Chapter 8
Kira Runk was currently in the lab she and Jesse had set up in the garage, currently on facetime with her little brother Chester, who lived with their grandmother in Central City.
"Mind telling me again why you didn't come back to Central City with your friend Wally?" Chester asked her as they face timed.
"Because I everytime I go back to Central City or even talk to Nana Runk on the phone, she always tries to get me to move back to Central City. She can't accept that I'm happy here in Keystone." Kira said.
"It's too bad, you know that you'd likely have a job lined up for you at Mercury Labs right?" Chester asked, since Kira had 2 different and impressive phds in engineering and had graduated top of her class at Hudson University.
"I know, I've already turned down a job at McCulloch Technologies right now, though that's because I hate the current CEO. Besides, I don't think Mercury Labs could handle having two Runks work there, since didn't you tell me that you got an internship there?" Kira asked.
"Yeah, it starts next week and I am so excited." Chester said eagerly.
"I bet. That place sounds like Candyland, but you know me. I like to do things my own way and being my own boss means that I can work on whatever projects I want whenever I want." Kira said.
"Fair enough. But still, I do kind of wish that you could put your genius to more use than just small projects in that garage." Chester said.
"You know what dad's saying was. One person's trash is another person's treasure. Which is why Christina McGee is going to be begging you to work for her before you even finish high school, since you're much more creative than most scientists." Kira said and Chester smiled at her.
"Thanks. Oh, by the way, did you get the data I sent you?" Chester asked.
"Yeah, those calculations are definitely helping. I think that in a few years, we might have a prototype of dad's device built, so you'll have something to pitch to Mercury labs when you eventually get hired there." Kira said.
"That's assuming that the device works." Chester said.
"Chester, we've been working on this device for years, it'll work. The only question is how effective it will be." Kira said.
"Well, considering the fact that we're building a device meant to convert pollution into clean air, I think it will be very effective." Chester said.
"Yeah, it's just lucky that I have a wealthy scientist like Jesse to help finance it. Though I am thinking about asking her to help with it." Kira said.
"No, Kira, we agreed that we were going to do this without any help besides financial. This is one of Dad's best ideas that he never got around to making." Chester said.
"Maybe, but still, we're no closer to finding a solution to the power problem we've been having, since it doesn't matter how well the device works if it only works for a few minutes, since we haven't been able to find a power source capable of running it for a long period of time. And honestly, I feel bad just using Jesse for her money, since I can tell that the scientist in her wants to help with this and I don't see what the problem is, since science is about collaboration." Kira said.
"Kira." Chester said.
"Chester, I know how much you want to keep this our project and I do too, but more importantly, I want to see Dad's dream actually be realized more and that can only happen if we bring in some additional help with this problem." Kira said, since she knew how much the world could benefit from this device and while she and Chester had been working on it for years, even before she left Central City, she knew that no matter how much they innovated, they were no closer to finding a sustainable power source for the device.
"Fine." Chester said.
"Hey, part of being a scientist is working with others and knowing when to ask for help. It's a matter of putting ego and pride aside for the betterment of mankind." Kira said.
"I guess. And if it works, it works." Chester agreed as Kira heard Jesse walking into the garage and it sounded like she'd brought someone with her.
"I gotta go. We'll talk again soon. Love you bro, oh and before I forget, man up and ask that Allegra girl out. I'm tired of hearing you go on and on about her." Kira said as she hung up right as Jesse entered the lab with Dinah in tow.
"Uh Jesse, why did you bring a complete stranger here?" Kira asked.
"Kira Runk, meet Dinah Drake, the private investigator I hired to look into my dad and she knows about Wally and she wants to help us. Especially since she's a metahuman herself." Jesse said.
"Does Wally know about this?" Kira asked, since while she had no problems with another person coming on board, she knew that Wally was the boss when it came to this stuff and he had to approve it.
"Yeah, he said he was good with it, but he'll be in Central City a little longer than expected. He didn't go into detail. But in the meantime, I'm going to get Dinah all set up in our system. Why don't you head home for the night? Get some rest." Jesse said.
"In a bit, but before I go, I want to talk to you about my dad's device." Kira said.
"What about it?" Jesse asked, the annoyance in her voice about funding a project that she couldn't help on clear as day.
"I finally convinced my brother to let me bring you in on it, since honestly, we could use your big brain to help." Kira said and Jesse grinned.
"Great, because I've got so many ideas." Jesse said.
"Are any of them ideas for a power source?" Kira asked.
"Several. But we can talk about it after you get some rest. Go." Jesse said and Kira nodded as she shook Dinah's hand before heading out.
