Chapter 11
"Well?" Sam asked when Superman returned to the DOD.
"My cousin was waiting for me at the crash site and she told me that the DEO is also aware of the ship and we also confirmed that this person comes from another universe." Superman said.
"Well, we pulled his prints and it turns out that our universe had one of him too, since we got a hit back. His name is John Henry Irons." Sam said.
"I know. What did you find out about him in this world?" Superman asked, wanting to try to get a better idea of who they were dealing with.
"It looks like he was a military man in this world, specializing in counter insurgency. But he died overseas." Sam said.
"What else do you know about him?" Superman asked.
"After he died, we started hearing reports that he might've been selling weapons to some suspicious characters." Sam said.
"Who?" Superman asked.
"Several people, including some old friends of yours. Lex Luthor and Bruno Manheim." Sam said and Superman sighed.
"Great. But that does give me an idea." Superman said.
"I'm listening." Sam said.
"If he was suspected of conspiracy and selling state secrets to terrorists, couldn't he have been arrested?" Superman asked.
"Yes, why?" Sam asked.
"I say if this guy wants to judge me for the actions of my counterpart on his earth, then we should have no problems doing the same to him. Besides, he did try to kill me. But my hope is that when he finds out that we're charging him for actions his counterpart committed on this earth, it might show him what it's like to just assume that I'm the same as I was on his earth." Superman said.
"Normally I'd say no, but like you said, he did try to kill you, so we do have cause to prosecute." Sam said.
"So, you're on board?" Superman asked.
"Yep. And honestly, I hope that your plan works, since honestly, I'd kind of like to have a man of his skills on our side." Sam said and Superman nodded.
"I also brought a drive with all the relevant data from his ship that you can go over. Hopefully it might shed some more light on his background." Superman said as he handed the drive to Sam.
"We'll take a look later." Sam said and Superman nodded as they headed towards the interrogation room.
"Here to ask me more questions?" Irons asked when he saw Sam Lane and Superman enter his room.
"No, here to inform you that we've decided to tack your counterpart from this world's charges onto your own for attempted murder." Sam said as he showed Irons the list.
"Treason, conspiracy, supplying terrorists? I never did any of this stuff." Irons said.
"And I never did anything to my world that your version of me apparently did to yours, but you seem to have no problem seeing me as him." Superman said.
"I'm trying to save this world from the same fate of mine." Irons said.
"We could say the same thing. Who's to say that you won't decide to go down the same path our Earth's John Henry Irons did and start supplying weapons to terrorists? And honestly, I think you might be even more dangerous, since you're the one flying around in a high tech warsuit." Sam said.
"The Superman of my world killed my wife. Twice." Irons blurted out.
"What?" Superman asked, since now they were getting somewhere.
"I watched you killed my first wife, Sam's daughter actually, on live tv, because she attempted to tell the world how to beat you. Then I watched you kill my second wife, your own cousin, right in front of me, because you discovered that she was a spy in your army's ranks for the resistance. I watched you blast two holes through Kara Zor-El's chest right in front of me. You took my daughter's mother away from her twice." Irons snapped, shocking Superman.
"Did you just say that you were married to my daughter on your Earth?" Sam asked.
"Lois Lane. She was the mother of my daughter Natalie." Irons said.
"I would never hurt her or Kara." Superman said.
"Sure, maybe not now, but the Superman of my world was a hero for years before he snapped. He chose his own people over Earth and you'll make the same call." Irons said.
"No I won't and even if I did, this world already has safeguards in place to make sure that if I did go bad, they'd be able to put me down before I hurt anyone. That was my call. I'm not blind to the destruction I could do if I did go bad and I'm not willing to condemn this world to it." Superman said, since now he could understand this guy's point of view.
Before Irons could even take in what he said however, Superman then got right in his face.
"That being said, if you ever imply that I would hurt my own cousin, the only blood related family I have left again, well, no one will look for someone who's already dead." Superman said, making it clear that he would never hurt Kara. At least not in his right mind, which clearly his counterpart had not been.
"I believe you. And honestly, now that I'm actually looking at you, I can see something that I couldn't before. Something that my Superman never had." Irons admitted.
"And that would be?" Superman asked.
"A reason to choose humanity. I don't know what it is, but I can tell that you genuinely see humanity as your real people." Irons said grudgingly.
"You're right about that. Even if there are other Kryptonians out there, Earth is my home. I will always fight to protect it." Superman said.
"And I'll admit, maybe when I first arrived, I was hasty, but when I saw you." John said.
"All you saw was the man who killed your wife. I get it. But I'm not that man. And I never will be." Superman said.
"And I might actually believe you. And those are the same words my Kara used to say to me." Irons said.
"What was?" Superman asked.
"That earth is her home. Whenever anyone questioned her loyalty, she told them that Earth was her home and humanity were her people. Especially since she had a human family." Irons said and Superman nodded.
"Well Superman, it looks like your plan worked. Once you exposed his hypocrisy, Irons was willing to talk and listen." Sam said and Superman nodded.
"You weren't actually going to charge me with those crimes were you?" John asked.
"Actually, if you didn't come around, we would have, but luckily we didn't have to. All charges will be dropped, since we know you were only doing what you thought was right." Sam said.
"You mentioned that there was a Kara on this world?" John asked.
"I don't think you'd really be her type." Superman said, since he was aware of the true subject of his cousin's desires.
"Maybe, but I'd at least like to see her before I try and set down roots on this world." John said.
"You don't want us to try and find a way to get you home?" Superman asked.
"The reason I was in that ship is because some kind of energy literally wiped my world out of existence." John said and now the final pieces fell into place for Superman. This man was a survivor from Crisis.
