Not so bad
Stars covered the deep blue night sky in a brilliant glitter, a twinkling shine reflected on Cloie's eyes as she stared at the view in awe. "I've never seen this many stars before!" She squeed excitedly. Sitting beside her and watching with interest, Doug found himself smiling at her fascination with almost everything she encountered. He was even getting into the hype and enjoying himself.
"Doug, look! It's a shooting star!" She beamed, pointing at the sky.
"Hm, 's that so? We gotta hurry up and make a wish then." Doug replied, grinning.
The two of them closed their eyes and thought of something to wish for, even though they both knew how silly it was to make pointless wishes from stars. It wouldn't hurt to dream a little.
A few moments later, Cloie opened her eyes to find Doug staring at her. Brown orbs studied her face as if she was something rare. She blushed and quickly averted her gaze from him. It still hadn't completely sunk in yet that he just asked her out out of the blue. What was more unusual was that she accepted, which had brought them to where they were now.
It was many meters above the ground where they both could hide and be in each other's company without disturbance. At first, Cloie was reluctant to go somewhere that high off the ground. But Doug was incredibly persuasive and she ended up getting a piggyback ride up to the rooftops. The cool breeze brushed against her skin when he jumped from building to building with ease. If Twilights were as nice as he is then maybe they're not that bad, she mused.
Two hands reached out and pinched her cheeks. The sharp pain was enough for Cloie to snap out of her thoughts. Tears began pooling in her eyes.
"H-Hey! Knock it off!" Cloie wailed in complaint.
Doug frowned at her in a way that he looked really really annoyed. She stared at him pleadingly, hoping that she didn't do anything to make him mad. Then he started rubbing his fingers in circles, causing her cheeks to hurt even more. An amused smirk tugged the corners of his lips and Doug began pulling the skin like it was made of elastic. Cloie's face stretched and he laughed at how bigger her head looked.
"Ouch! Doug, that really hurts! Stooop!" She cried and tried prying his hands off.
He clicked his tongue and pulled on the skin even harder, causing the tears to double in amount. "If you don't want me to pinch you again then don't just suddenly look away from me like that," He explained with a stern expression. Cloie nodded almost instantly and he finally released his hands.
"Heh, your cheeks are all red." Doug commented, poking the left cheek.
"And whose fault do you think that is?!" She whimpered.
Doug whistled quietly, feigning innocence. Cloie huffed and tackled him down in an attempt to get back at him. However she clearly underestimated his ability to react quickly and he was able to easily pin her down. Doug hovered above her and she was unable to move. The situation was definitely not how she pictured it to turn out.
"Naughty girl," He chuckled and leaned in closer. "Did you really think you could take me down just like that?"
The way he looked at her just now had a paralyzing effect on her entire body. Was it fear?
If she wasn't careful around a Twilight, then she would certainly get hurt. Cloie reminded herself that as she muttered a quiet apology in hopes of appeasing him. Though when Doug saw how quickly she became submissive under him, he felt a little... conflicted.
"Jeez. Do you even realize what you're doing to me?" He sighed, a light pink blush coloring his cheeks as he let her go.
Cloie blinked at him and asked what he had meant, but Doug avoided the question looking really embarrassed. This only made her more curious. She was aware that she wasn't very good with figuring these sorts of things out. Although she might have read a book that described a similar reaction from him.
With a light shrug and a gentle smile, she leaned against his shoulder and decided to just forget about it. The unexpected gesture and added weight to his side made Doug flinch in surprise. He looked down at her and saw that she was closing her eyes.
"Doug..?" Cloie called.
"Yeah?" He replied.
Not wanting to receive another punishment, she thought about her words carefully before opening her mouth. Although this proved to be much harder than she initially thought.
How would one ask a Twilight if they were mindless killing machines without hurting their feelings?
Doug looked at her impatiently and scoffed. "If you have nothing to say then don't mention anything at all." He told her harshly. The irritation written all over his face made her curl up in discontent, not wanting to provoke him further. But this only made him feel more uncomfortable as she kept her mouth shut and stretched the silence.
"Hey," He flicked her forehead. "If you wanna tell me something then let me hear it. I'm not a mind reader, you know."
Cloie placed a hand on her forehead and pouted. "It's not exactly something I can ask you so carelessly," She reasoned.
"Then don't be careless when asking it." He answered back like he solved the problem.
Cloie sighed. "Okay. Let's change the subject since I can't find a way around this." She rolled her eyes at him. "What was up with that earlier? I mean... Why'd you ask me out?"
"No reason. I was just..." Doug looked at the sky as if there was an answer to fill in the blank. "Curious, I guess is the word?"
Hearing that made Cloie smile and she perked up. "You're curious about me?" She asked, moving closer. He scooted away when he noticed her leaning a little too close to his personal bubble. Normally he wouldn't mind that much but she was grinning at him so widely that it creeped him out.
"Like I said, weird." He murmured and raised an eyebrow at her. "Are you naturally this strange towards people or do you have some sort of loose screw?"
Cloie blinked at his question. Then, she frowned.
"Well, sorry." She huffed and crossed her arms, turning around to face away from him. "I don't get to meet a lot of people, okay? And I've never met a Twilight before either. So all of this is a huge first for me."
"I see... So you're a shut-in?" He smirked.
"You've got a real knack for conversation, don't you?" She replied sarcastically.
"Just tryna figure you out. I mean, you're really..."
"If you call me weird one more time--"
"Unique. I was gonna say unique."
"Suuuure, you were."
In spite of how different they were, Cloie and Doug didn't really mind. The night was filled with laughter, bad jokes, and goofing around. It wasn't exactly the best first date. But the two enjoyed themselves nonetheless.
