Chapter 1

The demon was sitting on a rocky chair in a dusty room. His body was lulled into a false sense of bliss by the slight movement of the squeaky chair. His eyes were set on the window, lifelessly gazing at the world beyond him and what he had known. Ever since he got out of that nasty lake he couldn't believe any second of what he had witnessed was real. He was up, on the surface of the Earth, and not underneath it. It would have sounded to him like a great time for a vacation, away from all the bitchy siblings and nagging adults had he not remembered the reason behind his unplanned visit.

He looked up at the sun and frowned. The fiery ball was staring right back at him, the light coming out of it almost taunting him. It was unusual to see it for more than half an hour. The sun didn't seem to be welcoming him in its domain for it was starting to burn his eyes until he was forced to avert them.

A quiet meow sounded from the floor. With one look in its direction the boy saw a beautiful black cat with one green and one yellow eye staring at him. Their eyes met and suddenly he was overcome with a warm feeling burning in his chest. The mismatched eyes on him were knowing, too intelligent for a simple animal. It was special and he knew it wasn't just an ordinary cat, but he didn't exactly know what earthy species were like so he let it go with a quick note to himself to see to it later.

He wasn't used to animals as most avoided him, even the hellish breeds. He relished the fuzzy feeling, for once something different from the usual cold wrapped around him in a tight hold. He didn't know what it was about this specific cat but he wasn't going to complain when it jumped on him and nestled in his lap.

With a warm ball of fluff on his legs and a gentle hand petting it, he allowed himself to get lost in his thoughts. He was trying to slowly process the whole situation while short black hairs were tickling his calloused hands.

Not much sooner was he having a trip down memory lane than the old woman emerged from her room. Her shock appeared to have not passed since the last time he saw her.

She was a fragile thing with a skinny short frame, wrinkled pale skin and balding white hair. Her eyebrows were drawn in a deep frown that didn't quite suit her face very well. Her thin lips were slightly parted as she observed the way he had made himself feel at home.

Mary-Ann still had troubles comprehending what she had witnessed. She took in the sight of that demonic creature calmly petting her cat, Zoya, almost like he was waiting for her to come out of her room.

He craned his neck to the left. He didn't stop petting Zoya but was patiently waiting for her to do something. But what, she didn't know. Her bony finger every so often twitched at each momentary thought of calling the police. It was the logical thing to do, especially when an unnaturally coloured weirdo was relaxing in her home, acting like it was his.

The red eyes focused on the barely there tremor of her index finger and narrowed. She could have sworn she saw them flash entirely black for a second before they turned back to the shocking red from before.

"I wouldn't advise you do what you're about to do," he stated. His voice was calm, but she was able to detect the threat hidden in his tone and composed demeanor.

Her hand froze inches from the phone in her pocket of the knit sweater she had put on in the chilling morning. She reluctantly moved her hand away and clutched the front of her top. Suddenly she was feeling rather cold and her teeth chattered.

The cold went away just as unexpectedly as it came. She let go of the sweater. The boy was observing her closely; he was analysing her every move with uncanny precision.

She tried to ignore the nagging feeling, the chills down her spine, and struggled to meet his eyes.

"I don't think I've introduced myself. I'm Lavaid and your new roommate for the time being," he said to her casually, seemingly not acknowledging her wariness.

"I- I'm Mary-Ann." She tried to hide the slight tremor in her voice. The aura of the boy was anything but welcoming, being near him made her palms sweat from the nerve wrecking situation she put was in.

He brought his hands together and clapped once loudly enough to make Mary-Ann's fragile heart skip a beat, aiding in startling her even more. The boy gave her a sharp grin, probably noticing her shakiness. "Pleasantries aside, I need you to help me with something."

The woman's breath audibly hitched. She opened her mouth, preparing to refuse but Lavaid continued before she even had the chance to utter a word, "Now, now, let's not forget who saved your insignificant life, yeah? You owe me, lady." That shut her up as fast as he was hoping it would. "I need a phone or a computer with internet access."

Such a strange request, Mary-Ann thought as she shook her head. "I don't have any of those things," she quietly said - quietly because she didn't want to anger the boy. She didn't know what he was capable of.

Lavaid let out a frustrated groan and ran a hand through his hair. Of course a walking skeleton of a human wouldn't have modern technology. Just his luck. With a sigh, he closed his eyes and tried to think of other alternatives. He had to do his research of this world soon.

"Where... Where else can I find a computer I can use?" After a prolonged awkward silence he finally got the question out in the open. It was a risky move on his part as he didn't know that much about humans to be walking among them in search of a computer, but unfortunately he didn't have any other ideas.

"The library has a few," Mary-Ann suggested, unsure if he would want to travel all the way to there. However, she didn't know how desperate he in reality was.

"Well, show me where this library is."
