Chapter Seventeen: Captured
AUTHOR'S POV
The evil smirk is still plastered on Marco's face then he finds himself enraged all over again and thinks that he should have killed James and Carl...or at least taken their phones because without question they have already called the police. Realizing it's too late he has to stay focused on his plan. He just has to figure out how to do it without being caught. As he continues driving he can see a light flashing from the dashboard and when he looks down he belts out a loud "shit" because the car is running out of gas. Stopping for gas is the last thing he needs because not only does it delay his escape he'll be taking the chance of someone recognizing him again...but he really doesn't have much of a choice. It's either stop for gas or dump this car and steal another one. Stealing another is certainly an idea but that requires a hot wire which will only take up more time. If he was enraged before he's enraged now but most of that anger is geared to Laurent because all he had to do was dance with him. There was no harm in that and it certainly wouldn't have been the end of the world not dancing with Larry once. If he had just agreed none of this would be happening and he wouldn't have to escape to avoid prison. Beyond frustrated and having decided that stopping for gas is much quicker than hot wiring another car to steal, which could potentially be low on gas too, he will pull into the next gas station...but he promises himself that if he gets caught this time Larry and Laurent will get what's coming to them some other way. He sees a road sign for a gas station that's off the next exit so that's the one he'll go to. He doesn't have much to disguise himself with and seeing as how the cops still recognized him he will just have to keep his head down as much as possible to avoid eye contact and people recognizing him and alerting the cops. He takes the exit and to the right is the gas station so he pulls into the first available pump. Much to his relief it isn't crowded at all and to him the less people the better his chances. He clearly doesn't recall being told that he's been all over the news so all it takes is one person seeing him. Still wanting to disguise himself as much as possible he looks in the backseat and notices a hat so he grabs it and put it on with it pulled down over his eyes. With no credit card to pay at the pump means he has to go inside so he takes a deep breath and hops for the best. He walks up to the counter and is greeted by the clerk...
Clerk: "Hi. How can I help you"?
Franco: "Yeah I just need $40 on pump two".
Clerk: "Sure".
Marco tries to control the trembling as he hands over the cash...but it's nearly impossible. Thankfully, the clerk doesn't suspect anything. He merely handles the transaction and thanks him. Marco internally breathes a sigh of relief and is confident that he can get away now. He still walks a normal pace to the car as to not raise suspicion with the clerk and now with the gas pumped he hops in the driver's seat, smirks to himself then cranks up and takes off for the highway again...
~fifteen minutes later~
A police officer enters the empty gas station to grab a few items then over to the clerk. He begins holding a friendly conversation with him when he's interrupted by a message on his radio...
"Calling all units. Suspect that was involved in the high speed chase near the airport has reportedly escaped in a 2014 Nissan Maxima". *gives description of Franco, the car and license plate number*. "Please be advised that the suspect is armed and dangerous".
As the clerk listens his face scrunches into confusion and when the message is complete he alerts the officer...
Clerk: "You know I think that guy was just in here".
Officer: "Are you certain it was him"?
Clerk: "He matches the description that just came over your radio. When he came inside he had a hat over his eyes and he wouldn't give me much eye contact. I thought he was acting weird but I didn't give it much thought. I did see the car he got in and it also matches the description of the one reported".
Officer: "Were you able to see any part of his face"?
The clerk's face turned into one that appears to be "thinking". He can't remember much since Marco kept his head down for the most part but he tells the officer everything he can possibly remember and it doesn't take long for the officer to realize that it was Marco...
Officer: "Which way did he go"?
Clerk: "He made a right out of the parking lot. There's several ways to go but the interstate is close so he's more than likely on it now".
Officer: "Ok. Thanks for the information. You can put those items away".
Clerk: "Yeah no problem".
The next second the officer bolts out of the door and as he gets into his vehicle he puts out an announcement over his radio...
"Calling all units! This is Officer Brian Conrad. I'm at the Qwik Stop convenience store on Joseph Blvd. I have reason to believe that Marco Reyes, aka Franco, is in the area and possibly on the interstate close by. Requesting back up as well as a helicopter".
Almost immediately he begins to receive responses that back up is on the way...
~meanwhile~
The detective arrived at the crash scene minutes ago and is in the middle of observation. Even from a distance he notices the badly damaged vehicle and is extremely surprised that Marco made it out alive. As he approaches the vehicle he can see a young woman being placed on a gurney. He knows it's Delilah but of course he has to see it for himself. He walks over and when he notices an EMT covering her up with a sheet...
Detective: "Hold on please".
EMT: "Yes sir".
Even though the face is covered in blood it's clear that it's her. As a detective for the past fifteen years he's seen his fair share of criminals get away only to be killed but...being killed was too good for people like them. What they really deserved is to see life behind bars and have the one thing taken away from them that they essentially take from their victims...freedom. Sitting in a jail cell for the remainder of their lives is the perfect opportunity for them to reflect on that. Of course there's still the matter of Marco Reyes and if Delilah isn't able to see the four walls of a prison cell he won't rest until Marco is. Having seen enough of Delilah he looks at the coroner...
Detective: "Thank you. You can cover her up".
Coroner: "Sure thing".
The detective blows out a slow sigh as he watches Delilah being placed in the back of the coroner's van. He then looks to his right and notices one of the gentlemen on the receiving end of Marco's wrath standing while the other is being placed in the back of the ambulance. He quickly makes his way over to the one standing...
"Hi. I'm Detective Mitchell. Your name"?
"I'm Carl Williams detective". *extends and shakes hand*
Detective: "It's a pleasure to meet you although I detest the circumstances we're meeting under". *pause* "Can you tell me what happened between you and the suspect"?
Carl: "Yeah me and my buddy saw the crash and came to help. We had no idea it's the guy wanted by the police".
Detective: "And you're 100% sure it was him"?
Carl: "We're positive it was him detective. James noticed it first then he brought it to my attention". *sigh* "When he fired the gun and shot him I thought we were both good as dead".
Detective: "I'm sorry you both went through that. He's definitely been trigger happy lately and that just makes me more determined to find him". *pause* "Mr. Williams, I'll need your contact information". *hands notepad*
Carl agrees and writes down all of his information so the detective is for sure to get in contact with him whenever he needs to...
Carl: "Here you go detective and...I hope you find him soon".
Detective: "I promise you, we will".
As if on cue the detective receives the message that Officer Conrad sent out over his radio just moments ago regarding Marco. He then looks back at Carl...
Detective: "Mr. Williams, I believe we're one step closer". *pause* "I have to go but I'll be in touch with new developments".
After shaking hands once more the detective leaves to make his way to the precinct...
*Marco*
Marco: "Shit! Sirens"!
He reminds himself that he didn't come this far and is this close from achieving his goal only to be captured now. He continues driving for another mile when he notices the sirens have gotten closer and upon a look in the rear view mirror he sees several cop cars. He instantly panics and hits the gas harder then starts maneuvering roughly through the cars. He even side swipes one...but thankfully the driver of that car swiftly regains control. Marco knows this area pretty well so he takes the next exit in hopes of throwing the cops off and for a minute he succeeds...but shortly after he looks in the rear view mirror again and sees that they have caught up so he cusses out loud again in frustration. He presses the gas much harder and starts driving at a dangerous speed. His adrenaline is pumping so hard that he hasn't heard the helicopter above him that's following his every twist and turn. After another a mile or so, he runs into a slight traffic jam because ahead of him one lane is closed for construction so traffic is backed up...but that won't stop him whatsoever so he swerves into the closed lane. One of the construction workers holds up the large stop sign but Marco doesn't relent and if he has to he will run the man over in order to get away. When the construction worker realizes he isn't going to stop he jumps out the way as Marco burrows through the debris. Because of the impact the car pulls left then right as Marco struggles to gain control of it. He eventually does so he keeps going and if at all possible much faster...but he's still oblivious to the helicopter above him. His focus is on the cops following him by car and when looks up to check if they're still on him he's confused to see that they are. He doesn't realize that other drivers are required to pull over and let them by as their sirens are on for a reason. Nonetheless he keeps his focus on the road...but the cops are closer than he thought. He then feels the car jolt and soon after it begins to slow down. He looks in the rear view and sees a cop leaning out of the window with a gun pointed in his direction and he concludes that the cop has shot a hole through the back tire. Now the car has come to a complete stop...but he still won't give up. Making one more attempt to get away he jumps out of the car and takes off on foot...failing to remember that he's suffered an injury to his leg from the car crash so he's unable to run at a fast pace. The officers are out of the car and running after him...
Officers: "Freeze"!
Officer 1: "Freeze! Or we'll be forced to open fire"!
Marco keeps running as hard as his body will allow for he just can't give up. This will turn out to be another poor decision because now he feels a hot sensation in his leg causing him to yelp in pain and fall to the ground. Now next to him one cop keeps his gun on him while the other bends down to officially arrest him...
Officer: "Marco Reyes. You are under arrest for the murder of Jonathan Tucker, the attempted murder of Laurent Bourgeois, conspiracy, extortion....."
He continues reading Marco his rights and now the cuffs are secure. Finally...he's captured...
