We'll Meet Again

"This way," Retch said. He led the family to a huge building. "This is the Stagger Inn."

"Wow!" Harold exclaimed excitedly. "I remember this place. My father and I used to stay here all the time."

"Um, Retch? What is the Stagger Inn?" Lauren asked.

"It is a hotel in Horrorland that is available to both humans and monsters," the Horror explained.

"Humans and monsters?" The wife was shaking a bit at what he had just said to her, but her husband held her close and comforted her.

"Honey, there are no such things as monsters. Any monsters that you see here are just people in costumes. Retch is doing his job, and his job is to scare us."

"I know," his wife told him. "But still..."

"Franz Mahar is staying here," Retch stated. "Let me show you to his room."

They walked inside and went up the stairs, and then stopped at a door that had the numbers 392 bolted to the door. Retch knocked. "Mr. Mahar?" He opened the door, and they saw Mahar sitting at a desk in the corner of the room. Mahar was writing something in a book of his.

"Mr. Mahar?" the Horror spoke up.

"Huh?" Mahar suddenly stood up from his desk and turned to them, and his eyes widened when he saw Harold. "Son?"

"Dad!" Harold and Mahar ran to each other and hugged each other tightly.

"I am so happy to see you again, son."

"Me too."

Lauren slowly walked into the room with Baby Shelly and looked around. "Oh, what a nice room. Dust and cobwebs. How wonderful."

The old man smiled at her. "You must be Lauren, my son's wife."

"Yes, I am."

"Tell me. Do you love my son?"

"Of course I do. Why else would I marry him?"

"I just want my son to be happily married, since I never had a happy marriage."

Lauren nodded sadly. "Harold told me about his mom. It is a shame that she left you."

"Goo!"

Mahar looked at Baby Shelly. "Well, look who it is. My beautiful granddaughter." He picked her up and held her. "Such a cute baby."

"Goo!" Baby Shelly grabbed his nose, and he chuckled. "Someone likes me." He carefully laid her down on the bed next to two identical puppets.

"Dad?" Harold questioned, noticing the puppets. "Are these not the puppets that you made when I was young?"

The maker nodded. "Yes, son."

"And you still have them?"

"They are my life's work. I would never want to get rid of them."

"They sure look creepy," Lauren commented.

"At least, they do not walk nor talk," Harold stated. "After all, puppets cannot come to life."

Mahar put a hand on his son's shoulder. "Harold, would you like me to take you and your wife on a tour of Horrorland? Things have changed here over the years, and I really want to spend some time with my own son and his wife."

"Sure, dad."

"What about Shelly?" the wife asked, worried about her baby girl. "I do not want her to be in this room all by herself. She could fall off the bed and get hurt."

"Do not worry," Mahar reassured her. "Retch will watch over her. He is a good babysitter."

Lauren looked at Retch, and then back at Mahar. "I do not know..."

"Your daughter will be in good hands, ma'am," Retch told her. "I promise."

"...okay..."

"Good!" Harold exclaimed. "Now, let us go!"

Mahar winked at Retch as he and the family walked out of the room. After they were gone, Retch walked out and closed the door, and then left.
