Chapter Five
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! The sound annoys me for another minute before I gather enough energy to shut the clock off. My eyes focus on the time it displays. 7:01 am.
"Seven-o-clock, really?" I complain to Gracie and Rebecca, who are somehow already up and dressed.
"Gracie and I set it for you last night when you were at the Lounge with Cole. We didn't realize it was twenty minutes late, so it's actually seven-twenty one."
I shoot out of bed. "How do you know that?" No one is supposed to be aware of it.
"The time thing? When it went off beeping a minute ago, I saw it and recognized the delay."
"No, about me and Cole."
"For crying out loud, I can read minds," Rebecca says, rolling her eyes. "No one is supposed to be aware of it. Correction: Ms. Meyer isn't supposed to be aware about it. Everyone knows that Cole warns all the new kids."
"You're not supposed to be using your ability," I remind her.
"Ha," she replies. "Like I'm going to just ignore the fact that, oh, I can read minds. No big deal."
"And are you really not going to fly for the rest of your life?" Gracie asks.
"All she said was outside of class," I corrects. "I'll fly here. They'll help me."
"She's lying," Gracie says. "If you don't do it on your own time, you'll never fly, and flying is like, the coolest ability someone can have, and here you are, agreeing to just throw it away. Really, Cassidy?"
I sigh. "Whatever."
I get out of bed and then frown when I see the empty hanger. "Wait, where do I get my uniform?"
Rebecca bites back a laugh. "You haven't gotten your uniform yet?"
Frowning, I shake my head.
"You're going to class in your pajamas then!" She and Gracie start cracking up.
"When will I get it?" I ask.
"Later today, probably," Rebecca answers.
"Can't I borrow one of your uniforms?"
"The thing is," Gracie explains. "We only get one uniform."
I take a step away from them. "That's disgusting."
"Per day," she adds. "We get new ones every night."
"Good," I say. "But do I seriously have to stay in my pajamas?" I look down at my dancing penguin pajama shirt that match with mini-penguin pants. There's no way I'm staying in that. "Can't I talk to Ms. Meyer or something?"
"There's no time," Rebecca replies. "We have to leave for breakfast now."
"Now?"
"It starts at seven-thirty," she explains. I moan again and follow them to breakfast and to the table with Cole and the twins, and I suddenly become even more embarrassed when I see everyone in their nice uniforms and I'm in penguin pajamas.
Cole is the first to notice. "Nice pj's, Cassidy."
I glare at him in response.
"It was no accident, though," Alec assures. "Ms. Meyer does that to everyone. 'An innocent mistake.'"
"I take it you don't like her?" I ask, causing for Cole to glare. "Stupid me, of course you don't. You act like she's going to kill you or something."
"Because she is," Gracie says.
"Whatever." I sigh, and take a bite of the pancakes in front of me.
Alex smiles. "Good, huh?"
I nod between mouthfuls. "Very."
"Yeah, don't eat it," Alex replies, and dumps my plate in the trash.
"Hey!" I protest.
"It's part of her plan," Rebecca explains. "No eating the food here."
"So, I guess starving is the best option?" I ask sarcastically.
"No, silly," Cole says. "You have sneak into the kitchen for some real food."
"I don't think so," I refuse.
"She's one stubborn girl," I hear him mumble to the other kids.
"Well, unless you have proof of Ms. Meyer killing me, I'm not going to believe you," I tell them.
"You'll get proof soon," Cole promises.
"Why?"
"You'll see him at lunch."
"Him?"
"You'll see."
"I hate you guys."
"We try."
I roll my eyes and start to fidget, a habit I get from my mom. I do it when I'm annoyed, though. And right now, I'm very annoyed. Here I am, stuck with a bunch of crazy people at a boarding school named MAD for kids that have super powers. I seem to be getting less normal every day.
After breakfast, they lead me to our first class: Garden. "Isn't this kind of stupid?" I ask. "You know, since Gracie can do everything with her mind."
"Tell that to him," she challenges, and gestures to the teacher.
I immediately know not to.
