first one gets all the glory.

"Ohh, now I understand why Brielle wants this crown," Cody says with a nod.

That makes Athena interested. She sets her eyes on the crown and observes every stone. Just thinking of them in her head makes her smile.

I know Acadia's prom is nothing less than a royal ball. Students can't vote for the prom title. The chairwoman of our school selects the title and that's the only day we can meet her. Rich people show off their wealth, beauty, and uniqueness. And every year they choose a prom queen. But this year is very special. Acadia's 100-year anniversary is being celebrated by giving the prom queen and king a recommendation letter sealed with Acadia's wax seal.

With this letter, anyone can get admission to a high-end university. But I've never wished to be prom queen and I don't need that letter. I can get admission to any university with my grades, but for someone like Brielle, it's crucial.

Hah, thinking of Brielle wanting this makes me obsessed with the crown. Ha! Now I see it clearly, it's so beautiful. I will make you mine soon!

There are only a few parents who are aware of the recommendation letters, and the ones with the Acadia seal cannot be bribed for. Previously, she was uninterested in that, but now things have changed. Once Athena sets her eyes on something, she will do anything to get it. Literally anything.

At Athena's home:

"I'm home."

"Athena, sweetheart, your father is waiting for you in the study room," Athena's mom says with a smile.

She removes her shoes and puts her bag to the side, then heads to the study room.

"Dad, you asked for me?" she says with her head lowered.

"You did a good job supporting that poor girl. It will help our reputation, sooner or later," he says with a straight face.

Her father is a powerful congressman. He has his people inside her school campus who update him with Athena's every action. Being watched by others for 9 years, she has gotten used to it. As a result, she ensures her father knows what he should know and not what he shouldn't.

"Thank you, Dad."

"But don't overdo it. You may make enemies. Be careful what you do. You are not just Athena, you are Athena SINCLAIR. Everything you do will affect my name."

"Sure, Dad."

"Your prom is in a week, right? On that day, my important client wants a family dinner. So, cancel everything and attend the dinner," he insists.

He knows about Athena's grades. She has the most outstanding grades at school. So, he doesn't bother with the recommendation letters.

"I would love to attend the dinner, but this year's prom is much more important, Dad," Athena says.

"You can get into a top university without those letters. So why do you want to participate?" he questions.

"If I win the prom queen title and the recommendation letter, it'll increase our family's reputation. It's a plus for us," Athena says convincingly.

"Don't make me repeat myself, Athena. Do as I say," he orders.

No, I can't let this happen. I have to think of an idea quickly.

"Okay, Dad. In that case, the prom title will go to Brielle and Arik Bronson. They will get the recommendation letter," Athena says calmly.

"What? Will Wallace's son get a letter? No, that can't happen." What she said had provoked him.

Wallace Bronson, father of Arik. Robert and Wallace had known each other from their school days. They never got along.

"Athena. Do whatever you want to win the title, but make sure that the son of Wallace never has the chance," he says firmly.

That's what I thought. I don't know what happened between them, but when it comes to Arik's father, Wallace, he always loses his cool and wants to beat him in everything. I got what I wanted.

"Sure, Dad."
