Chapter 19
While Lois and Lucy were talking and the boys were going to meet up with their friends, Clark was just walking around the fair, saying hello to people as he passed but then he smiled when he saw his oldest and closest childhood friend, Lana Lang, walk up to him, holding a caramel apple.
"Well, well, if it isn't the new mayor of Smallville?" Clark said with a smile as he and Lana hugged.
"Technically, I haven't won yet, despite the anonymous donations from both Gotham City and National City. You wouldn't happen to know anything about that would you?" Lana asked Clark with a chuckle.
"I may have put in a good word for you with Bruce Wayne and Lena Luthor." Clark said and Lana smiled.
"I appreciate that, Clark, but you didn't have to do that." Lana said.
"Since you won't let me endorse you as Superman, let me have this." Clark said, since Lana knew his secret and had known since they were kids, especially since she had a secret of her own.
"Fine." Lana said, though she really wasn't complaining.
"So, where are the girls?" Clark asked.
"Sophie is with Kyle today and Sarah is hanging out with her friends and her new girlfriend Aubrey." Lana said, since Sarah had come out to her parents as bisexual last summer and she was now dating a girl she'd met at summer camp.
"Yeah, Jordan's still not happy about her and Aubrey." Clark said.
"He won't cause any problems will he?" Lana asked, since Jordan had become a handful lately.
"Why do you think Jonathan's staying with him? To make sure he doesn't cause a scene." Clark said.
"That's good. But anyways, I think that Sarah is also trying to avoid me." Lana said.
"She still blames you for the divorce?" Clark asked, since Lana had confided that detail in him.
"Yeah. It doesn't help that I found out about Kyle's affair not long after she came out to us." Lana said.
"Yeah, that's not exactly convenient. But at least she hasn't discovered the secret you've been keeping from her, Sophie, Kyle and pretty much everyone aside from Lois and I." Clark said.
"And you will take that secret to your grave, like you promised." Lana told him.
"Relax, I will, but I do think that you should tell Sarah soon, especially since she's the same age the boys were when Lois and I told them my secret. Especially since we both know that Sarah and Sophie both have the same potential to be like Jonathan and Jordan." Clark said and Lana sighed.
"Look Clark, I gave that part of my life up for a reason." Lana said.
"So, you don't ever miss your powers?" Clark asked, since like him, Lana was also kryptonian, since she'd also been sent to Earth as a baby and somehow both of their pods had been fortunate enough to land in Smallville, Clark's pod had arrived at the Kent home while Lana's had landed at the Langs. They'd even been a crime fighting team in Smallville back when they were in high school, while they'd also dated, but it was after graduation where they'd gone their separate ways, since in addition to breaking up, though remaining on good terms, since they were still close friends, Clark and Lana had also chosen to go in opposite directions in terms of their futures. While Clark had gone to the fortress to learn more about his powers and eventually become Superman, Lana had rejected her powers, giving them up and essentially becoming human and had settled down in Smallville.
"Sometimes, especially when I get sick, but honestly, I do not miss bullets being shot at me on a regular basis, not to mention, I don't think I could stomach the kind of things you do." Lana said and Clark chuckled.
"You'd handle it fine. But I do think that you should at least tell Sarah the truth, since she's around the age where powers will start showing up." Clark said.
"Jonathan hasn't shown any powers yet." Lana reminded him.
"Actually, I took him to the Fortress a few days ago and it turns out that his intelligence is a kryptonian power, since instead of boosting his brawn, the sun is boosting his brain." Clark said.
"Got it. But Clark, I really don't want either of my daughters to inherit powers and considering that I was basically human when both of them were conceived, they shouldn't have any." Lana said.
"I understand Lana, believe me I do, but you may not have powers anymore, but you're still kryptonian, which means that there's a chance that you passed on your heritage to your kids. Probably an even larger chance than it was for me passing on powers to my kids since the girls were actually inside you." Clark reminded her.
"Clark, can you please just drop it." Lana said.
"Fine. But Lana, you know you can't keep this secret from them forever." Clark said.
"I can try. Clark, you're a parent, you should know that keeping our kids safe is the top priority and having powers is not safe. Besides, I don't want to get their hopes up, since think about what would happen if I told them that they could get powers but they never do. Imagine the lengths Sarah and Sophie might go to in order to develop them." Lana said.
"Fair point. But if either of them ever do develop powers." Clark said.
"Then I'll deal with it then." Lana promised.
"Okay then." Clark said.
"And I appreciate you not telling your boys about me." Lana said.
"It's your secret, I'm not going to reveal it without your permission." Clark said.
"I have to ask, if Jordan hadn't developed powers, would you have told him and Jonathan?" Lana asked him.
"As much as I'd like to say no, Lois was pushing me to tell her too and I know she would've worn me down eventually." Clark told her truthfully.
"And do you regret it?" Lana asked.
"I admit it did make things a bit rougher at first, especially since Jordan was developing his powers and Jonathan was upset about not getting any, but now things worked out." Clark said and he could tell that Lana was thinking about what he'd said.
"I still don't want to tell Sarah or Sophie about this unless something happens to force me too." Lana said.
"I understand, but maybe you should at least consider reclaiming your powers in case you need to use them to protect your family." Clark said, since the arrival of John Henry Irons made him believe that something was coming.
"Maybe." Lana said, though she didn't want to admit it.
