Chapter 36
Kara was currently in her office at Catco, working on her newest story for the newspaper and it was one that Cat Grant had personally signed off on, since she liked the way Kara was taking her new assignment. But she was pulled from her work when she heard a knock on her door.
"Note to self, see if Cat will splurge to get me an assistant." Kara said to herself as she looked up, only to see her cousin waiting for her.
"Clark, what a nice surprise." Kara said as she got up to hug him.
"Yeah, it's good to see you too and I'm loving your new office. It's definitely nicer than the cubicles Lois and I had at the Daily Planet." Clark said with a smile.
"Well, being the head of Catco's new alien coverage section has its advantages." Kara said.
"I wish that more media outlets covered topics like this, since it could really help bring down Cadmus's influence." Clark said.
"Well, I'm sure that the Central City Citizen at the very least will be doing something similar with metahumans soon enough." Kara said.
"True. But what are you working on now?" Clark asked her.
"Why would I tell my competition that?" Kara asked, since while they were family, they were also competitors.
"Yes, because the Smallville Gazette has the resources to really compete with Catco." Clark said sarcastically, since Catco was a monster compared to the Gazette.
"Since I know you'll just read my story eventually when it comes out, it's a bit of a personal piece and you will not be leaving this city without signing an NDA to ensure that you don't scoop me." Kara said.
"I figured as much, not that I'd actually leave you to deal with Cat's wrath. The only member of my family I'd like to subject to right now is Jordan." Clark said.
"Not a bad idea actually. If anyone can scare Jordan straight it's the only woman on this planet that both of us are scared of." Kara said.
"What do you mean only woman?" Clark asked.
"You're the only person in this room who's scared of Lois, since you're the one who married her. For me, that role is filled by Lena." Kara said and Clark chuckled.
"Before we dive into that, would you mind answering my question." Clark asked.
"Right, sorry. Anyways, the story I'm working on now is about landlords forcing alien tenants out of their buildings by either making the places uninhabitable or hiking their rent so high that the tenants can't afford to pay, since as you can guess, most of these aliens live in low income housing and some of them just point blank throw them out for no good reason and no lawyer will listen because their aliens. It's deplorable." Kara said as Clark actually looked through her files.
"You know if you hadn't gone into journalism, you'd make one hell of a lawyer." Clark said and Kara chuckled.
"Thank you, but I think we both know that my other job's schedule doesn't leave much room to be in a courtroom. Though there was a time I considered going into law." Kara admitted.
"Really?" Clark asked.
"Yeah, to honor my mother." Kara said and Clark nodded.
"She was one of Krypton's most outstanding judges." Clark said.
"Let's not go that far. And stop using past tense, we both know she's still alive on Argo, we just haven't found it yet." Kara said and Clark nodded, not wanting to touch that particular topic with her, since he knew she didn't want to hear it.
"Anyways, the real reason I'm here is something I need to discuss with both you and Lena and it can't wait." Clark said.
"Why do I get the feeling that this is not going to be an easy conversation?" Kara asked.
"Because it involves dealing with the fallout of one of Lex's experiments. I'll explain more when we're in a more private setting, but for now, I'll all say is that it's a good thing you and Lena are still going strong." Clark said, making Kara even more curious about what was going on as she shut down her computer and locked up her files before following Clark out, since one of the perks of being the boss was that she could basically decide her own hours and Cat never saw any issues with that.
Kara had picked up Lena from L-Corp, since after hearing that Clark had to tell them about one of Lex's experiments, Lena agreed that it took precedence and they met Clark back at Kara's loft.
"So, what's going on?" Lena asked, only to be surprised when Clark handed her and Kara beers.
"I know this won't affect you Kara, but trust me, you'll understand why the gesture is needed in a minute." Clark said.
"Okay, what did Lex do?" Lena asked and after Clark finished bringing them up to speed, she definitely understood why Clark said she'd need the beer.
"So, Lex actually created a clone using both his DNA and your DNA?" Lena asked, trying to wrap her head around that.
"Yep. Unlike you, he was never smart enough to figure out how to give himself kryptonian powers, so he did the next best thing and tried to create an heir, a weapon that had his ruthlessness with my powers. Best we can tell the project didn't go the way he planned it and it couldn't be controlled and he recently escaped Cadmus captivity. Lois's father has him at the DOD for safety for right now, but we do need to think about a more long term solution." Clark said and now Kara was beginning to understand why Clark had come here.
"You want us to take the kid in?" Kara asked as Lena looked at Clark.
"I know it's a big ask and I do have a plan b, but I thought that I'd at least act, since this kid is technically Lena's nephew and considering you're more like a sister to me than a cousin Kara, he could be considered your nephew. And you know that if I could take him in myself I would, but." Clark said.
"But between the baby you and Lois have on the way, Lucy staying in your basement, Jordan just being Jordan and the fact that no one in Smallville would believe that you have an illegitimate son that age, it wouldn't work." Kara said and Clark sighed and nodded.
"I know it's a big ask, but since you two are already together, I thought it would be the next best thing, a way for him to still be raised by an El and a Luthor." Clark said.
"Except there's another complication." Lena said.
"What kind of complication?" Clark asked.
"Ursa Dru-Zodd is on Earth and she's taken on the role of Red Daughter, though I suspect it's only a matter of time until she cuts ties with Kasnia if she hasn't already." Kara said.
"How do you know that?" Clark asked.
"Because she already made contact with me, since she and I were friends growing up until she sided with her father in the war he started. For some reason she thought she could make me see her side now." Kara said.
"Okay, and I'm guessing she's probably got an ax to grind with me for locking up her father." Clark said.
"Ursa thinks the same thing the rest of the world does, that General Zod is dead and we need to keep it that way but I'll handle her." Kara said and Clark nodded.
"Anyways, I get that you two need to talk about this, so." Clark said.
"We'll do it." Lena blurted out before he could finish and Kara looked at her girlfriend in surprise, since while she wasn't opposed to the idea, she thought that they'd at least have a discussion about it first.
"Really?" Clark asked.
"I know we should talk about this first, but honestly, right now, this kid is the future of the Luthor family, especially since it won't be as easy for Kara and I to have kids as it is for you and Lois and I want to be able to guide my nephew to help leave behind a better legacy than his father. Father being Lex of course." Lena said.
"Clark, can you please give us a minute to discuss this, since while I'm not saying no, I just want to make sure that we're both thinking this decision through completely before we truly commit to anything." Kara said and Clark nodded as he left them alone.
"Okay, so you know I'm on board with this, but still, we've only been together a few months and taking in a child, even one who's physically a teenager, is a big step." Kara said.
"I know and I know that I shouldn't have just blurted that out, but I think we both know that we never really thought that motherhood was in the cards for us, but I do think that we're ready for it and come on, we're both guilty of jumping into things head on, we're not the kind of people to take things slow. Besides, the fact that this kid exists opens up new possibilities for our future too." Lena said and Kara smiled.
"A child that's really 50% you, 50% me." Kara said.
"We can consider this a trial run where we get to skip ahead to the hardest part, raising a teenager. We'll say he's Lex's son and given his reputation even before he went crazy, no one will doubt it." Lena said.
"I never thought I'd see the day that Lena Luthor would jump at the chance to be a parent." Kara said.
"Neither did I. But this boy deserves a chance to be more than whatever it is Lex intended for him to be and more importantly, he deserves a family, something you and I both know more about than anyone." Lena said.
"Then I guess the only question left to ask is am I moving into your place or are you moving in here?" Kara asked with a smile, making it clear that she was on board.
"No offense, but I'd kind of prefer if you moved into my place, since it's got better security and a custom built dog house for Krypto." Lena said and Krypto barked, as if giving his approval for the idea.
"I was hoping you'd say that, since your place is a lot nicer than mine." Kara said and Lena smiled.
"Then I guess you better start packing while I make sure that we have a room ready for our new nephew to live in." Lena said and Kara grinned.
"Let's tell Clark that we need to have the DOD or maybe then DEO set up a background for this kid and more importantly, give him a name." Kara said and Lena nodded, both of them both excited and terrified about this new step they were about to take in their relationship.
