Chapter 4
When Superman arrived at the scene that Sam Lane had summoned him too, he found it was the sight of a nuclear reactor and from what he could tell about the situation, it looked like something was causing the reactor to melt down as he flew inside the facility to see the damage done while also using his super hearing to listen in to what the reactor staff were saying about the damage done and so far, it wasn't good. The heat exchanger was offline and there was no water being pumped into the facility. The situation was too hot for his freeze breath to fix, the facility needed actual water to fix it. But first, he needed to seal the crack that had been put in the cooling tower, which he did with his heat vision, though he was careful to make sure that all he did was seal the crack and not cause any further damage.
"Come on, think." Superman said to himself as he began trying to think of a way to get some water into this facility, since he knew that even with the crack sealed, it wouldn't be enough to cause the reactors to cool down. Then he got an idea as he flew out of the facility and into the nearby sea and began using his freeze breath on the water, returning the surface carrying a huge chunk of ice, which he flew back to the power plant and as soon as he entered, the heat from the reactors began melting the ice, resulting in freezing cold water falling onto the reactors, cooling them down and preventing a disaster.
"Nice work." Sam Lane said when Superman arrived outside to meet him and the threat reduction agency.
"Thanks. It was a crack in the cooling tower, just like at the power plant in Oyster Creek and what's more concerning is that based on what I saw, they were both manmade." Superman said.
"I know, that's what concerns me." General Lane said.
"Any ideas how no one noticed?" Superman asked.
"None. Especially since you can't get the equipment needed to cause a crack like that in undetected. Whoever did this was good." Sam said.
"Yeah tell me about it." Superman said.
"There's something else we need to talk about." Sam said.
"And that would be?" Superman asked.
"Supergirl. I saw the news, a strange blonde woman appears out of nowhere wearing a suit like yours, including the S on her chest, showing very similar powers to yours and she calls herself Supergirl. Care to explain?" Sam asked and Superman sighed.
"She's my cousin." Superman said.
"When were you going to drop that bomb on me?" Sam asked.
"Never. Because just because I work with you and I'm close with your daughter, that doesn't mean I trust you with something like that." Superman said, taking Sam aback.
"You know that we had a deal." Sam said.
"Yes and she is not a part of it." Superman said.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Sam asked.
"Because she wasn't ready to walk the path like I did and I wasn't going to let you try to force it on her. Force her to be a weapon." Superman said.
"I wouldn't do that to a kid. Especially since I have enough issues with you and Lois as it is without turning you into the enemy. Besides, do you really think I don't already know who she is." Sam said and Superman sighed.
"I guess having you over at the same time as the boys' aunt Kara was a bad idea." Superman said and Sam chuckled.
"If you want to keep her identity secret, yeah. But I kept her secret because I knew that you'd never forgive me if I didn't. Plus, knowing her name means that I know her family, specifically the fact that her sister is the second in command of the DEO and I have no desire to start a war with her." Sam said.
"Remember that instinct. And remember that Lois loves Kara like a sister and just like me, she'd pick Supergirl over you in a heartbeat." Superman said.
"I will keep that in mind. But anyways, what about the boys? How's Jordan holding up?" Sam asked and Superman smiled.
"Not happy that I'm not letting him play football." Superman said.
"It's better that way. Especially since that's Jon's thing and Jordan shouldn't step on it." Sam said.
"On that we agree. But anyways, let me know if you find anything about this. I need to get going. It sounded like Jon was starting up the old argument again." Superman said.
"One more thing. How's Lois doing?" Sam asked.
"Not letting anything slow her down. You remember how hard it was to convince her to go on bedrest when she was pregnant with the boys." Superman said and Sam chuckled.
"Yeah, she's a fighter." Sam said.
"Just like her father." Superman said as he flew off.
