Chapter 31
"Welcome back guys." Sarah said to Jon and Jordan at school when she saw they returned only for Jordan to push past her without saying a word.
"What's going on with him?" Sarah asked.
"Our trip to National City ended in a very bad way for him, since mom, dad and Aunt Kara decided they'd had enough of his attitude." Jon said.
"Really, what happened?" Sarah asked.
"Well, we got to see our aunt's clubhouse and found out that she has an alien dog from the same planet as her and dad, I'll explain later, and Jordan decided that he wanted the dog for himself and pissed Aunt Kara off which resulted in her locking a power dampener on his wrist that only she, mom or dad can remove." Jon said.
"So he doesn't have his powers right now?" Sarah asked.
"Nope and he's not getting them back until his attitude improves, since mom and dad are done with him and it means that I'm finally free from having to babysit him all the time, since now he's about as strong as any other kid." Jonathan said, feeling more smug about that than he shouldn't be.
"Yeah, I thought he'd be happy about that, since honestly, this necklace is the only reason I'm not on the ground, grabbing my ears right now." Sarah said, referring to her red sun necklace.
"Yeah, dad said there's an adjustment period but you'll get the hang of it." Jon said.
"Think you'll ever get the brawn to go with your brains?" Sarah asked.
"Not sure, but honestly, I'm happy just to be super smart. Especially since it means that my skills on the field are all me, since there's no way mom and dad would let me play football without making sure I could expose my powers like that." Jonathan said.
"True. But how did the trip go for you, since I'm hoping that you didn't get into trouble like Jordan did?" Sarah asked.
"No, I was the good one and you know, if you don't count the reason we went to National City in the first place, I think it was a good trip. Or as good as it can be given the circumstances." Jon said.
"How is your aunt's sister doing, since it sounds like you don't call her aunt?" Sarah asked.
"Actually we do. And Aunt Alex is doing as well as she can given the circumstances." Jonathan said as they walked through the halls towards their first shared class of the day.
"Still, how did it go for you?" Sarah asked.
"Better than Jordan, since I think I'm set for an internship at L-Corp this summer." Jonathan said.
"Wait, what, how'd you manage that?" Sarah asked, raising an eyebrow.
"My aunt is dating the new CEO, so now I have a personal in with Lena Luthor." Jonathan said.
"I thought your dad hated the Luthors and L-Corp?" Sarah asked, since everyone knew about the feud between Superman and the Luthors.
"Lena Luthor is the exception and she's really made a lot of changes for the better to L-Corp. Plus, this internship will look great on my college applications, so mom's all for it, especially since Aunt Kara has already agreed to let me stay with her, which means I'll be staying somewhere my parents know is safe." Jon said.
"I thought you wanted to go pro in football?" Sarah asked.
"I do, but it doesn't hurt to have backup plans, plus this way I can put my brain to use beyond just acing all my homework." Jonathan said.
"Speaking of homework, any chance you can help me catch up on mine?" Sarah asked him.
"Yeah of course. I'll come by your place after my football practice today, since I don't think it's a good idea for either of us to be around Jordan right now. Also, my dad gave me some tips on how to help you control your abilities if you want to work on that too." Jon said and Sarah smiled.
"Sounds nice, but I have dinner plans with Aubrey. I've already started distancing myself since these powers popped up and I can't cancel. I feel bad keeping this from her." Sarah admitted and Jon nodded.
"If anyone understands that, it's me. But you know why we have to keep these secrets." Jon said and Sarah nodded.
"Because a lot more people could get hurt if we don't." Sarah said.
"Exactly. It's not fair, but it's the way things work. And who knows, maybe you and Aubrey will end up like my parents and you'll get to tell her. But Sarah, don't make the same mistake Jordan did." Jonathan said.
"What mistake?" Sarah asked.
"Getting so caught up with your powers that you lose sight of your human side. That's what happened to Jordan and you can see what's happening to him now because of it." Jonathan said.
"Yeah, I never want to be like him. But we really need to get going before we're late." Sarah said.
"Yeah, we can talk more after school." Jon agreed as they entered the classroom right before the bell rang.
