Chapter One
Two years after the powerplant exploded, the government created amulets that depicted what powers and abilities the person had. Some of the main powers included those with nature powers, powers of time and space, even magic.
"Elliot!" I heard "Where are you?"
"I'm in here!" I called back, flipping through my book. The creation of this order bothered me. That wasn't to say how I ended up with an amulet. I reach up toward my throat where my shapeshifting necklace lay against my chest. Unlike most powers, shapeshifting was the most powerful, it started a few days ago when I was walking through the city of Raleigh, I accidentally ran into of the citizens, suddenly, I found myself controlling the wind. I knew everything about storms and what was coming that same day, I glanced at my hands and gasped, I had bright pink nails and long brown hair. Fear spread throughout me as I raced back toward my house by the time I arrived, I was back to my boyish features. That day I told my mother what happened. My family was human; there was no way that I could turn into something or someone else. That was when she gave me the amulet.
"Elliot!" Mom exclaimed. "You're going to be late for school!" she continued, her footsteps echoed down the hall. "You better not be stuck in that history book again!"
I looked up and saw her standing at the door. She frowned the creases pressed against her forehead. She wasn't as old as the creases said. I figured she was simply stressed. I put my book down and stood.
"I just wanted to read more," I said. "I don't understand why I have to wear this amulet." I place my hand against the cool metal, thoughts circling my mind as I continued to recall things about my childhood. I barely remembered who my parents were, all I could think about were these special powers.
"Now hurry and get ready," My mother repeated. "I don't need another virtual phone call from your principal again."
Turning from my room, my mother left to tend to other things in the house. I sighed shaking my head and knowing that I needed to get everything ready. I walked over to the closet and grabbed a set of clothes, its currently fall and I was ready to put on some sweater weather apparel. I grabbed a pair of sweatpants, a black t-shirt and my favorite pair of sneakers. I grabbed my backpack and stuffed it to the brim with my schoolbooks and an extra pair of clothes for gym.
"Elliot?" A small voice said. I turned to find my little brother entering my room. He was a bit shorter than me, his eyes were a deep hazel and he had red hair, most likely from mom's side of the family. However, unlike me, George was a normal human.
"Hey buddy, What's up?" I smiled.
"I heard that more people with abilities are disappearing," George responds with babydoll eyes. "You don't think they'll take you? Do they?"
I chuckle; I'd heard that more kids with special powers were constantly disappearing. So far special ops hadn't come for me yet. They must think that I am human.
"No buddy," I ruffle his hair allowing it to get messy. "Now scat, I need to get ready for school."
George laughed and took off running back to his room amid me finishing up my routine. Once I got everything ready, I walked downstairs the halls full of my childhood photos as well as George's pictures. I got to the kitchen to find both my parents, my mom cooking breakfast while my dad read the latest news on his slim tablet. Next to him, a cup of coffee.
"'bout time you came downstairs, Elliot." Dad said.
He dressed in his nicest suit. My adopted dad wasn't your ordinary businessman; in fact he is a big politician. I know what you're thinking, how could a politician take in a kid with special powers? Simply put, my father works for the government.
"Sorry dad," I shrug. "Got caught up in my reading."
I took a seat around the table as mom places fresh baked waffles and bacon. My mouth watered as I shoved the slices of bacon and pancakes in my mouth. Downing my orange juice.
"You and those books," Dad responded. "I should be glad that you don't want to play video games," he chuckled. "Now get going or you'll be late."
I nod and put my shoes on before leaving the house and heading to school. From my house my school is approximately a five-minute walk, as I'm starting to leave my neighborhood, the hairs on my neck stood on end. I stopped and as I waited, the feeling began again. Instinct kicked in and I turned grabbing the wrist of my pursuer only to discover that it was my close friend, Nisha Valient.
"Nice instincts, Elliot," Nisha smiled. "I wasn't expecting you to be that fast."
"Sorry," Elliot responded. "But you shouldn't sneak up on people."
"I wanted to see what happened." Nisha chuckled. "Ready to go to school?"
Nisha is one of my best friends. We'd been friends ever since we were five years old. When we were in elementary school, I'd been going through a lot. It was also around the time when I'd been going back and forth through different foster homes. One day, one of the bullies came after me. I tried getting away from them, but they wouldn't leave me alone. That was when Nisha stepped in and stood up. From then on no one picked on me and we were the best of friends.
Nisha wasn't your average human, she wore a studded leather jacket over her Ramones band t-shirt, paired with distressed black jeans and heavy combat boots. Spiked bracelets and a choker completed the defiant look. As we arrived on campus, my head started to hurt. I'd heard strange voice; my thoughts wouldn't clear. I searched around and saw a white van sitting on the curb of the school. Staring me down.
