Chapter 32

"Dad, can we talk?" Chloe asked her father while the others were training.

"What's going on?" Henry asked her.

"When are you going to take off my training wheels? You don't treat Barry with kid gloves like you do me." Chloe asked, since her father was way too overprotective of her.

"Chloe, I know this seems extreme, but I'm trying to keep you safe." Henry said.

"I'm a superhero, just like you and Barry. The life I've chosen isn't safe, but that never stopped you. And Rick, Courtney and Jen aren't stopped from being heroes by their parents." Chloe said.

"That's because none of them lost someone to their greatest enemy." Henry said.

"This is about Eliza." Chloe said, realizing that this was about her father's old sidekick, the original Silver Bolt, who she was named after.

"Eliza's dead because I didn't try hard enough to protect her. I gave her too much free reign. Maybe if I'd had her on a shorter leash, she'd still be alive." Henry said.

"Or maybe she would've died a lot sooner. I understand that you and mom just want to protect me, but you have to take off the training wheels at some point. I mean, you never treated Barry like this and he's going up against guys who are way more dangerous than the ISA ever was." Chloe said.

"That's because Barry is an adult and you're my little girl. I already lost Eliza and my first wife Nora. I can't lose you too. Barry has had his powers for years, knows how to use them in ways I couldn't even begin to imagine. You've only had your powers for about a year and a half. You still have a lot to learn." Henry said.

"Then why won't you teach me like you taught him? You didn't just teach Barry how to run, you taught him how to fight." Chloe said.

"You're not ready for that." Henry insisted.

"I'm not ready for it, or you're not ready for it? You still see me as this little girl and because of that, you won't let me be me." Chloe said angrily.

"Is this about being a superhero or something else entirely." Henry asked, thinking about another conversation they'd had with Tina about a year ago.

"This has nothing to do with that." Chloe said, knowing what her father was talking about.

"Yes it does. This isn't just about your training, this is about you being bisexual." Henry said, since Chloe had come out to her parents and Chloe knew that the jig was up, since her father was right.

"Ever since I came out, you've been treating me like I'm made out of glass. Is this about you not wanting me to use my speed, or you not being able to accept that I like girls as much as I like boys." Chloe asked him.

"Chloe." Henry said.

"No dad, you've made it completely clear that you don't respect me the same way you respect Barry. You don't trust me the way you do him." Chloe said.

"Chloe, that's not true." Henry said.

"Yes it is." Chloe said.

"Chloe, Eliza was the same way and that's why I know that it's not a choice and I also know how hard the world can be for people like you. I saw it with Eliza and I don't want to see you go through it too." Henry said.

"Times have changed since then and in case you haven't noticed, I'm not made out of glass. I can take care of myself." Chloe said.

"Which is what I'm afraid of. Chloe, I love you and I don't want you to change, but you're too hot headed and when you get pushed too far, you lash out. And what was before your speed surfaced." Henry said.

"Well it did and that's how I can do this." Chloe said as she tossed a lasso of silver lightning at her father.

"How did you?" Henry asked, since throwing lightning was a more advanced move that he hadn't taught her yet.

"Barry's been a much better teacher than you are, since he doesn't try to hold me back, he's teaching me the tricks you wouldn't. He taught me some pretty cool tricks to do with my lightning. And apparently I'm a better student than you make me out to be. So tell me dad, why are you holding me back?" Chloe asked.

"Because I don't want to lose you." Henry finally said, the floodgates finally opening.

"Dad, don't you get it. You're trying to stop me from being who I am. You keep doing that and you will lose me. I get that you want to keep me safe, but you're going about it in the wrong way. Instead of trying to shelter me and pushing me away as a result, why don't you do what Barry's doing and actually teach me how to take care of myself in the field. Because believe it or not, I didn't enjoy having to run back to Central City behind your back to have my big brother teach me all the stuff that you wouldn't behind your back. Hell, you haven't even taught me how to phase yet. Not to mention time travel." Chloe said.

"Watch it. Time travel is off limits. At least for now, because I'm sure that your brother will agree with me that it's very dangerous, not only to you, but to everyone else around you. But I admit, maybe I have been overprotective." Henry admitted.

"Maybe, more like definitely. You never treated Barry like this and from what I've heard, he's the one with the actual target on his back from the same psycho who killed his mom and you don't keep the training wheels on him." Chloe said.

"Barry's an adult. You're not. But you're right. But that's because these threats didn't exist when Barry got his speed. I had more time to train him. But you're right, I need to stop holding you back. But now can you please let me go." Henry said as Chloe released her lightning lasso.

"Creative use for your lightning." Henry said.

"It's all about imagination." Chloe said with a smirk.

"I'll keep that in mind. But now, I suggest that you get some rest, because tomorrow your real training begins. And you're going to be wishing that I was still holding back, because if you want me to make you ready for the fight that's coming, it's gonna be harder than you ever thought possible." Henry said and Chloe grinned, since that meant that her dad was serious about upping her training.

"Bring it on. I'm ready and it sounds like you finally are too." Chloe said and Henry nodded.
