Chapter One: The Big Move
It was a cool summer day on long island, the sun beamed gently on a forgotten groundskeeper's cottage squeezed among the mansions of the newly rich, just 20 miles from the city. Inside the small cottage were two people unpacking. A clear-eyed, hopeful, 29-year-old Nick Carraway and the beautiful and curious, 23-year-old Angel Laurent. As the two unpacked neither notice the curious stares cast out their neighbor's window nor did they notice the man's look of happiness and shock when he caught sight of the young woman and the slight scornful glare he wore when she hugged the male that accompanied her. Grabbing the last suitcase, the two made their way back inside as the radio blares on about stock market records.
Nick, still unpacking, eyes a mountain of unpacked books. A few of which only Angel read, the spine more out from the constant use while others were the ones he studied. Smiling, Nick's thoughts drift off to memories of the blonde woman curled up to his side while he studied, but his eyes always found themselves focused on her. The way she'd smile as she read-only for it to turn to a small frown as her eyebrows scrunched together in dismay when her favorite character met an ill fate. This was one of the many things Nick loves about Angel Laurent.
Grabbing his bonds book he heads to the porch, soon followed by the girl he loves who was holding a leather-bound copy of Beowulf, a story she had read dozens of times. Angel had just cuddled up to his side when a woman's shriek startled them, the younger of the two jumping slightly at the sound.
On the neighboring beach, a group of revelers are frolicking. A scantily girl clad waves and then disappears into the trees, drawing the pair's attention to their neighbor's house. Through dense foliage, Nick spies the mysterious spires and towers of the neighboring Gothic folly while Angel observed the many types of plants, a slight smile gracing her features. In a high tower window, a curtain flutters ominously as they are quickly shut.
By the afternoon word of the pair's arrival reached the ears of Nick's cousin, who had immediately requested the two come over for dinner. Though Nick was hesitant, wanting to spend some more time studying with Angel by his side, he had immediately accepted once seeing the object of his affections beam with joy at the mention of Daisy. While he was a bit jealous that Daisy could make her smile like that, he was glad she was happy.
(This is a short chapter, I wasn't sure how to actually start the story.)
